It was announced, right after the finale of Season 5, that Matthew Davis's character, Alaric Saltzman, who left the show at the end of Season 3 after being killed, would return as a regular for Season 6.[30] On May 16, 2014, it was revealed that Michael Malarkey, who portrays Enzo St. John, would become a series regular in season 6.[31]

On July 12, 2014, Gabrielle Walsh was confirmed to have been cast in the guest role of Sarah;[32] two days later on July 14, Colin Ferguson was cast in the guest role of Tripp;[33] and on July 16, Emily Chang was revealed to have been cast in the role of Ivy.[34]

On April 6, 2015, Nina Dobrev announced her departure from the series at season's end on her Instagram page. There was immediate speculation as to whether the series would continue without Dobrev, but the continuation was confirmed.[35] It was also announced that Michael Trevino would also vacate the role of Tyler Lockwood after season 6.[36]

Critical response[edit]

Based on 16 reviews, the sixth season holds an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 7.71 out of 10. The site's critics' consensus reads, "The sixth season of The Vampire Diaries attempts to give Elena the fondest farewell amid the murderous melodrama."[37]

In the series finale of The Vampire Diaries, fans bawled their eyes out watching the Salvatore brothers fight over who would die to save the town of Mystic Falls. In the end, Stefan (played by Paul Wesley), newly human again, sacrificed his future with his wife, Caroline (played by Candice King), to save his brother, Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder), and the town he has loved for nearly two centuries. “You have quite literally an eternity with Elena ahead of you,” Stefan reminds Damon, before injecting his brother with the cure for vampirism and taking his place.

But Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, co-creators of The Vampire Diaries, didn’t always intend for Stefan to be the only brother to die. In fact, Williamson always imagined Elena ending up with Stefan — not Damon — and he would have wanted to return to the love triangle before the series finished.

In an interview with Deadline, he said, “Well, I always thought it would be Stefan and Elena. They were sort of the anchor of the show, but because we lost Elena in season 6, we couldn’t go back. You know Nina could only come back for one episode — maybe if she had came back for the whole season, we could even have warped back towards that, but you can’t just do it in 42 minutes.”

Watching the finale now — which ends with Elena (played by Nina Dobrev) and Damon living a long life together after Elena finishes medical school, walking down the street holding hands, and eventually finding peace with their late family members — it’s hard to imagine how the show’s could end any other way.

But the initial plan was for Damon to die. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Plec said, “Back in season 2, when Kevin and I were sitting in the mall and we had fallen in love with this series and this story about two brothers who loved the same girl, and the love triangle was kicking into high gear, we said to ourselves: When all is said and done, when this show is over, both brothers should die in the name of saving their girl and then be watching her like ghosts ... as she went off into the sunset to live her life and maybe marry Matt Donovan or maybe become a doctor, but that those brothers would be side-by-side watching her live.”

The love triangle between Stefan, Damon, and Elena has always been a strong point of The Vampire Diaries, and the emotional resonance between all three characters made it a truly impossible choice throughout the years. Season six was arguably one of Damon and Elena’s more dramatic seasons, because she chose to erase all good memories of Damon after she thought he died. (He was actually trapped in a magical prison world.) When Damon finally returned, a lot of fanfare was made of the two reuniting, since all Elena could remember of Damon was that he was “a monster.”

The episodes of CW's hit blockbuster supernatural drama "The Vampire Diaries" season 6 gets more intense!

In the recent third episode, entitled "Welcome to Paradise", Elena asks Alaric to erase Damon her lover from her memory. So at present, she sees him as the evil brother of her best friend Stefan. And then, Elena and Stefan got reunited. Sarah remembers everything about Elena, since magic cannot be used in Mystic Falls.

In the fourth episode of the series, Stefan proposes to Elena Gilbert and gives her a ring, according to International Business Times. According to Christian Post, their moment together will be disturbed by the appearance of a visitor they did not expect.

Damon and Bonne are still entombed in the Mystic Falls in the 90s setting. But then after they meet Kai, a mysterious being, Bonnie begins recuperating her abilities, which helped them track their way back home. Regrettably, Damon has to go through a time in his past again as this will guide them as they find their way back home. What will be his reaction if he finds out about his brother's proposal to the girl he loves?

Meanwhile, Wetpaint moves forward the intensity of events in Episode 6, entitled "The More you Ignore Me, the Closer I Get". It was revealed that Enzo has been caught by Tripp, with the latter soon to uncover the other supernatural beings. Upon knowing Enzo's captivity, Caroline joins forces with Matt and Stefan in order to save Enzo and to prevent Tripp from discovering their real identities. Sarah has got some new knowledge about her past, so he goes into Tripp's office. She is shocked because Matt is also there, in search of some truth, too. Alaric finds out that Jo cannot be compelled, so he requests Elena to check Jo's past. Elena has no choice but to cope with the results of what she has done.
