Once again, Washington Football Team pointing due north into DecemberAfter Monday’s win, Washington (5-6) is in position for the seventh seed in the NFC playoffs. Of course, the “seventh seed” is a completely made-up NFL device to allow more mediocre teams — like, well, the WFT — to stay in the playoff hunt longer. Presumably, that would mean more home fans attend their teams’ games later in the season. That was not the case Monday, as folks stayed home in droves from FedEx Field. Even the lower bowl had plenty of empty seats. The announced crowd was 52,680. That seemed … enhanced. David Aldridge·GO FURTHER Once again, unlikely personnel and a bit of luck have the Washington Football Team pointing due north into December November 30, 2021 at 6:46 AM EST Washington Football Team having ‘fun’ againLANDOVER, Md. — What happens to the football underdog when it becomes the conqueror? That’s a question the Washington Football Team might need to ponder. The immediate answer for a team that started the season losing six of eight but rallied for a third consecutive victory that puts you into the playoff field seems to be this: Your coach walks off the field amped and cursing. “Let’s (expletive) go!” Ron Rivera screamed moments after Washington’s 17-15 victory over the Seahawks on Monday night at FedEx Field. Adam Coleman·November 30, 2021 at 12:24 AM EST Putting the Seahawks' offensive struggles in perspectiveIn three games since Russell Wilson returned from injury, the Seahawks have scored three touchdowns on 30 offensive possessions. They ranked 28th in EPA per drive during that span. Only the Lions have fewer wins than the Seahawks in the NFC. Only the Lions, Jaguars and Texans in the entire NFL. And Seattle doesn't have a first-round pick in 2022. Huge decisions this offseason for that franchise. November 30, 2021 at 12:22 AM EST Postgame with Pete CarrollWhen asked after the game what to make of Russell Wilson’s missed throws lately, Pete Carroll said, “Film doesn’t lie. We’re missing some stuff.” When asked if he’d pull Wilson if the QB continues to not perform, Carroll said Wilson has to make his plays and he imagines that he will make those plays going forward. So no, no QB change coming. And what about a staff change? Carroll didn’t want to answer a question about whether he’d consider staff changes on offense if that side of the ball continues to struggle. I’ll take that as a “no,” though. November 29, 2021 at 11:46 PM EST Washington hangs on for 17-15 win over SeattleWashington combined an overpowering defensive performance and 146 scrimmage yards from Antonio Gibson to defeat Seattle 17-15 in the Week 12 Monday night game. The Football Team’s defense held Seattle’s offense to six three and outs in this contest, including a string of five straight at one point. That ties for the most consecutive three and out drives by a team this season. Gibson was Washington’s go-to offensive player, as he racked up 111 rushing yards on 29 carries and added in 35 receiving yards on seven receptions, but J.D. McKissic was the Football Team’s closer, as he scored on a 10-yard reception and a 10-yard run. McKissic didn’t get a chance to make it three, however, as he was injured late in Washington’s last drive and was carted off the field. That series ended with what appeared to be a three-yard touchdown reception by Logan Thomas, but the scoring play was overturned on review. Russell Wilson then led Seattle on its best drive of the night, going 96 yards in 10 plays to close to 17-15 on a Freddie Swain 32-yard touchdown reception. Kendall Fuller intercepted the two-point attempt on the next play and Washington recovered the subsequent onside kick to close the game out. This contest did have an odd record of sorts, as defensive lineman Rasheem Green became the heaviest player in NFL history to score a two-point defensive conversion since rule changes made that type of play possible in 2015 (per NFL Research). Seattle (3-8) hosts San Francisco next week. Washington (5-6) travels to Las Vegas to play the Raiders in Week 13.
