Fruits Basket season 3, episode 13 release date

Fruits Basket airs for the final time on Tuesday 29th June on Funimation.

Fruits Basket season 3 number of episodes

While the first two series consisted of 25 episodes each, Fruits Basket season 3 delivers a total of just 13 episodes. Occasionally a show can find itself with a shorter run in its final year, but if the story can be wrapped up with a satisfying conclusion in that timeframe, fans will surely not be disappointed.

What is Fruits Basket about?

The anime series was first broadcast in 2001, before being rebooted in 2019. Fruits Basket follows high school student Tohru Honda who is taken in by the Soma family after the loss of her mother. She discovers that almost every member of the family is cursed: 12 of them are possessed by the spirits of the Chinese zodiac.

They each turn into their zodiac animal when they are under stress, weak, embarrassed or hugged by someone of the opposite gender. Tohru promises to keep the Soma family's secret, and their lives are improved by her presence. She sets out to break the curse, encountering vengeful spirits along the way.

Fruits Basket cast

Among the English speaking voices in the cast of Fruits Basket are Laura Bailey (known for her roles in the Spider-Man TV series and DuckTales) as Tohru. Eric Vale plays her classmate Yuki Soma - through whom she meets the extended family. Lydia Mackay voices Kyoko, Tohru's late mother who appears to her via flashbacks throughout the series.

Jerry Jewell voices Kyo, while John Burgmeier and Mikaela Krantz play Shigure and Momiji Soma respectively. Rounding out the cast are Colleen Clinkenbeard (Akito) Kent Williams (Hatori) and Justin Cook (Hatsuharu).

Back in March, Funimation released an official subbed version of the trailer ahead of its third season, which you can watch here:

Although we don't have an English-speaking trailer, the site did release a dubbed clip of Kyo's confession to Tohru in the most recent episode – seen below if you're in need of a catch up:

Like the manga of Fruits Basket, its popular anime met with the audience for the first time in 2019. The anime series, which does not distract its fans from the series with its new seasons every year, is at the top of the anime charts in many countries. The anime is adapted from Natsuki Takaya’s manga that has been published since July 18, 1998. The first anime of the series was directed by Akitaro Daichi and aired in 2001. In 2019, the second adaptation work began, which will lock the audience on the screen for three seasons. Standing out with popular anime such as Dr. Stone and Megalo Box, the studio TMS Entertainment carried out animations in all anime seasons. Licensed by Funimation and Crunchyroll, the last season of the anime was followed with interest like in the previous seasons. The series was also broadcast weekly in Japan between April 6, 2019, and June 29, 2021, on TV Tokyo, TVO, TVA, AT-X channels. Now fans around the world are wondering if the anime could have a fourth season.

What was the Fruits Basket telling about?

Toru Honda recently lost her mother in a car accident. After her mother’s death, she moved to her grandfather’s house, but after a while, she left here too to not disturb them when her grandfather’s own family settled in the house. Toru now lives in a tent and makes a living by working as a cleaner after school.

Toru maintains her optimistic attitude against all the negativities she has experienced. Toru stumbles upon the Soma family’s house while wandering in the forest one day. Here she meets her handsome but cold classmate Yuki Soma. Yuki lives with her two cousins, Kyo and Shigure. The Soma family invites Toru to their house in return for cleaning and cooking. Toru, whose tent was destroyed by a landslide the night before, has no choice but to accept it.

However, Toru will soon be faced with the strange truth. The Soma family is cursed with the spirits of animals in the Chinese calendar. Each individual has the soul of an animal, and when he hugs a person of the opposite sex, he becomes the animal he is cursed with.

Will there be a fourth season of Fruits Basket?

At the time of writing, as of June 20, 2022, TMS or any anime-related company has not yet renewed Fruits Basket for a fourth season. The third season of the anime was quite emotional and satisfying. According to many viewers, it was the best season of the series. The final season of the anime was titled “Fruits Basket: The Final“. This title made all viewers think that we will not see another season. Because the story was completed and there was not much chance for a fourth season. Unfortunately, it looks like there won’t be a fourth season of the anime in the future. Because the manga, on the other hand, is now completely adapted into the anime.

The manga series written by Natsuki Takaya was published between July 18, 1998, and November 20, 2006, and consists of 23 volumes in total. This manga, which is the source material of the series, is no longer ongoing, and it is almost impossible to continue it one day. The fact that the entire source material has been used in the three seasons puts hopes for a fourth season to zero.

Generally, the production companies renew the really popular animes for a new season because they see it as profitable. From this perspective, Fruits Basket was a very profitable product. Although it didn’t achieve great success in disc sales, it did well on online video streaming platforms such as Hulu TV. (Fruits Basket sold 2691 discs on volume average in the first season, 1830 in the second season, and 1817 in the first volume of the final third season.)

The series, which achieved 7.68/10 by Myanimelist users, ranks 357th in the popularity ranking of all time. Besides, it has a strong search volume on Google. Looking at it, more people are searching for it than popular animes like Mob Psycho 100 and Food Wars!. If there were enough source materials, we would be sure that there would be a new season, but the lack of source material and the fact that the last season was announced as the final season leaves no other possibility. Although there will not be a new season, everything is not over yet…
