Chapter 10: Katniss is furious about Peeta’s story of unrequited love for her. Later, she confronts him and tells him she thinks it makes her look weak. Haymitch tells her it’s her only hope for him to get her sponsors. Katniss recognizes that this is true.

That night, unable to sleep, Katniss goes up to the roof. She finds Peeta there. He talks about how he wants to maintain his identity in spite of the brutality of the Games. They end their conversation with harsh words to each other.

The next morning, Katniss goes to the arena with Cinna who helps her prepare. She wears the mockingjay pin and has a tracker inserted under the skin of her arm. At the close of the chapter, as Katniss is going into the arena she hears the announcer’s voice proclaim that the seventy-fourth Hunger Games have begun.

Chapter 11: In the arena, Katniss has exactly one minute to survey her surroundings. She sees the Cornucopia that is full of supplies and for a moment she decides to disregard Haymitch’s advice to run away. She thinks she’ll run in and get weapons, but she’s distracted by Peeta, and when the starting gong goes off, she’s lost time. She runs to the woods, but not before she witnesses a tribute’s death and is chased by a knife-wielding girl. Katniss has managed to pick up a backpack and piece of plastic on her way.

As she runs through the woods, she is in search of water. As the night falls, she sees on the sky those tributes who died that day: eleven had lost their lives that day. That night she sleeps in a tree. During the night, she witnesses another tribute building a fire nearby. The tribute is soon discovered by a pack of tributes who have formed an alliance. Katniss listens from her hiding place as the pack of tributes argue about whether or not the girl is dead. Katniss recognizes one of the voices as Peeta’s.

Chapter 12: Katniss cannot believe that Peeta has aligned himself with Career Tributes. As she continues her search for water, she contemplates Peeta’s strategy. She is also aware that she is being televised. She travels through the woods desperately searching for water. She is becoming weaker and weaker. She comes to a cluster of berry bushes, but the berries aren’t familiar to her. Rather than risking being poisoned, Katniss leaves the berries and continues her search for water. She is hoping Haymitch will send her water. When he doesn’t, she figures she must be close it, but she collapses into the mud unable to go any further. She realizes there must be water nearby and finds a pond. She spends the rest of the day drinking water and eating – which makes her feel better and better. She beds down for the night, but is awaked a few hours later by a stampede and the smell of smoke. A fire is heading her way.

The audience cheers and goes crazy about Peeta’s declaration of love, but Katniss is livid. When he is done the interview she shoves him into an urn, making him fall and cut his hands. She feels that he had no right to share something like that with the audience. Effie and Haymitch catch up with them and Haymitch tells Katniss not to be angry with him because he helped her out. Peeta made her look desirable and raised their popularity. They had planned this ahead of time but did not tell Katniss because they wanted her reaction to be genuine and that this will help with the sponsors. Katniss realizes the intelligence of the idea and watches the replays of the interviews with them.

Peeta and Katniss say their goodbyes to Haymitch and Effie, because the next morning is the start of the Games and they will not be accompanying the tributes. Haymitch gives them a last piece of advice before the games. He urges them to run away as soon as the gong sounds and the Games begin. There will be a Cornucopia in the center where they start with supplies but they are not prepared to fight the other tributes and will likely lose, therefore the smartest move is to run away and concentrate on finding a water source. Katniss tries to sleep that night but finds she is too nervous about the next day. She goes to the roof and finds Peeta who tells her he expects to die but he is really afraid that they are going to change him. He states that he wants to die as himself and wishes he could think of a way to show the Capitol that they do not own him. She apologizes for pushing him and encourages him to just do his best to stay alive.

In the morning, Cinna accompanies Katniss to the arena where she has a metal tracking device inserted into her. He gives her the gold mockingjay pin and reminds her of Haymitch’s advice. He tells her that if he could bet, his money would be on her and wishes her good luck. She is raised up through a cylinder and set out into the arena with the other tributes. The Hunger Games have officially begun.

Notes:
Katniss continues to learn the art of providing a good impression to the audience and starts to fully understand the intelligence behind Peeta and Haymitch’s strategy to have the couple appear in love. The readers start to understand more about Peeta’s motivation and character when he talks about his fears of losing his identity and becoming a pawn for the Capitol. The lead up to the beginning of the Games allows the audience to empathize with the tributes and understand how terrifying this experience would be, especially for a young teenager.

The tributes are forced to wait sixty seconds before they can start which gives Katniss the opportunity to survey her surroundings. The Cornucopia, an aptly named large structure shaped like a cornucopia, there are supplies and she longingly looks at a backpack and a bow and arrow set. She debates on trying to reach the bow before anyone else but looks at Peeta who shakes his head telling her not to risk it. The gong sounds and she misses her chance, having been distracted by Peeta. She grabs a tarp and sprints to an orange backpack closer to her. She grabs it at the same time as another male tribute but while they are struggling for it he falls with a knife in his back. She grabs the backpack and runs for the woods as a knife hits her backpack and lodges into it. She risks looking back as she runs and sees many of the tributes fighting. Several lie dead on the ground, which motivates her to keep running in the woods while looking for water.

Later in the afternoon cannon sounds go off to mark the death of the tributes. She counts eleven cannon shots, which mean there are now thirteen tributes left. As she is searching for water she wonders if Peeta made it out alive. She searches the contents of the bag and finds a sleeping bag, a little food, some iodine and an empty bottle. She worries that the only water supply is a lake around the Cornucopia, which would be dangerous since it is likely being guarded by the Career Tributes.

She sets some snares and makes her bed in a tree where she secures herself with a belt to a branch. Night falls, and there is the death recap. The faces of the dead tributes are projected into the sky, and with relief she realizes that Peeta isn’t among them. In the morning Katniss hears someone nearby building a fire and can only stay concealed in the tree when several tributes run towards the fire and she hears the girl scream. She realizes that several of the tributes are fighting in a pack and hears them discussing why they have not heard the cannon go off to announce the girl’s death. She hears one person volunteer to go back to make sure she is dead and with a start Katniss realizes that the voice is Peeta’s.

Notes:
With the beginning of the Games, the audience gets their first taste of what Katniss is like during a combat situation. She remains smart, but takes a risk to grab some needed supplies. As Katniss starts to familiarize herself with her surroundings, the audience gets an appreciation for the advantage Katniss has from hunting and spending so much time in the woods while growing up. The vicious reality of the Games is brought to life when hearing about the battle scene at the beginning of the Games.

Katniss is shocked by the news that Peeta would join up with the Careers. She sees him and realizes that he must have fought at the Cornucopia because he is bruised. When Peeta leaves the group to check on the girl, the Career Tributes talk about Katniss, and wonder how she scored an eleven in training. They agree that she should be killed as quickly as possible and that they will use Peeta to find her. Katniss realizes that Peeta hasn’t told them about her archery skills, which makes his motives confusing. She can’t figure out if Peeta is with her or against her.

The cannon sounds and the Careers move away so Katniss can climb down and start to move again. She finds a rabbit in one of her snares, which she quickly cooks and eats so she can move fast in the opposite direction of the Careers. She travels all day with no sign of water. Desperate, she finds some berries to suck the juice out of but remembers that she was warned not to eat any berries she wasn’t sure of. That night she sleeps again in a tree, exhausted and dehydrated. The next morning she continues her search for water and angrily wonders why Haymitch didn’t have a sponsor send her water but she realizes that he may not be sending it as a message so perhaps she is close. She eventually collapses and realizes that she is lying in mud. She quickly finds a small pond and rehydrates before finding a tree to sleep in. In the middle of the night she is woken by a massive wall of fire moving quickly toward her.

Notes:
Katniss spends most of this chapter focusing on the practicalities of surviving instead of panicking which shows her practical and strong character. She questions Peeta’s motives when he joins the Careers and can’t understand why Peeta would not give them the advantage by mentioning her archery skills. This chapter shows Katniss’ cynical side towards others in her life as she can’t conceive why Peeta would help her in the arena, despite their history and friendship. She shows some impressive critical thinking when she realizes she must be close to the water due to the lack of water sent by Haymitch.
