Yours, Mine and Ours vs Cheaper by the Dozen

In a viral clip on social media, a woman claimed that the 3rd remake of Cheaper by the Dozen is eerily similar to the plot of Yours, Mine, and Ours. The trailer then sparked debate on the internet.

On February 7th, Disney released the trailer for the upcoming movie, Cheaper by the Dozen, set to be released on Disney+ on March 18th.

The video posted to Tiktok has over 30,000 likes and 300,000 views. It showed a woman who goes by the username @jennytuell14 explaining that the writers of the movie might've gotten the plot mixed up with Yours, Mine and Ours.

Cheaper by the Dozen is based on the lives of the Gilbreth's and the book they've written about their family. It was first turned into a movie in 1950. 50 years later (in 2003), the movie got its first remake with Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt, and Hilary Duff. The comedy film follows two parents taking care of their 12 children, showing how things can get out of control fast. Martin's version got a sequel as well.

The 2022 version, however, has a different background than the previous movies. Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union star as a recently married couple who combined their families. Now, they take care of 10 children together.

Like TikTok user @jennytuell14, fans noted the similarities to Yours, Mine and Ours because the movie is also about a blended family. This movie had two remakes with first one in 1968 and the next in 2005. Others compared it to the Brady Bunch.

"Yes exactly," @Tazmin commented. "When I saw the trailer I was like ummmm this is the plot of yours mine and ours."

"This was the first thing outta my mouth when I saw they were doing a blended family... I was like so it's not cheaper by the dozen then....," @Eva wrote.

"How did nobody on the staff or cast notice this," @Alex commented.

@mseducator81 chimed in saying, "They have the story of the Brady Bunch, with some more kids."

"I just want a 3rd cheaper by the dozen with the OG siblings," @Jen added.

Users on Twitter are shared their thoughts, too, and they didn't mince words.

"Cheaper by the dozen is when the dude can't stop f***ing his wife, when they combine two families that's Yours mine and ours, get it right," @TchaglerTimothy wrote in a viral post gaining over 2,000 likes.

"There should be a rule to leave classic movies alone," @Van_Giggz said.

Yours, Mine and Ours vs Cheaper by the Dozen

In early 2003, it was announced that MGM and Paramount would partner on remaking the Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) property.  After the similarly themed remake of Cheaper By The Dozen (2003) hit it big at the end of the year holiday box office, the project was fast tracked to development.  In July 2004, producer Robert Simonds, who also produced Cheaper by the Dozen (for FOX), landed a first-look deal at MGM to make comedies for the studio.  The first assignment the lion gave him was Yours, Mine and Ours, which became a problem when the sequel to Cheaper By The Dozen also began to move forward and he was producing two rival movies.

According to Simonds, he remained attached to both pictures because he expected one of them or both of them to fall apart in development.  MGM was in the process of being acquired by Sony and Yours, Mine and Ours could have easily been put into turnaround during the merger.  As for Cheaper By The Dozen 2, Steve Martin did not have a sequel deal at FOX and negotiations could have easily broken down.  Both films did land a greenlight and Simonds tried to remove himself from Yours, Mine and Ours, but MGM threatened the producer with a breach of contract lawsuit.  FOX was also furious with Simonds but ultimately agreed to remove him from their sequel, where he was expected to land his largest payday.

The budget for Yours, Mine and Ours was $45 million and it was financed by Paramount and MGM.  Paramount would take domestic rights and MGM would have international.  This also marked the final greenlight from long term Paramount head Sherry Lansing before she left her post and it was also the last MGM greenlight before they were merged with Sony.  Once MGM was in the Sony fold, their new corporate parent handled the international release for the film.

Paramount dated Yours, Mine and Ours as their Thanksgiving holiday release.  It was positioned to get in front of Cheaper By The Dozen 2, which was set for release right around the corner on December 21.  It bowed against Rent, Just Friends, In The Mix and The Ice Harvest.  Yours, Mine and Ours would also have competition with blockbuster holdover family fare Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Chicken Little.

Reviews were awful, but Yours, Mine and Ours opened with a solid $17,461,108 ($24,321,341 five-day holiday gross) — placing #3 for the frame led by Harry Potter.  It then sank 52.7% to $8,258,472 in its second session and declined 38.8% to $5,051,879 in its third weekend.  The domestic run closed with a mediocre $53,412,862.  Paramount would see returned about $29.3M after theaters take their percentage of the gross — which would almost cover P&A expenses, but none of the budget.

Sony saw dismal results in the international market, where it cumed just $18.6M.  Paramount’s corporate parent Viacom announced in their quarter report that the underperformance of Yours, Mine and Ours and Get Rich or Die Tryin’reduced studio revenue 5%.
