What you need to know

Minnesota: The Big Ten West hopefuls are off to a solid 3-0 start as they open conference play behind a proven 1-2 offensive punch with veterans at quarterback in Tanner Morgan and running back in Mo Ibrahim. The latter is averaging a tough 154.7 rushing yards per game and has scored 7 times already. Minnesota lost top receiver Chris Autman-Bell to injury, leaving tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford the team's next-best target. The Gophers also boast the 2nd ranked total defense in FBS, allowing just 17 total points and 170 yards per game.

Michigan State: Coming off a cross-country loss at then-unranked Washington as the 11th ranked team, Sparty is now itself unranked as it returns home to start the rebuild on one of college football's worst pass defenses. Payton Thorne is coming off a 323 yard passing performance in the loss and is 3rd in the Big Ten with 7 passing TDs so far.

No. 3 Ohio State opened the 2022 Big Ten portion of the season with relative ease on Saturday night. The Buckeyes handed the Badgers a 52-21 win in both teams' first conference game of the year, wracking up 539 yards of total offense while holding the visitors to Ohio Stadium to just 296 yards.

If the Scarlet and Gray weren't considered the Big Ten favorite heading into the weekend, they certainly are coming out of it. But this is just the start and Ohio State will have to prove itself week in and week out through the end of November.

Next up is the final of five straight home games when Rutgers comes to Ohio Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The next week is the first road trip of the year for the Buckeyes, who head to East Lansing to take on Michigan State.

On Monday, the Big Ten released its complete schedule for Week 6. The Scarlet and Gray and the Spartans will kick off at 4 p.m. ET on ABC at Spartan Stadium on Oct. 8.

Ohio State and Michigan State have met 50 times in the history of the two programs. Over that stretch, the Buckeyes have dominated the series, owning a 35-15 mark against the other team from the state up north.

The first meeting between the two teams came in 1912, a 35-20 win for John Macklin's Spartans over John Richard's Scarlet and Gray in Columbus. In fact, the Green and White won the first three meetings between the two programs before Woody Hayes' Ohio State finally got a victory, 30-24, against Biggie Munn's Michigan State in 1959. It wasn't until 1960 that the Buckeyes finally made a trip to East Lansing, coming home with a 20-10 win.

Although there was a stretch under head coach Mark Dantonio where the Spartans won three out of six games against the Scarlet and Gray last decade, the more recent contests have all gone the way of Ohio State. The Buckeyes have won six straight in the series dating back to 2016, including winning the last four games by an average margin of 35.6 points.

Following the trip to East Lansing, the Scarlet and Gray will have their off week before a six-game stretch to end the 2022 regular season. The only game of those six that has a kick off time is the regular season finale against rivals Michigan.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State football has faced Michigan State twice since C.J. Stroud joined the program, with each serving as a pivotal moment in his career.

He’ll try to make that a third time when the Buckeyes travel to East Lansing on Oct. 8 for their first road game of the season. The game will kick off at 4 p.m. on ABC.

The quarterback’s first trip to Michigan State was in 2020 as Justin Fields’ backup, watching him lead OSU to a 52-12 win despite being down basically the entire offensive line. Wyatt Davis was the only starter in his original role that day, while Harry Miller moved to center with Josh Myers, Thayer Munford and Nicholas Petit-Frere out with positive COVID-19 test.

Fields walked away with 199 yards and two touchdowns on 17 of 24 passing, adding another 104 yards and two scores on the ground, leaving plenty of room for backups tp get snaps.

Stroud played in the second of three games that season but made the most of his opportunities with a 48-yard touchdown run. A run that turned out to be both his longest and most impact of his career.

His second meeting showed off more of what makes him a potential NFL Draft pick. Stroud vaulted himself to the front of the Heisman Trophy race going 32 of 35 or 432 yards and six touchdowns in a 56-7 win over a Spartan team ranked ninth with the world watching. Most of that production came in the first half and even feature a stretch of 17 straight completions, tying a record set by J.T. Barrett in 2017.

“We did a decent job today,” Stroud said after the game. “Definitely never satisfied until after the end of the end.”

OSU is 35-15 all-time against Michigan State and is currently on a six-game winning streak. Its last loss came at home in 2015 went the Spartans ended its chances to repeat as national champions in the second year of the College Football Playoff era. It was the second time in three years they’d played spoiler to a Buckeye season early in Urban Meyer’s tenure, with the other being in the 2013 Big Ten championship game.

This Saturday, Ohio State (4-0) will face Rutgers in what will be its fifth straight home game. Michigan State (2-2) will look to snap a two-game losing streak when it travels to Maryland.
