Why is Outer Range so dark

Why is Outer Range so dark

I really want to watch this show. Love these kind of stories - and Josh Brolin.

But to watch the show I have to be able to actually see what’s going on. And I often can’t. Not on my IPad Pro and not on my OLED tv.

So: does it get better with the lighting during the season or should I just stop now?

EDIT: should have put in the title that I’ve only watched ep 01 and thought the whole season was out

Why is Outer Range so dark

I also had difficulty watching on TV. Today I booted up the laptop, cranked the brightness and adjusted the angle of the screen. Definitely helped and I realized there was so much I missed last night. I also turned off the closed caption; it detracts too much from watching what's happening on the screen.

The show pulled me in but left me with lots of questions. I'll be back next Friday to see where we go from here.

Came here for this. Thought I was going crazy. Blackout curtains, no light but the screen. Amazon needs to fix this

level 1

Could hardly see the scenes that took place in low light! Really liked episode 1 so far, but man if it's going to be this dark all the time, that's going to be brutal on my eyes. Watching on a Samsung 4k OLED with the fire stick, anyway to fix the brightness without doing much adjusting? I turned the subtitles off, I noticed this automatically plays in HDR but it doesn't seem like an improvement. I'll check next time to see if the dynamic mode was on, I just remembered towards the end when Autumn meets Royal at the hole, her flashlight burned my retinas out, maybe the lighting is just bad?

level 2

I think - unfortunately - that the lighting is just bad

level 1

I am watching on a Laptop so have the luxury of fine tuning the brightness and contrast. I've noticed this trend is getting worse and this series is definately the worst ive seen. I tried to watch it without adjustments but could barely make out what was going on. I don't understand why they do this, it's very frustrating.

level 2

Its frustrating. AND dumb

level 1

Yeah - I'm on an LG and changed my HDR preset to the Technicolor Expert setting and it snapped into place where it should have be. Definitely something wacky in the scaling of the image though and I highly doubt it is creative intent.

level 1

This show too dim!! Can’t fix. Very irritating. Brand new TV

level 1

I am glad to see this post. i have tried watching on my 4k MSI monitor, my 4k projector, and my OLED Samsung tablet. All are unwatchable, even at max brightness on them. So frustrating.

level 2

For some reason some people defend the lighting?!

level 1

I have a Sony 4K oled, the picture is so dim I just can’t do it. I like the story premise but I can’t deal with this. I guess I’ll go straight to the cliff notes.

level 2

Glad to know I’m not alone in this

level 1

Episode 7 is unwatchable so far.

level 1

It's got to be one of the darkest HDR presentations out there. Watched on an LG C1 in a completely dark room and was able to watch it kinda decently, during the day it was impossible to follow though. That said I still respect the show as I found it pretty good.

level 2

I ended up watching the full season and even though I’ll be tuning for season 2 I’m not in love with it

level 1

You’re so right I could barely watch it I had to turn my brightness up on my TV to full and shut off all the room lights and it still was not good they must be saving a lot of money filming at midnight with all their lights off I guess it hides the imperfection of the camera work

level 2

Pretty much what I was thinking.

It’s a sad trend that show runners think we prefer too not see what we’re watching

level 1

Your TV does not have a brightness adjustment?

level 2

Of course. It even has multiple picture profiles such as “dynamic”

They, and the brightness adjustment, doesn’t do enough.

And I have a hard time believing you’re not thinking the same

· 5 mo. agoThere are no Fritos in that hole, Karl

Well, as 2 episodes have only been released, we can’t say for sure whether it improves or not but, I’d still say to keep watching if you enjoy these kinds of stories and Josh Brolin. I agree that it sometimes may be hard to see what’s going on but I personally was still able to understand and enjoy the show.

level 1

Haha I thought it was just me! Turned the first episode off because it was so frustrating trying to see. Glad I tried again later because it's really good.

level 1

I had no issues seeing anything but I watched it in a dark room with no reflections on the tv

Is Outer Range filmed dark?

Also...about 25% of the show runtime is dark....

Is Outer Range worth watching?

Outer Range is enjoyable not just because it's mysterious, well-written, and beautifully shot with stunning sound design. It's enjoyable because it gives you permission to suffer the pain of insignificance. Everything's heavy and dark and serious, and it can be exhausting...

What is the black hole in Outer Range?

This hole seems to magically form whenever misfortune takes place. Royal is teleported from the nineteenth century to 1968. The hole hurls him forwards nearly a hundred years into the swinging sixties. He exits covered in a black substance and startles a young boy at the edge of the pit.

What the heck is Outer Range about?

Outer Range is the story of Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) a Wyoming rancher whose family is facing hard times. One day, Royal discovers a mysterious hole on his property. The hole is massively wide, bottomless, and covered with a thin mist that does strange things to anyone who touches it.
