The current-generation Lexus IS, when revealed in 2020, was welcomed into the world like a newborn. It offers a great balance of sportiness and sophistication, which makes it a stellar product from the Japanese brand. It's like BMW launching the 3-Series, and very quickly, the world falls head-over-heels for it - and then, the nail-biting among enthusiasts, begins the moment the M3 is readied for production.

Similarly, Lexus has done the same with the 2022 IS 350 F Sport. It comes with added options, better refinement - and the magical blend of a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports sedan means it has a German bully in its sights: the BMW M3. A car that's equally tantalizing and wicked.

The 2022 Lexus IS F Sport also gets a new Memory Package and a power rear sunshade as an additional option. The M3 may have a strong heritage backing it, but the Lexus makes no bones about it. So we dig deeper, even after our exclusive first drive of the car, to see if it wears a cape.

'Stealthy' And 'Sharp' Best Defines The Lexus IS 350 F Sport's Design

We're not going to exaggerate - the IS 350 F Sport looks a thousand times better than the BMW. It does have a large grille, but the outline is such, that it gels with the rest of the silhouette perfectly. There are plenty of aerodynamic bits on this sharp-looking sports sedan. It includes the front and rear bumpers, the rear lip spoiler, the F-Sport 19-inch wheels, bigger rear tires, plus a cool air intake with a sound generator, F-Sport badges, and F-Sport exhausts, which we will come to later.

The stance is similar to that of an athlete; not a Sumo wrestler, but more of a black-belt Karate champion. Those muscular fenders that accommodate the huge wheels, and the fact it's wide and low only adds further to the design you'll be taking in. You know this is a car with high-performance intent, the moment you look at it. The lines might come across as being a bit too much for some of you, but we like how it adds aggression to the appearance of the Lexus.

The sleek headlights look like the ends of a samurai sword; there are DRLs along with a signature L-shape inside the cluster. The headlights have been positioned in such a way that, if you see the car approaching you from a distance - it looks low, almost supercar-like, squatting. To add to it, the bonnet slopes nice and low.

Sharp lines on the sides give it a strong profile, and the sloped rear-quarter pillars look great. Again, towards the rear, the F-Sport looks like it's sitting on its haunches, with those wide hips pushing outwards. Anyone looking at the L-shaped blade-style lightbar, running the width of the rear, is likely to pick up speed and catch a closer glimpse of the car.

2022 Lexus IS 350 F Sport's Comfortable Interior Has A Lux-Appeal

The interior is quite the place to be in; the stainless-steel scuff plates that adorn the door sills look great, and the F Sport front seat surfaces look stylish, particularly if upholstered in Circuit Red. Features include heated and ventilated functions that come standard for the front seats. There's even a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a perforated leather-wrapped shifter, an F Sport accelerator pedal, brake pedal and footrest, and lots of other F Sport detailing inside. Active Sound Control enhances the sound produced by the V6 engine.

You get a 10.3-inch touchscreen that is offered on variants featuring navigation, or the Mark Levinson Premium Audio Package. It also gets 17 speakers with an 1800-watt amplifier. Then there's the usual stuff like Amazon Alexa integration and a whole lot more tech appeal.

2022 Lexus IS 350 F Sport Gets V6 Power

The IS 350 F Sports packs a 3.5-liter V6 that pushes out 311hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. The IS 350 F Sport can either be had with a rear-wheel-drive-only layout or an AWD setup, depending on the driver's intention when at the wheel of the car. The one that comes with a rear-wheel-drive is paired to an 8-speed Sport Direct Shift auto 'box, also found on the IS 300 RWD.

The AWD version, on the hand, gets a 6-speed automatic. While the RWD version of the IS 350 F Sport can sprint from 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds, the AWD model can do it in 5.7 seconds. Our colleague, Bradley, drove the car earlier this month. He sounded thrilled at first, and upon starting the car, he felt it sounded alright. He's left wanting the V8 from the IS 500, but that's highly unlikely, given how engine downsizing is a norm these days.

It's a naturally-aspirated V6, and he quickly starts to wish it had a turbo or a supercharger. The steering wasn't brimming with feel, according to him, and further reports: " The IS 350 F SPORT looks like a red arrow (he drove a red one) took a 10-week CrossFit class, yet out-of-the-box, drove like a casual mall walker."

The torque didn't flatter him either, but he also went on to say just how affordable four-cylinder engines are in sports sedans like this one. After having fiddled with the Drive Mode Select, he put the car in Sport S+, quickly took control of the paddle-shifters, and noticed that the engine had sufficient juice in it.

BMW M3 Has A Hugely Capable Rival In The Lexus IS 350 F Sport
