Why is Jayson Tatums number 0?

The Boston Celtics seemed to have a ready-made nickname for wing duo Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum -- 7/11, the numbers they both wore for the Celtics' Summer League squad.

Tatum, however, wore the number 0 in his year at Duke. After Avery Bradley was traded to Detroit to make room for Gordon Hayward's signing, that number became available once again, and Tatum appears to have snatched it up.

The rookie seemed to confirm it with this tweet.

7/11 was fun while it lasted, folks.

Tatum and Brown appear to be excellent complements on the wing -- two athletic young stars that can switch on screens and play multiple positions. Tatum is a more natural scorer, with smooth footwork and excellent ability to finish both around the rim and in isolation. Brown is the better athlete, a high-flyer who can likely guard more positions and can bring thunderous dunks down even through a contest. Add in the fact that both players were selected No. 3 by the Celtics -- both via picks conveyed by the Brooklyn Nets -- and there was a clear need for a duo nickname.

Alas, the most natural nickname now makes no sense, and Tatum can't (and probably wouldn't) take Robert Parish's retired 00, which would open up 007.

While the internet drums up the best new nickname, let's take a moment and pour out a slushie for 7/11 -- the best nickname for the most entertaining young wing duo in the league for about a week and a half in July.

Why is Jayson Tatums number 0?

Jayson Tatum is one of the more popular players to wear #0 as his jersey number. Back in 2020, the Celtics star revealed why he chose to wear the number.

Jayson Tatum is one of the greatest young talents in the league today. Despite being only 24-years-old, the Boston Celtics star has proved that he has what it takes to be a leader on a championship-contending team. There is no doubting his potential or the fact that JT is going to be one of the league’s future faces.

Definitely, the 6-foot-8 forward has millions of youngsters looking up to him as their inspiration and wearing his jersey number because of it. However, for Tatum himself, Wizards legend Gilbert Arenas was the reason why he selected to wear #0 on his kit.

Back in 2020, during quarantine, Tatum had a little Q&A session on his Twitter where he revealed the significance of selecting #0.

“Gilbert Arenas was one of my favorite players and I stuck with it”: Jayson Tatum

During his 4 years at the Chaminade College Preparatory School, JT repped the number #22. Wearing that number, the then-high-school phenom found quite the success he aimed for.

As he enrolled at Duke University, Tatum hoped to continue with the same number. However, the Blue Devils had retired the number for their former point guard Jay Williams.

The then-18-year-old decided to go ahead with #0 as his “favorite player” Gilbert Arenas wore it and ever since the number has stuck with him.

“Agent Zero” was among the many legends who wore the #0 during his playing days. The former Wizards legend finished his career with 3 All-Star appearances and 3 All-NBA selections.

So far, Tatum has quite an illustrious career. In 5 campaigns, he’s been selected to 3 All-Star Games, 2 All-NBA Teams, won the 2022 ECF MVP, and is currently battling the Golden State Warriors to help the Celtics franchise win their record 18th NBA title.

Clearly, Tatum has been living up to the legacy.

The 7-11 nickname wasn't that good anyway.

Based on a tweet from Jayson Tatum (and that trade the Celtics made), it would appear the Celtics' first-round pick will switch from No. 11 to No. 0.

Last week's trade of Avery Bradley to the Pistons freed up No. 0, which Tatum wore in college at Duke. Though Tatum has worn No. 11 in Summer League play, the Celtics' official team store is selling No. 0 Tatum jerseys.

The team had embraced the "7-11" nickname for Jaylen Brown and Tatum, but Tatum's quote of a Brown tweet suggested that's all over.

So there you have it. The No. 1 player in the history of the world will wear No. 0.

Jayson Tatum explained why he decided to wear number 0 in his college and NBA career.

The forward of the Boston Celtics admitted that he had one particular NBA player in mind when he opted to switch numbers in college, none other than Gilbert Arenas.

When you hear the name ‘Gilbert Arenas’ most of you probably think of the gun inciedent, but Gilbert Arenas was much more than that. He was an elite NBA player, one of the best and most talented guards of our time. He was a three time All-Star and member of three All NBA Teams. In his second year in the league, Agent 0 won the MIP Award. In his prime year from 2003-2007, he was a matchup nightmare.

It turns out that Arenas also is the reason why Jayson Tatum chose number zero as his jersey number.
