In a well-known financial agreement, Netflix took on international distribution rights for the series back in 2016 as the streamer partnered in funding production on the show — but as ViacomCBS seeks to expand the reach of their Paramount+ streaming service around the world, the time for Star Trek: Discovery at Netflix has come to an end after three seasons.

Reported by Deadline today, ViacomCBS has paid off all Netflix-related financial commitments, and the series will be leaving Netflix in all international regions this week — ahead of Discovery’s Season 4 premiere in the United States and Canada — and will not be returning to international territories until 2022.

As Deadline reports:

Discovery will be leaving [Netflix] as of midnight tonight. In a just closed deal between ViacomCBS and Netflix, the Shari Redstone controlled company has paid off the lucrative financial arrangement that launched Discovery back in 2017. With the top tier IP fully back in the fold, the plan is for Discovery to take flight on Paramount+ around the globe starting next year.
The likes of the UK, Germany, Ireland, Austria and Switzerland will be among the first markets to stream Discovery on Paramount+ of the more than 20 countries the platform is available in outside of North America. ViacomCBS has said that as part of an accelerated expansion they anticipate being in around 45 markets within the next year or so – and, of course, a high-profile brand like Star Trek will lead that charge.

“As we rapidly expand our global streaming footprint, we are bringing more of our top titles home to ViacomCBS for Paramount+ markets around the world,” ViacomCBS Networks International streaming boss Kelly Day told Deadline today.
“We have a strong global and local content pipeline that positions us for success across our regions, and repatriating beloved series like Star Trek: Discovery for Paramount+ is another step forward as we bring fans more must-watch series worldwide.”

Reporting indicates that neither Discovery’s availability in Canada (on CTV SciFi and Crave), or Amazon’s international distribution of Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks will be impacted by today’s news.

Fans in Europe and the other impacted regions will now need to wait an unspecified number of months for Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Prodigy to be available — and to somehow avoid spoilers set to flood the internet — as the shows continue to air new episodes in the United States and Canada.

Due to the extremely last-minute announcement on this situation — coming just 2 days before the Season 4 premiere — it’s likely that negotiations between Netflix and ViacomCBS were still ongoing up until this week. Otherwise, it’s certain that such impactful news would have been shared publicly earlier.

Here’s hoping this Paramount+ expansion gets rolling quickly — because while in the end, having fewer places for Star Trek to call “home” will be easier on viewers around the world… in the meantime, it’s a real pain in the ass.

I’m a US viewer so this doesn’t directly affect me personally, and I’m not exactly in love with this particular part of the franchise in the first place, but I’m still annoyed at this. I can only imagine how upset I’d be as an overseas fan eagerly anticipating this week’s season (or “series”, I should say) premiere.
I’m sure eventually every Trek fan all over the globe will be able to watch everything together on Paramount+, but the rollout is definitely having some bumpy spots and growing pains.

All I can say as an international fan is that the shoddy way that Viacom has handled the overseas releases of Lower Decks, Prodigy and now season 4 of Discovery has been very disappointing.

    Yep. Heck, there must surely have been some of you who’ve been planning viewing parties and the like. To not only have those plans torn out from under you but told just days before the season series premiere that you’d have to wait months for it (in this interconnected era, when fans around the planet discuss each new episode or movie all at once) and need another service for it from the one you’ve relied on for years (and which you might well have signed up for and perhaps even recently renewed specifically for this show)? I must admit I’d be pretty angry with Viacom right now (hell, I am angry, on other fans’ behalf).
    I totally get that they always intended to eventually operate Paramount+ globally and make the franchise exclusive to it, but this was a really lousy way to go about it.

I can guarantee that fans have done this since TNG. Its nothing new. People are allowed to like a show, and still find fault with it.

It’s a show with a number of devotees, and this week’s episode was the season premiere. People were looking forward to it for months, with every reasonable expectation they’d get to watch it this week on Netflix, and Paramount suddenly pulled the rug out from under them.

Wow way to go Paramount, you are screwing your international fans. We all get it, it’s about money. No one is begrudging you of that. It’s sad people will now be forced to pay for most likely a lesser service most may not even want just to watch this show, but now you know how American fans felt back in 2017. And even that is not so bad, but how you did did this is total BS! Pulling the show three days before it airs on a site they ALREADY paid for? WTF? This was just bad.
It’s been clear for a long time Netflix doesn’t care about Discovery that much anymore and in the end this will probably be the better deal in the long term. But this is just effed up. Both Netflix and Paramount should be ashamed how they did this.

Big FU back to Paramount+. I’m not signing up to another streamer thank you very much, plus the late minute nature leaves a really bad taste. And then on top of that not make it available internationally for months after it drops in the US an even bigger FU to fans outside US(and Canada). It’s the 21sr century and international markets don’t like being treated as an afterthought. You could have done it from the next season once your operations ready, but no, you choose to screw us over. So you reap what you sow.

  All this said, I do wonder if the delay might be Netflix enforcing contractual clauses to keep the show out of their territories for a specific period. If so, maybe Paramount could mention that in a tactful way.
  Also, I dunno, put some more Trek on PP outside the States as compensation? PP Australia currently only has Prodigy and the first two JJ movies.

    It’s improved to me for but still sucks a lot. I did think season 3 was the best one so far but this show is still my least favorite out of all them.
    But how they did this a big middle finger to the international audience. For people abroad who are huge fans of this show and have supported it since day one really is a blow to them. I would be pissed too and I don’t even care that much about the show that much. But how they did this was very sloppy.
    I feel very bad for our international Trek brother and sisters right now.

    I agree, I can’t stand JJ or Kurtzman Trek but if a show I was enjoying and was anticipating a new series of suddenly got pulled from a streaming service I already pay for and I was held to ransom to pay for yet another, I would be really annoyed too.
    I think CBS will see a huge drop in their precious ratings and they deserve to. The hardcore fans won’t want to wait months and have the new episodes spoiled so they will go “elsewhere” to watch it. The casual viewer who maybe isnt a Trekkie but has watched Disco because it was included with Netflix, likely wont care enough to want to pay for yet another streaming service to watch new episodes.
    The rise of streaming has made every studio want a slice of the pie. Rather than sharing a dish at the dinner party they’d rather sit in the corner eating alone.
    Congratulations CBS on a really dumb decision.

    Actually, the phrase is ‘being allowed to have an opinion”, or maybe ‘being disappointed that the rug has been pulled from under them at the last second’.
    You’ve claimed I have spent ‘years’ complaining about Discovery, when I’ve spoke about it less that half a dozen times, and each time, my options were valid criticisms regarding storylines and it being ‘too’ different from other Treks to be considered part of the same ‘prime’ universe. My opinions, just like everyone else’s, are just as valid.
    I like Discovery, I’ve never said otherwise. I think the writing can be subpar at times, and repetitive – there’s a reason why everyone jokes about Michael crying/saving the galaxy/monologuing. And I also think that they went to far with aesthetic changes (like holo-communication), cultural changes (having Klingons eat other sentient beings) and tech, such as hundreds of armed drones that have never seen before or since.
    It doesn’t mean I hate anything. Why do you think you are the gatekeeper for the show? What makes you think only your opinion is valid?
    We are all part of the same Star Trek fanbase, and the odds of every single one of us, to like every single episode or character, from every single show and movie is zero. People have differing views. Leave them be.
    We have more in common than that which divides us.

And I’m not blaming Paramount for not wanting to have their own shows on the competition’s service, especially if it’s Netflix, the champion of Streaming right now.       When a show is about to leave Netflix, you get a message – either before you start watching, or as as the show begins, informing you that the show will be leaving on x date. The fact that seasons 1-3 left, with zero warning, shows that it wasn’t planned, and looks like the decision may have been forced on them by Paramount.
      Yes, it sucks for international fans, of which, I am one. I’m from the UK, and if I want to watch this legally, I will have to not just wait until Feb/March next year, but I will have to fork out a minimum of £22/$28 per month to get SKY TV, as Paramount+ is being bundled with an existing TV service, and not as a standalone service.
      If anyone needs to get a life, its people like you who attack people for daring to express a valid opinion.

        I’m not “attacking” you for expressing a valid opinion (that it sucks DISCO leaves Netflix and Paramount and Netflix couldn’t find an agreement); I am however criticizing the way you express that opinion, demonizing Paramount for their “disgusting” move, when it is actually perfectly reasonable. The fact that this was announced so shortly before Season 4’s release, does seem to indicate that Paramount was actually negotiating with Netflix until very recently and were perfectly willing to make this work. Nobody knows why these negotiations failed. Did Paramount get greedy? Did Netflix get greedy? Is there another reason? Who knows. Just accept it and move on. I remember times when I had to wait a year before I could get the newest Trek episodes in my country.

        It isn’t perfectly reasonable. They had the stars of the show in Germany and The UK over the last few weeks telling everyone about the new seasons, which was starting on November 18th. We, the fans were lied to, not just by Paramount, but due to the cast also being lied to, they inadvertently compounded that lie – it is in no way there fault, they told everyone what they knew in good faith.
        As I’ve said on other comments, if a show is due to leave (as in seasons 1-3), there is usually information to warn people that it will be leaving. If it was just season 4 that was delayed / not being shown on netflix, then that would make it a bit more understandable, but to remove the whole show without warning is a crappy move.
        I was the same as you – it used to be well over year before episodes were available, but that was before the internet and spoilers. In this day and age, it is impossible to avoid spoilers for anything.

        I think the main problem isn’t just that, it’s just why hasn’t the other shows been taken off yet (as far as I’m aware, here in the UK, Netflix still has The Original Series, The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise, but Discovery is the only Trek series that left the service). Also no announcement on the status of Picard and Lower Decks future on Prime Video over here…
        I think it’s fair to ask questions and I think it’s easy to understand why people feel like Paramount have left them high and dry with the possibility of other fans ruining the ongoing plot of Season 4 when we may not see it till next spring at the earliest…

        I see your point, and I’m not happy about it either and think it’s really odd. As I said before I just want to caution against/ criticize any knee-jerk reaction and pointing of fingers and demonizing any particular party since we don’t know what exactly happened and who got greedy or stubborn or made a bad call in those negotiations. These things happen. They are not pretty, but they’re not the end of the world either.

    But, if Paramount removes its programming from Netflix, I highly doubt they’ll be getting any more proceeds from me. I’ll move to torrenting Discovery if I can’t reasonably pay for it, and I don’t consider paying for a Paramount streaming service to be worth it.
    Those are the simple, real economics of it. Make it too difficult to buy, and people just won’t.

It’s been clear for a long time Netflix doesn’t care about Discovery that much anymore and in the end this will probably be the better deal in the long term. But this is just fucked up. Both Netflix and Paramount should be ashamed how they did this.

  I totally agree with you! It is too cruel to pull the carpet out from under them mere days before the release. Had they not (apparently) stoked the fire of Europeans in London so shortly before, it’d be a little less cruel.
  On a side note: When I logged into Netflix in Europe I had access to DISCO and downloaded Season 1 for the plane flight home. When I got back to the states, I discovered that the episodes were available so long as flight mode was not turned off. 🤔

  It’s not just having to pay for another service. Paramount+ will only start to roll out as a service some time next year so all international fans will have to wait for months or even years until they can see the show (remember: Netflix is available in almost 200 countries worldwide, Paramount+ is aiming for 45 “within the next year or so”).       There’s some speculation on other sites that Viacom may have tried to negotiate a non-exclusive license which would have allowed Discovery to remain on Netflix but also stream on Paramount+ outside the US. Obviously, that’s less attractive for Netflix. Pulling it so abruptly only days before the new season is almost the worst case of how this could have played out. The only even worse situation I can imagine is if they had pulled it in the middle of season 4.

  Absolutely. They will lose a lot of money because of this, because there certainly will be people who would pay for it, but if they can’t, well, there are other ways, aren’t there? And once you start finding other ways and see how well that works, will you go back to paying? (And no, I am not endorsing it. It’s just the way it is going to work.)
  Dumb move. Also, in my country they are combining Paramount+ with Sky, and I have no interest in Sky. It’s even more than Netflix, and much more than Disney+ which is what I am mostly watching anyway.

My guess is Para+ launches International in February/March 2022.
Personally I’m not in the last bothered as I’m no fan of Discovery, but it is a naughty move. Really not good to do this within a week of the premiere. If they announced this a month ago it would at least have landed with less a gut punch to those looking forward to watching the series.
Star Trek is very badly handled. Its all over the place with Picard on Amazon, one on Netflix the others somewhere else. Star Wars is all on one service! That’s what should be the case for Star Trek.

  I mean that’s what they are trying to do with Paramount+. The problem is that they are pulling Discovery from Netflix before their own service is available in most countries. Some countries like UK or Germany may get Paramount+ early next year but it’s going to take a long time before it reaches the global coverage that Netflix has.

Well, Paramount can stick this where the sun don’t shine. Nothing on Netflix saying it was the last day (I was half way through season 3 catching up ready for the start).
They’re going to loose a lot of money, as people won’t wait that long – especially when every episode will spoiled for international viewers like myself. I was considering getting this when it launched, but there’s no chance now.
Screw Paramount for doing this.

  Exactly. By the time it is available in my country, I will have watched it. Patience is a virtue… that I don’t have. It was bad enough having to wait half a day before it was available, having to wait half a year…
  Plus the service it will come to is pretty expensive, which makes it even worse.
  What they should have done is make sure it is available from day 1 in each market. So once they launch Paramount+ (also as a stand alone service, not bundled with a bunch of crap I don’t care about), fine, pull it off Netflix. From then on, have it on their own service. But pulling it beforehand? Bad.
  I do imagine that Netflix is to be blamed as well, as they may not want to invest money in a franchise they know they are going to lose. For them it makes sense to pull the plug right now, as the fans will mostly be upset at CBS and not at Netflix. And if people stop watching DSC because of that, and watch Netflix shows instead, even better.
  I believe that if you’re not in it when the hypetrain gets going, when all the YouTube videos are released (which is when the US launch is happening), you’re less likely to catch up when it is finally available.

Well, I’ve just cancelled Netflix. Disco was virtually the only thing I watched on it. To say I’m disappointed is a major understatement. Suffering from Aspergers and depression, new episodes of Trek were my “ray of sunshine” each week.
And yes, I loved Disco… really down about this.

  But, it has to be a blow. Its easy to say its due to P+ but if I recall, the only reason there was even interest in Trek returning to TV was because Netflix wanting to develop TV based on the popularity of the brand on its service.
  If Discovery was a home run on Netflix, you can imagine they’d have had contractual rights longer. And they obviously didnt want Picard either.
  Personally, Disco is a big disappointment. It only works for CBS in that its content so viewership doesnt matter to a degree. Its about content for the service.

    Bro, it’s crazy you are so disappointed with Discovery now because I was on Trekmovie like a week or so ago reading some of the early reviews of first season and you were one of its biggest cheerleaders. I thought the show was OK then, but mostly sucked.
    Now the tables have (sort of) turned. You seem really down on the show while this is the most I been enjoying it in its 3 seasons. Still a disappointment for me, but a lesser one at least. 😉
    But I also have to agree with you, if Discovery was a bigger hit on Netflix, they would’ve fought harder to keep it; at least for another season since they already advertised it. My guess is it got an audience for sure, but probably not worth what Netflix was paying for it so had no issues to let it go sadly.

      When season 3 was released I often saw Discovery in the top places of the Netflix top 10. Based on that, I’m assuming it was doing reasonably well for them (unless all the other shows released during that time did even worse).
      By all accounts, CBS doesn’t want to give exclusive licenses to any third party streaming service anymore. Of course, the show becomes less attractive to Netflix if they don’t have exclusive distribution rights.
      There is a good chance CBS will also try to pull Picard from Amazon Prime or simply end it after season 3.

        I guess Netflix is in the relatively comfortable situation that they have a lot of content. So losing Discovery probably hurts Netflix far less than not being able to show Discovery would hurt Paramount Plus in their expansion plans.
        By all accounts, Netflix paid a lot of money to CBS to be the exclusive distributor of Discovery outside North America during seasons 1-3. Recently, ViacomCBS corporate people have said repeatedly that ViacomCBS doesn’t want to hand out exclusive licences to any of its IPs anymore. I’m not sure if ViacomCBS tried to negotiate a non-exclusive licensing deal and Netflix simply didn’t bite. Unless their negotiations lasted until very recently it just doesn’t make a lot of sense for ViacomCBS to drop this information so close to the release.

        Damn bummer. And it sucks people abroad can’t watch either of the current shows right now. Prodigy was one thing but understandable. And I don’t think its as big of a deal since its more of a kids show, although I know people definitely want to check it out of course. But losing Discovery like that is a total blow even if you still don’t like the show much. People still want to keep up with it because that’s what most fans do.

  I actually, for the first time, praised Paramount+ here like a few weeks ago. I been spending years highlighting the spectacularly crappy service that site was when it was All Access. Just a total waste of time unless you really liked CBS mostly generic shows, endless revivals and spin offs. But I had to admit, P+ has improved things a lot. But now after what these shitbags are doing to fans worldwide it’s hard to speak positive about it anymore. NuTrek has been sucking less for me in the last year and I’m more invested in it than I have been since JJ verse came on the scene. But it’s not right what they are doing to international fans and I really hope they pirate the shit out of Discovery!

    Ugh no, LD of the part I saw was just hyperactive, easter egg nonsense. The characters again sounded too contemporary (a big part of anything Kurtzman “NuTrek” and it seemed more like a mocking farce rather than genuine Star Trek.
    I’m now having a go at the people who enjoy the show, but I honestly don’t see how anyone making Lower Decks considers it canon. The animated format aside could any of the Lower Decks or any of the Kurtzman Trek characters and I include legacy characters like NuPicard and NuSeven walk into an episode of TOS, TNG, DS9 or VOY or with some time travel ENT, and believably interact?
    That’s where a lot of the problems come with NuTrek. Kurtzman and Co didn’t want to do the research of watching the other shows to get an idea of what they were taking on when they got the rights to make what they think is Star Trek.
    They just make what they want and any dissenting opinion just gets shut down as “toxic fandom” that way you can dismiss anyone very easily. It’s essentially like the echo chambers of social media.
    Heck, Chabon even actively wanted to divide the fans and that to me is so anti Star Trek, essentially agree with what I make otherwise you’re toxic. Poor writing on the Picard series aside I just can’t get onboard with that and it has tainted the franchise for me to some degree.
    The Trek I loved ended with Enterprise’s cancellation. If people enjoy what Kurtzman is making /overseeing good luck to them and enjoy the show, it just isn’t for me.

      LOL I will definitely agree that the characters sound too contemporary on LDS at times. But that does seem to be an issue with all the Kurtzman shows. Even Prodigy, the characters speak a lot of modern slang for a bunch of 24th century aliens who grew up in the Delta Quadrant. It’s definitely canon, but I see your point too how you have a hard time with the change in tone and character attitudes. I really love this show but you’re not really wrong either lol. But I do hope you’ll try and watch an entire episode someday. If not, no worries, it sounds like its just not for you.
      We’re on the same page with Picard, but I still want to see where it goes second season with Q. It looks fun at least but I’m worried it might be too much grimdark.
      But people say I hate Kurtzman Trek a lot too but next to you I can almost be considered an apologist for it. So I’m not that bad. But I still easily love old Star Trek way way more. 😉

        And yeah I don’t get on people’s cases who has a different taste than me. It’s childish, bullying tactics and insecure on a sad level. Fortunately most people here aren’t like that at all and pretty chill even if we do disagree on stuff. For all the others who are constantly trying to shove their opinion down your throat or think you have the nerve to like or hate something they don’t, just keep blocking those people and move on. It’s a much better board for you that way.
        And I think a lot of people who are watching NuTrek are giving the old shows a chance too. I been seeing a lot of posts in other places saying they are watching TOS, VOY, TNG etc for the first time since they started watching DIS or PIC. I also like Prodigy because I think it will get tons of kids to try out Voyager in time as they continue watching it thanks to Janeway being on that show. I imagine that had to be the point too.

Paramount+ wants to be Disney+, but is doing it poorly. I’ll be interested to see if there’s any indication that this foolish timing on their part backfires upon them. Both existing and potential new fans overseas are being told how much less they matter by a company that has global aspirations but doesn’t implement well.

  P+ will never be Disney+. Disney have a massive amount of content between Disney, Pixar, Marvel, SW, Nat Geo and Star there is so much more there than Paramount has going. Especially in terms of new shows and films.
  The Streaming wars are self defeating. People dont want to have the fork out £7-15 every time a new streamer starts up.
  Coupled with the fact the service has been rebranded to waft away the stink of its previous failure CBSAA, now they screw over international fans.
  They there is no such thing as bad publicity, but in this case it’s pushing a lot of people to boycott and kick Paramount in the bank balance.
  A change of leadership at the top is inevitable when share holders get out of their superjets and see their pockets are a bit lighter after this debacle.

That will be a disappointment for Paramount+ when they will see the international numbers how many people watched the premier. All who is very much interested will be over it by that time from different sources. They should postpone it everywhere or nowhere.

Oh no! What terrible news! How will I ever get over the fact that the Michael Burnham show is not going to be on Netflix anymore? I won’t be able to keep score of how much she cry’s per episode or how many times someone is corrected on the proper use of pronouns? The horror the horror!

US Trekkie here but plenty to gripe about!
Between this and “Center Seat”, I get the feeling the universe doesn’t want fans around the globe to enjoy “Star Trek” content anymore. Sad that money grabs and contract BS are keeping fans from enjoying their favorite TV show.

Well this is a slap in the face to all UK viewers, as Paramount+ will reportedly not be available as a standalone app at all, and to watch it you will need to subscribe to sky TV to get it, absolutely ridiculous as I don’t want any live TV, I currently have Netflix and Disney+ and would happily sub to Paramount+ if it was a standalone App, so looks like I won’t be able to watch any Star Trek for years now, not happy

How can I watch Star Trek: Discovery

Pluto TV is a free-to-use online streaming platform, and the new home of Star Trek: Discovery for the UK and most of Europe. The latest episode will be broadcast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week at 9 p.m. GMT on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi series channel, starting February 11.
