In 1999, Jordan Segundo was a young student with dreams.  He had the passion and heart to pursue his goals, but no definite path on how to achieve them.  One day he was at a phone booth in Waikiki, where he discovered a piece of paper with writing on it.  He read the scribble and knew that this message was meant for him.  The words on that paper were “Champions are not those who never fail.  Champions are those who never quit!”  That quote became Jordan’s motto for his journey in life.

Raised in Kalihi with a humble background, it was not always easy for this Farrington High School Graduate.  Jordan started working as a teen at Jamba Juice in Waikiki, often catching a bus to and from work after school.  He knew at an early age the importance of hard work and determination.

Jordan loved to sing and his family was very supportive of his talent.  His mother, Jody Segundo, entered him into numerous local singing competitions, including Oceanic Cable’s “Kiddieoke” and “Road to Fame”.  He began participating in those competitions at the age of five and he did not win until he was thirteen years old – never giving up for eight years.  He could have easily stopped his quest to achieve success, but he did not.

Along came a nationally-televised singing competition in 2002 called “American Idol”. Jordan watched Season One of this show and thought, “I can do that”.  He did not have enough money to fly to L.A. for the auditions, so he entered a local singing competition with the hope of winning First Prize – roundtrip airline tickets to the “American Idol” Season Two auditions in L.A. with hotel accommodations.  Jordan won!  He flew to L.A., stood and slept on the ground in line for three days waiting for his turn to audition and he made it into the Top 32 Finalists of Season Two.  This was a huge accomplishment since over 75,000 singers across the nation auditioned.  Jordan was the first singer from Hawaii and the first Filipino in the nation to be chosen as a Finalist on “American Idol”.  He prepared to represent Hawaii as a singer in this prestigious talent competition and sang his song choice – “For Your Love”.  Although he sounded and looked great, the Celebrity judges (Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson)  gave Jordan harsh criticism and he did not progress in the competition.  Disappointed with the outcome, Jordan returned to his home state of Hawaii, hoping he did not let down the people he loved. To his surprise, the 50th State embraced him and expressed their pride for his achievement.

“American Idol” launched Jordan into a professional singing career that offered opportunities to perform in concerts, shows and festivals across the states and throughout the Hawaiian Islands.  He was privileged to sing with American and Filipino Celebrities like Jennifer Hudson, Jim Brickman, Lani Misalucha, Martin Nievera, Sheryn Regis, Michael Paulo, Regina Belle and more.  In 2006, Jordan was invited to play the leading role of “Lun Tha” in The Hawaii Opera Theatre’s production of “The King and I”, with Richard Chamberlain in the role of The King.  His popularity skyrocketed with invitations to perform in The Honolulu Symphony, at The Pro Bowl Games at Aloha Stadium, as a featured performer in “Wowowee”, The Moscow International Circus and much more.

In 2005, Jordan released his first full-length CD featuring ten songs in a variety of styles.  The CD entitled “Jordan” was released under his own independent label, JWS Records and is currently available online on iTunes.  His other musical recordings include two songs for a Christmas Compilation for a Children’s Orphanage in the Philippines and Tom Moffatt’s Legacy 2 Compilation CD in 2012.

In addition to singing, doors began to open for Jordan in broadcast.  The KHON2 News followed Jordan’s journey on “American Idol” and offered him various reporter and hosting positions at their station.  Jordan gained considerable on-camera experience, taking on different roles including commentator for “American Idol”, FOX VIP Correspondent and as a weekly host on “Living808”.  He was able to cover red carpet events on the mainland, interview nationally-acclaimed actors like Kelly Ripa and learn what goes on in the news room.  He loved it!

After getting comfortable on-camera, Jordan was able to expand his horizons even more onscreen as an actor and added credits including commercials, voice-over work and a principal role on the TV series, “Hawaii Five-0”.  He co-hosted a televised dance competition called “Destination:  Groove Dance Hawaii” for twelve episodes, and also co-hosted six episodes of “Ohana Road”, a televised automotive show.  He was evolving into a versatile entertainer that was in-demand locally and nationally, learning from experience and striving for the best.

Jordan elaborates, “Wanting to be the best that I can be inspires me in all that I do.”

Although Jordan’s schedule was busy with performances and appearances, he made time to give back to charitable organizations and the community.  He knew how it felt at a young age to have a dream, and he wanted to encourage students to reach for their goals.  Therefore, he become a spokesperson for Adult Friends for Youth and the D.A.R.E. program motivating the youth of Hawaii with his story and instilling his motto to “never quit” into his presentations.  Over the years, Jordan reached thousands of students with his inspirational message.  Due to Jordan’s high-profile status, the children and teens gravitated towards him.  It was very gratifying for this role model to influence the students to make the right choices in life and continue to pursue their dreams.

Jordan’s message for the younger generation is, “Always remain humble.  Appreciate those who help you along your path.”

In addition to these two youth programs, Jordan assisted The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii with video productions and performances, animal organizations promoting pet adoption, and other worthy non-profit groups that called upon him.  Jordan chose to help because he can relate to overcoming obstacles,

“I know what it is like to have nothing, to struggle through life.  I know that it can all be gone in a flash.  Things have not always been easy, but I’ve learned through my life experiences that you’ve got to keep on going.  It’s through challenging times where we learn to grow.”

As Jordan approached his mid-twenties, he realized his career goals were adjusting to doing more in broadcast.  He decided to return to college at the University of Hawaii Manoa and earn a bachelor’s degree in Journalism.  Jordan graduated from college in May, 2016, but KITV4 offered him a full-time position with their Island News Team as weekend weather anchor and weekday reporter five months before his graduation date.  Two years later he became the weekend morning anchor and weekday weather anchor on Good Morning Hawaii.  Jordan was already well-known for his talent as a professional singer, but his popularity as a broadcast personality quickly made him a household name.

Born and based in Hawaii, Jordan had a desire to see more of what the world has to offer.  With his keen determination, he decided to expand his search to work in broadcast in a larger market on the mainland.  After sharing his demo reel, it did not take long for offers to come his way.  Now it was time to decide on what city and job would be the best fit for him.  After careful evaluation, the decision was made.  Jordan accepted an offer to become the new CBS13 Weather Anchor (KOVR) and Good Day Sacramento Anchor/Reporter (KMAX) in Sacramento, California (Top 20 Television Market), a duopoly owned and operated by CBS Corporation.

Beginning January 9, 2019, Jordan started his new schedule on the CBS13 team, Monday through Friday as weather anchor from 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. and then on the station’s flagship program, Good Day Sacramento as anchor/reporter from 7:30 to 10:00 a.m.  You can actually see Jordan on the live stream on both of these shows if you wake up early (California is two hours ahead of Hawaii).

Jordan expressed his feelings about his career move, “I am thrilled about my new position at CBS Sacramento.  It is a wonderful opportunity that will allow me to showcase my passion for broadcast television.  I look forward to sharing the Spirit of Aloha with the people of California.”  Regarding moving away from Hawaii, Jordan said, “Moving to California is a big change, but I’ve always wanted to experience living outside of Hawaii.  Sacramento is a great city with a lot to offer and I’m happy to call it my new home.”

When asked what Jordan will miss about Hawaii, he replied, “I will miss Hawaii’s weather and the natural beauty, such as the stunning sunrises and sunsets, and, of course, the beaches.”  He followed up with what he is looking forward to doing on the mainland, “I look forward to exploring different cities and trying new restaurants.  I’m really looking forward to seeing the snow up at Lake Tahoe.”

(Jordan has never experienced snow.)

Jordan’s love of singing has never faded and he will still be able to enjoy the best of both worlds – broadcast news and singing.  With his weekday work schedule, Jordan can continue to sing and perform at select concerts, festivals and shows in Hawaii and on the mainland, especially since most of these events are scheduled on weekends.  He is already scheduled to perform on multiple dates in Honolulu, including entertaining as the headlining singer at The Super American Circus at The Blaisdell Arena on March 29, 30 and 31, performing songs from “The Greatest Showman.”

Jordan happily remarked, “Singing will always be one of my biggest passions and I’m thankful that I’ll be able to continue performing in Hawaii and on the mainland.  No matter where my career takes me, music will always be a part of my life.”

At the age of 34, Jordan has a list of goals that he diligently works hard to conquer.  After working in the Top Twenty Market, he plans to go for the Top Ten Market and eventually on network television.

Through every experience, Jordan remains grateful, “I would like to thank the people of Hawaii, especially the Filipino community for their support throughout the years.  I am grateful that I get to live my dream and share my passion with the community.  I am also grateful to my family for always inspiring me to be my very best.  And to my Manager, Nancy Bernal, for guiding me along my journey.”

Jordan has always been a spiritual person, searching for a deeper purpose and meaning in life.  Was it destiny when Jordan discovered that piece of paper with the quote about Champions?

Jordan still has that exact paper framed as a reminder and he says, “The quote inspires me to keep working hard towards my goals.”

Jordan Segundo is truly a “Champion in Life”.
