G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus vs. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4

1989 vette here. I bought some G-Force COMP-2 A/S (275/40ZR17) and after 32,000 km (19,900 miles) they are cracking around the edges. BFGoodrich is going to warranty them, but I have to pay a percentage. They offered me a choice of the G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus, OR Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4. BFGoodrich said that they have changed the rubber compound in the G-Force Comp-2 A/S tire, and are now offering G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus. Note the "Plus" on the end. I'm wondering if anyone is using either the G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus, or Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 ? And what has been your experience ? Also, which is the better tire in your opinion ? Thank you. UPDATE: See post #30 for my final decision.

I tend to prefer the feel of a BFG tire over a Michelin. Had both, just always came away liking the BFGs more. They're really close to the same though.

I have the G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus and have about a 1000 miles on them after buying them last September. They handle well in both dry and wet conditions but the car is not driven in the snow so I am not sure if they are truly an all season tire. They do flat spot a little (not as bad as the Nitto tires I had on my 92) and only at cold temps but warm up quickly. Noise level is low so far.
I have not tried the Michelins on a Corvette but really like them on the German cars that I drive.

I chose the G-Force for the Corvette because I was given a great deal on them, but if they are giving you a choice of either with no difference in cost to you I would go with the Michelins.

I've seen some very positive on the current BFG G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus for another type of car, so I think it's probably a very good tire. However, the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 is the latest and greatest high performance all-season out there and seems to have the very best performance of all of them. If I had the same choice and the money was not significantly different, I'd go for the Michelin in this case. You can't lose either way: it's a choice between "very good" and "great," but why not go for "great" if you can?

Bfgoodrich - g-force comp-2 a/s plus vs michelin - pilot sport all season 4

I greatly appreciate the comments. My last two sets of tires have been the G-Force COMP-2 A/S, and I agree with everyone who thinks these are great handling tires. I'm VERY pleased with their performance and would get them again. The only thing is, in my experience they start to crack around the sides after 4-5 years, and that's with relatively normal driving. So I'm leery about getting the newer G-Force Comp-2 A/S PLUS because I don't want them to crack in another 4-5 years and have to go through this again, although they're supposed to be made with an updated compound. On the other hand, I could get the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4, but they are an UNKNOWN to me in terms of how they handle. Note: Here in Canada the G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus cost MORE than the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 by about $20 a tire. I don't know why that is. Anyway, I'm still trying to decide on which one to choose. Thank you for your help.

FWIW, Michelin owns BFG these days and that change in rubber compound may be related to that: as in maybe they updated the BFG with a compound using Michelin technology. That said, the new Michelin is literally a year old and I believe it to be the best-performing A/S tire out there right now. For the same price or less, I wouldn't hesitate to choose it. At Tire Rack here in the US, the Michelin is $28 more in the 275/40/17 size. You're getting a bargain!

A couple points. The newest, fastest tire is cool and all, but most people aren't gonna push these cars to half of what the fastest tire can do. To 99% of drivers, the fastest tire and the 7th fastest tire are identical.

My experience with Michelin was overall good. I had PSS and As Plus, they had lots of grip at first, but after the outer soft layer wore out, they had much less grip, and got much louder. It was still a good tire, but I don't feel like it was superior to the Hankook v12 I run on my c6 GS now.

But if the Michelin is cheaper in Canadian money, I'd get the cheaper one, haha.

You guys are making some valid and thoughtful points. One thing that makes me lean towards getting the G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus, is that I know how they will handle, which is quite good in my opinion. There will be no suprises, unless the new rubber compound changes their performance. I'm hoping though, that the new compound will STOP these tires from cracking after 4-5 years, but I don't know that. On the other hand, the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 are a little cheaper and have positive reviews in this thread, and I lean towards getting them to avoid early cracking in the G-Force tires, but there is the UNKNOWN in performace. I'm not gonna lie, I'm on the fence. I have a couple days to decide. Again, thank you for your help.

They likely use the same compound between the two honestly. We all like to feel like we are getting more for our money... But honestly in manufacturing its more cost effective and profitable to share parts and charge more for perception. There's nothing I herently more expensive about a softer compound, so it's more profutablue to share compounds and just use marketing to tell people the Michelin version is more better er and worth sending more on.

Got about 3,000 miles on my BFG G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus's and pleased with them. Was out today and hit a short period of rain and stayed very confident.

It's extremely unlikely that Michelin would introduce a brand new tire in 2020 that reuses a compound from at least five years prior. More likely, the current BFG shares the compound from the PS A/S 4's predecessor, the Pilot Sport A/S 3. And of course it will have different carcass construction as well. They also have significantly different treadwear ratings, the BFG at 400 and the Michelin at 540. It's worth reading the Tire Rack test reports for both of them. Again, both are easy to recommend, but I think the Michelin is a bit better if it can be had at the same price.

I put on the g-Force AS plus and only have 900 miles on the but one data point I can offer is the price I paid. $165 each mounted and balanced. Bought in Southern Maine.

I was under the impression that the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 were rated slightly higher than the G-Force Comp-2 A/S Plus, but tirerack.com has G-Force rated as 1 out of 29 in Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires, and Michelin is 2 out of 29. I compared the Survey Stats halfway down the page at the links below, and the G-Force is rated higher in several categories. Am I reading this wrong ?

That may be simply because it's new. A lot if times I see that they list newer tires as projections vs tested data. Without looking anyway. Honestly you're probably splitting hairs. Both tires (and manufacturers) are top notch imo.

Thank you for your insight 84 4+3, I actually hope I am splitting hairs. I have experience with the G-Force Comp-2 A/S (non-plus) and I know how they handle. I like them. But, I don't like how they crack in just a few years, which is why I'm contemplating getting the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 in hopes they won't crack so soon, but I have NO IDEA how they handle. It is a big UNKNOWN for me. Does anyone have any pictures of a C4 with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 ? Again, thanks to all for your input.

Why would you think they would be less likely to reuse a currently produce compound vs reintroducing a decade old compound? The difference in treadwear rating is just that, a difference in ratings. That's a rating the manufacturer assigns, ostensibly based off comparison to their other tires, and not necessarily linearly. So a 400 BFG (who makes truck tires that can last like forever) could be the same as a Michelin that focuses more on high end, high performance tires.

Either way, I highly doubt they developed a new compound for the BFG tires. They may be using an old version, they may use a lower cost version of the new compound, they may use the same, but I figure if it was my company, I would use the new compound and have it tiered. If it meets my tighter specs, it goes to the tier 1 product (Michelin), if it didn't it would go to tier 2(BFG). Incidentally, that's exactly what we have done in various manufacturers I've worked with, haha.

I thought the BFG was a few years old in its current iteration. If so, it's significantly older than the new Michelin. That's why I assumed BFG would have used the compound from the previous Michelin. Maybe the current BFG is just as new as the current Michelin, though? Whatever. Either way, we both seem to agree that the BFG is likely a slight step behind the Michelin in performance. That's not to say it's a bad tire by any means, and for the price differences we have in the US the BFG should seriously be considered. But if they're the same price or the Michelin is actually cheaper where the OP lives, then I don't see a good reason to go with the BFG.

I purchased my BFGs from tirerack in September and had to wait for a couple of weeks. Tirerack indicated the Plus was so new they were waiting on delivery but had the old ones without the plus designation in stock if I wanted those right away. Not sure if the compound changed but the tread pattern did. Maybe thats all that makes them plus.

Are Michelin Pilot Sport 4 good in the winter?

Surprisingly, the Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 4 tires handle well in the snow.

How long do Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires last?

They are suitable for many coupes, sedans, and sports cars. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4s is one of the rare few with a tread wear warranty, of 30,000 miles.

Can you drive Michelin Pilot Sport 4S in winter?

The Pilot Sport 4S excels in warm dry and wet conditions, so like all Max Performance Summer tires, is not intended to be serviced, stored nor driven in near- and below-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

What replaced Michelin Pilot Super Sport?

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (PS4S) succeeded Pilot Super Sport (PSS) in 2017. PSS was the benchmark for ultra-high-performance tires until PS4S was launched as its replacement. From our experience, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is unrivaled in wet braking, dry traction, and tread life.
