AC for garage with no windows Reddit

What you want is called a DIY mini split system.

It is cheap and relatively efficient (MUCH more efficient than a portable unit that exhausts outside) and easy to install.

You will have to drill a couple of relatively small holes in the wall somehow; or possibly one 6-in hole. It depends on the make and model.

They are quiet and effective and efficient and relatively inexpensive. Honestly they are the current solution for this type of situation. Please go on YouTube and look up DIY mini splits. One unit will be located inside on your wall; the other unit will be located outside. There are a couple of hoses which connect the two which are set up so that a non-technical person can install them as long as they follow the instructions.

Please ask any questions you have. Please do not get a portable unit.

Here is a video about mini splits; I can't watch it right now but there are many many more, so if this one is lousy please try a different one.

Here is a video about why the portable ones are dumb.

How well insulated the garage is and how much direct sunlight it gets are also important issues. Also, any extra heat that's being added; since it's a garage, it's not crazy to imagine that there's a poorly insulated hot water heater or maybe a non-vented dryer inside of it. Is that true?

Shading and insulating the building can help too.

AC for garage with no windows Reddit

level 1

Portable ac unit and vent it out the roof vent.

level 2

Everything I'm seeing on the internet suggests this barely works with a hose that long. If I'm only gonna be able to cool it down to 85 degrees on a 95 degree day, it's not worth it for me.

level 1

We had a portable AC unit when we were renting. It didn’t always keep it right in the human comfort zone, but working in 80degrees indoors when it’s 95 degrees outdoors is better than nothing

level 1

Where is the breaker in relation to the garage? Mini split is your best option and adding the circuit should cost less than $100

level 2

It’s about 30 feet away on the main house, detached. $100??? I was assuming at least $2000-3000 to add a circuit trenched underground. Am I crazy?

level 1

Short of buying a swamp cooler, you won’t.

level 2

For the non existing window hah

I live in South Florida, so it gets pretty hot down here. I'm trying to air condition our 2 car garage. I've already had it fully insulated, door and ceiling, and now I'm looking at putting in an A/C Unit. I don't think we can afford a mini-split now, and I'm not sure if the HOA would allow one anyway, so I was looking at a portable AC Unit. I was having someone come and install one this week, however, after researching these, the reviews were mixed.

How well would this work in Florida? Would it be able to keep my garage cool, even if I'm shooting for around 80 in the summer (when it gets around 93-95 here). Also, since there's no window and a pesky HOA, he was going to vent it through the ceiling then out through the soffit on the overhang.

AC for garage with no windows Reddit

So I recently turned a large storage room we have into an office. It has enough room for an L shaped desk and my filing cabinents. Only issue is my pc generates heat and my house is insulated like crazy and has 2x6 outer walls completely filled. Plus we need a backup to our central heat and air because no matter what I do ants get into the ac unit and short it out once every couple years and it's a pain to get parts for it. Now my first idea was to cut a hole into the attic and run a tube ac unit into. However the breaker box for the house runs into that room also and as luck would have it wires are EVERYWHERE up there like spiderwebs. They built this old house to last but they didnt wire it worth a crap........So heres my next idea in the corner my desk isnt in on the other side of the wall is our washer and dryer. Could I get a V splitter for the dryer exhaust and hook that tube mounted ac unit to it as well? Would that cause any problems if the dryer and ac unit were running at the same time?
