This is the proximity sensor, no need to worry, depending on the light it can have a red glow.

Aliens sometimes use your camera to record what's going on, primarily at night, but most likely just your proximity sensor, as Ingo has stated.

Yes, it is a proximity sensor. If your iPhone is unlocked and you hold the phone up to your ear, you will find that Siri comes on - this is triggered by that proximity sensor.

Thank you so much! I'm a girl and I seriously thought it was someone hacking my phone and watching me through the dot and that's why the light was there. But thank you for telling everyone I think it helped me calm down a lot!!

I'm a girl too and I felt the exact same way I was just staring at the dot with my eyes wide opened and just staring at it because I was SOO freaked out... I eventually covered it with my thumb only thing I had.

Why is there a red light on at the top of my phone [Re-Titled by Moderator]

The red light indicates that the microphone is turned on as it would be when you make a phone call. A yellow light indicates that the camera is on.

It's the infra-red transmitting LED for the proximity detector. It shouldn't come on that bright but there have been reports of problems after upgrading the OS. What operating system are you running? Have you tried a reset?

"There is no bug on 4.3.1"
Well apparently Apple thinks there is, that's why they released 4.3.2
This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including:
- Fixes an issue that occasionally caused blank or frozen video during a FaceTime call
- Fixes an issue that prevented some international users from connecting to 3G networks on iPad Wi-Fi + 3G
- Contains the latest security updates

I'm told that this is true with security cameras as well, that they produce IR waves to help them "see" better at night. It's probably a fair assumption to say this is true with the iPhone as well. (Don't worry, you're not on your own. Even now, five years after you posted your question, my iPhone SE with iOS 10 still has this.) The question thus becomes: why in the world is it doing this when the camera is off?
Aug 11, 2017 12:10 AM in response to Stasi3326
Nah fam I have this theory that it's another camera where people are watching your every move every minute. Then again, I could be wrong.

I think that too. But who is watching you and why?
