Who played soda in the outsiders

Sodapop, sometimes called “Soda,” is the middle of the three Curtis brothers. He is energetic, disinterested in school, and movie-star handsome. Ponyboy describes his idolization of Sodapop from the very beginning, and says his brother “gets drunk on just plain living,” a quality he deeply admires. In contrast to his distant and tense relationship with Darry, Ponyboy’s relationship with Sodapop is one of admiration and trust. Both boys share a bed, and Sodapop serves as a symbolic security blanket for Ponyboy, especially since their parents’ deaths.

Sodapop’s happy-go-lucky personality easily masks his inner turmoil. After finding out that Sodapop is upset because his letters to Sandy went unanswered, Ponyboy realizes that he “never had paid much attention to Soda’s problems.” At the end of the novel, Sodapop is the character who finally unites the Curtis family, after he breaks down in tears over his brothers’ constant fighting. He reminds Darry and Ponyboy that they “ought to be able to stick together against everything” since they’re all they have left family-wise. The brothers agree to stop fighting so that they can stay together. Because of Sodapop, Ponyboy is able to look more favorably upon Darry, and realize how much his oldest brother has sacrificed for their family.

Who played soda in the outsiders

It was 1967 when 17-year-old Oklahoma teenager S.E. Hinton published The Outsiders, a book about the hurts and dreams shared by two groups of high school kids who grew up on opposite sides of the tracks. The book spoke to teenagers worldwide and 16 years later was made into a Francis Ford Coppola-directed movie that introduced the world to a cast of hot but oh-so cool unknowns, most of whom went on to the Hollywood big time.

Parade traced the paths of The Outsiders movie cast and caught up with what they’re up to now.

Thomas Howell (Ponyboy Curtis)

Before playing the main character, the youngest of the Curtis boys, and a greaser who loves to read in The Outsiders, Howell starred in E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. Since then, he’s kept working—on TV in Grimm, Criminal Minds (as a serial killer), Southland,24, SEAL TEAM and The Terror, as well as in the movies LBJ, Red Dawn, and many more.

Matt Dillon (Dallas Winston)

As Dallas, Dillon played the bad boy with a heart. So what's he up to now? For decades, he has continued playing good guys, bad guys, and everything in between in movies, on TV, and on Broadway. Dillon starred in two other movies based on S.E. Hinton books—Tex and Rumble Fish. Catch him most recently in the movie Head Full of Honey.

Ralph Macchio (Johnny Cade)

Johnny, the abused boy who dies after he saved a group of little kids from a church fire, was the only role Macchio wanted in The Outsiders. Best known from the original Karate Kid franchise, Macchio has continued to act in other movies such as My Cousin Vinny. He most recently resurrected his Daniel LaRusso character with the YouTube Premium and Netflix series Cobra Kai.

Patrick Swayze (Darrel “Darry” Curtis)

A professionally trained dancer, Swayze was the oldest of the actors when he played the oldest of the Curtis boys, Darry, who gives up his dreams to care for his two younger brothers after their parents died in a car crash. Women worldwide fell in love with Swayze in his two biggest movie roles that followed The Outsiders—dancer Johnny in Dirty Dancing (which just turned 30!) and Sam in Ghost. Sadly, Swayze lost his battle with pancreatic cancer and died at age 57 in 2009.

Rob Lowe (Sodapop Curtis)

After playing Sodapop, the high school dropout who works at a gas station, Lowe’s career exploded in movies and TV. Although he has been a heartthrob, Lowe has proven himself as an actor who can play comedic roles (the Austin Powers movies and Parks and Recreation), oddball parts (Californication and The Grinder), and serious drama in The West Wing and Code Black. Last year he starred in ITV's drama Wild Bill.

Emilio Estevez (Two-Bit Matthews)

Son of Martin Sheen and brother of Charlie Sheen, Estevez also appeared in Tex before playing the goofy, boozy friend of the Curtis brothers in The Outsiders and later, in another Hinton book-turned movie, That Was Then, This Is Now. He starred in The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire and The Mighty Ducks, among many other films. In 2006, Estevez wrote, directed, and acted in the critically acclaimed Bobby, a movie about the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy. Most recently, he directed and acted in The Public, a film he also wrote.

Tom Cruise (Steve Randle)

Although his role as Steve, a friend to the Curtis boys who works at the gas station with Sodapop, was not a major one, Cruise went on to a career with nothing but top billing. He’s a box office superstar with movies such as Risky Business, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Top Gun, and the Mission Impossible franchise on his resume. Cruise is confirmed to reprise his role as Maverick in the new Top Gun: Maverick (coming 2021).

Diane Lane (Cherry Valance)

Lane, the only major female star in The Outsiders, plays Cherry, a Soc (one of the rich kids). Her boyfriend is Bob, also a Soc, but she admits that she could fall in love with Dallas. Although Sir Laurence Olivier called her “the new Grace Kelly” after she acted with him in A Little Romance at age 13, Lane’s acting career was a slow burn. She also played in Hinton’s Rumble Fish, then became well-known years later following A Perfect Storm, Unfaithful, Under the Tuscan Sun, and Cinema Verite. Most recently she appeared in the TV series House of Cards and the 2019 movie Serenity.

Leif Garrett (Bob Sheldon)

Playing a Soc who beats up Johnny, mistreats Cherry and dies by Johnny’s hand wasn’t Garrett’s first acting gig. After acting in many ‘70s shows, he became a singer and instant teen idol with hits such as “I Was Made for Dancing.” He quit singing, resumed acting and later returned to music. His most recent acting gig was Fish Mich in 2009, and his latest album, Three Sides Of…, dropped in 2007. He has a new book coming out this year, titled Idol Truth: A Memoir.

Sofia Coppola (Little Girl)

She played a little girl in The Outsiders, was directed by her dad and used her stage name Domino in the credits, but Coppola veered from the acting route, instead choosing to work behind the camera as a writer, director, and producer. She wrote and directed The Virgin Suicides, and wrote, directed, and produced Marie Antoinette, A Very Murray Christmas and Lost in Translation, for which she won the Oscar for best screenplay. Her latest, On the Rocks, was released in 2020.

S.E. Hinton (nurse)

The author of the book, S.E. (Susie) Hinton played a small part in the movie The Outsiders. (She was Dallas’ nurse when he was in the hospital.) In the film version of her book, Tex, she was Mrs. Barnes and in Rumble Fish, she was a hooker. Her most recent acting appearance was in a 2011 episode of Supernatural.

Flea

The Red Hot Chili Peppers rocker made an uncredited appearance in the movie before making a splash as a musician.
