Chris Kirby, owner/operator of the Chick-fil-A on Williamson Boulevard in Daytona Beach, is one step closer to getting his wish of demolishing the popular restaurant.

But have no fear fast-food fans, it will come back bigger and better than ever. Mr. Kirby plans to build a larger Chick-fil-A with an additional drive-through.

Mr. Kirby and Kendra Lewis, permit manager at Interplan LLC., attended the Aug. 25 Daytona Beach Planning Board meeting, seeking approval to rezone the about 1.2-acres where the Chick-fil-A sits.

What Mr. Kirby would like to do is increase the square footage from 3,295 to 4,960 and relieve traffic congestion by adding a second drive-through lane and changing the location of the entrance.

Planning Director Dennis Mrozek, said, “They’re very good at what they do over at Chick-fil-A. People go there on a regular basis. It's just crazy busy. It's busy enough so that it does back up onto (International Speedway Boulevard). The (proposed) entrance for this is actually internal to the site now. So now they're going to have to go to the back of the property kind of closer to the Big Lots, and that's where they enter the property, and that's where they have the two lanes.”

Mr. Mrozek noted vehicles wouldn’t “be stacking back onto a street. If there's any stacking, it's going to occur in a parking lot where the Big Lots is.”

A majority vote of the planning board was required and attained, pending a review of off-site parking. If the off-site parking is in compliance with the Land Development Code, the Daytona Beach City Commission will consider the request for initial approval Oct. 5 and final approval Oct. 19.

Ms. Lewis said if all goes as planned, construction would begin in “early December” and last “for several months.”

Chick-fil-A employees will be offered work at other locations while construction is ongoing. Other ones nearby are in Edgewater, Ormond Beach and Port Orange. Some employees have indicated they are looking forward to taking time off.

Mr. Kirby detailed a third option, “If I can’t find a place for everybody and (his employees) need to go get a job somewhere else, if it's lower payment than what I'm paying them, then we'll just offset that and pay the difference for them.”

Once the restaurant is re-opened, he expects to hire 40 to 50 more people, making total employment to 150.

Mr. Kirby touched on an interesting note unrelated to the rezoning request. He expects a grilled cauliflower sandwich, currently “in-test,” to be “brought out” to market.

Another established business went before the planning board that evening. Ashley Furniture, along with developer The Sembler Co., is seeking approval of a site plan at Tomoka Town Center for a 61,057-square-foot store next to the new Rooms to Go. The 5.8-acre lot is undeveloped. It possibly would replace a store on International Speedway Boulevard.

Cobb Cole attorney Jessica Gow, representing Sembler, said, “Just my fun note of the night is that with this going in right beside Rooms To Go, it’s creating what I call a furniture row. I think it’s going to be a one-stop shop.”

Planning Board Member Milverton Robinson expressed concern about a void being created by companies leaving ISB. The companies that leave ISB are “abandoning one section of town to go to another section of town. And for me, it creates a disparity in terms of the city,” Mr. Robinson said.

Ms. Gow could not confirm if, like Rooms To Go, the Ashley Furniture store will replace the one on ISB.

The board approved the request.
