Window too small for air conditioner Reddit

Hi, I live in Raleigh NC where the summers are hot and humid. I have a 22 x 24 foot garage. I have a man-cave on one side of the garage and I use the other side as a home office. I would like to find a solution to cool (and heat if possible) that is relatively inexpensive and easy to do.

Challenges include: Insulation - Not sure if insulated, walls are framed in with siding (used to be a carport).
Budget - I would like to be in the $500 range. Electrical 1 - I do not have 230V, only 115 in the garage. I have a fridge in the garage - too much for one circuit? Electrical 2 - I have a separate circuit just outside the garage, but would require an extension cord. Windows - My windows are double hung, but quite short - total dimensions are 33"x33" with a 13" opening without removing sashes. Ceiling - 10 Feet high - requires more BTU than normal for this square footage.

Positives include: Exposure - Very little direct sunlight

My current thinking is that a window unit would be the best solution, but due to BTU required to cool such a large space, and such short windows, i would need to make modifications to my windows such as removing one or both sashes and replacing with wood to hold the unit in place.

Would love to hear some alternative ideas please.

Window too small for air conditioner Reddit

I moved into a room in a townhome and it has a super narrow window. Less than 19" wide but plenty of height. https://i.imgur.com/bb2M0LH.jpg. Since i can't stand the heat I was thinking of a window AC. Any suggestions for ones that small?

Can you just mount the window unit on its side?

level 2

Didn't even know that was a thing. Can all of them be mounted on the side?

level 1

Get a portable unit that exhausts out the window

level 2

Also a really good idea, you can cut the plastic window insert easily.

level 2

Seems like whenever I read about comparing the two, Window units are always preferred considering the price and how well they cool versus portable units.

LG makes a 18" unit. Turning a regular ac on its side is probably a bad idea. It needs a bit if water in the bottom and I'm not sure if gravity has a role on the liquid coolant.

level 2

I don't know about the coolant but definitely the oil in the compressor.

I was looking at those too, but they claim 22" as the smallest size, probably because of the bracket it has to sit on to be installed. The other option I looked at was the other U shaped one that goes the other way from Soleus, but even that one would require me to custom cut the side pieces that complete the seal for the window as they assume a bigger window too. 20" windows must just not be normal.

Fiance and I have a lovely new old farmhouse. There's no opportunity for central air in this home, so we are looking at adding a window unit upstairs. Currently, there aren't any. The windows are small and I'm having a helluva time finding something that would work.

pic of one of the windows.

Don't mind the horrifying cracks. I'm in the process of repairing the plaster.

The window openings are 19 x 12 in. Does anyone know of a product that could work? Thanks!

I live in an old apartment with horrible insulation in Florida. My central AC works fine, but it has a tough time keeping the place cool and no matter what I tell maintenance they just tell me the AC is fine it's just the heat outside.

I've been looking at portable ACs but everyone says they're awful, either super loud and/or terribly inefficient. Window ACs are supposedly the best option, but everywhere I look I see similar reviews of people saying they're loud and breaking down all the time, or the installation process is awful.

So I'm looking for something small, super easy to install that can just cool down my bedroom during the summer months when I get home from work. Can anyone recommend me a model to fit my needs?

Edit: I don't mind paying extra for something that'll work well.

Window too small for air conditioner Reddit

I need an air conditioner for a medium sized master bedroom. I've had great difficulty finding one which fits a 16" window. The only air conditioners I've been able to locate seem to be made for casement/sliding windows, while I have a window which opens vertically. Does anybody know if you can place an AC unit meant for a casement window in a window which opens vertically? Am I better off purchasing a portable AC unit (what are people's experiences with those)?

Thanks!

What if my window is too small for an air conditioner?

Your best bet is to use foam tape. The AC should come with a couple feet of it already, to cover the cracks between the AC unit and the window, but you can buy an extra roll if you need more. Or, you could try installing the AC with one curtain, mostly collapsed, though that might still be too wide.

What is the minimum width on a window air conditioner?

You want to install a window AC. Most 10,000 BTU or 12,000 BTU window AC units require a window that is at least 20 inches wide. Yes, you can opt for one of these smallest window AC units that require about 17-inch window width but those produce only 5,000 BTU or 6,000 BTU of cooling output.

Does window size matter for AC unit?

But a crucial part of buying a window unit A/C is to correctly size it to the room. If you size an A/C unit too large for the room's needs, you end up paying for cooling capacity that you'll never use and a unit that cycles on and off too much to function efficiently.
