What is the distance between the object and the image if the object is 4 cm in front of the plane mirror?

Text Solution

Solution : Fig shows the imges B and B. of the object A by the mirror in its initial and new positions.

Initially the distance of the object A in front of plane mirror M is AM=25 cm, therefore the image is at a distance MB=25 cm from the mirror M behind it. Distance betwee the object A and its image B=25 cm+25cm=50cm.
On shifting the mirror by 5 cm away from the object, the new distance of object A from the mirror M. Becomes AM.25.5=30cm. The new image B. is now at a distnace M.B.=30 cm behind the mirror M.. Hence
(i) The new distance AB. between the object A and the image B.=30cm+30cm=60 cm.
(ii) Taking the position of the object A as reference point, the distance between the two positons of the image BB.=new distance of image from the object, AB.-initial distance of image from the object AB=60-50=10cm.

The distance between the object and its image formed by a plane mirror appears to be 24 cm. What is the distance between the mirror and the object?
