Can you get cash out with Apple Pay at Woolworths

18 June 2019: Woolworths Credit Card customers can now use Apple Pay to make transactions with a tap of their device.

With Apple Pay on iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac, customers can make fast and convenient purchases in stores, in apps and on websites using their card.

The move, which is a first for a supermarket branded credit card in Australia, builds on Woolworths Rewards’ integration with Apple Wallet, introduced in 2017.

Woolworths Head of Financial Services, Digital and Payments, Paul Monnington said: “We’re seeing digital wallets grow in popularity because they offer quick, seamless and hassle-free payments for customers.

“With the launch of Woolworths Credit Cards with Apple Pay, we’re pleased to be extending choice and convenience to all of our card holders.

“Now that both the Woolworths Credit Card and Rewards cards are available in the Apple Wallet, customers can avoid pulling out their wallet and simply tap their iPhone or Apple Watch to pay for, and earn points, on their next shop.”

The Woolworths Everyday Platinum Credit Card offers customers 10 percent off their Woolworths grocery shop once a month and no annual fee for the first year.

Security and privacy are at the core of Apple Pay. When you use a credit card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on your device. Each transaction is authorised with a one-time unique dynamic security code.

Apple Pay is easy to set up and users will continue to receive all of the rewards and benefits offered by Woolworths credit cards.

With iPhone and Apple Watch, customers can pay with Apple Pay in stores, restaurants, taxis, vending machines and many more places. When shopping in apps or on the web in Safari with Apple Pay, there’s no need to manually fill out lengthy account forms or repeatedly type in shipping and billing information. Every Apple Pay purchase is authenticated with just a glance or a touch with Face ID or Touch ID, or a device's passcode.

Recently tried a cashout at Big W using Google Pay with both Visa and MasterCard debit cards for two different banks (St George and Bendigo). In each case the transaction was declined. Anyone know if this is an issue with Google Pay or specific banks?

Cashout is done via EFTPOS not via Visa/Mastercard (as they are credit networks). Some banks (like UP) allow you to paypass via EFTPOS on phones, but others (like ING) do not.

On an iphone, when you double click the lock button, if the card supports it, it will have two options to choose from: Visa/Mastercard and eftpos SAV. Cashout might work with eftpos SAV (haven't tried it), definitely won't work with Visa/Mastercard.

Today marks the first time an Aussie supermarket is joining the banks by offering Apple Pay to its credit card holders.

The release comes as the next step after Woolworths integrated its Rewards Card with Apple Wallet back in 2017.

“We are seeing digital wallets grow in popularity because they offer quick, seamless and hassle-free payments for customers,” Woolworths Head of Financial Services, Digital and Payments Paul Monnington said.

“With the launch of Woolworths Credit Cards with Apple Pay, we’re pleased to be extending choice and convenience to all our card holders.”

Customers will continue to receive all the rewards and benefits that come with the Woolworths Everyday Platinum Credit Card, like 10% off their Woolworths groceries once a month, and now they have the option of simply tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch to make purchases.

Is Apple Pay safe?

Apple Pay is highly secure and protects the privacy of all card users.

The unique numbers on the physical credit or debit cards you receive from your bank, or supermarket, aren’t stored on the device. Instead each transaction uses a one-time security code and unique Device Account Number (specific to your phone) to make purchases, which is then connected back to your card account.

You can use Apple Pay in store, at restaurants, on a taxi fare and even to make online purchases through apps or web browsers.

To make purchasing even more seamless, you can also connect Apple Pay with your unique Face ID or Touch ID that is stored on your phone, so buying things can be as easy as a simple glance or touch.
