Damon & Elena Break Up… Again

Tired of having to apologize to Elena for the unstoppable parade of skeletons from his closet, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) decided to let her go — again. She didn’t want to break up, but he insisted, leaving her alone to weep by the fireplace.

Dear friends, can we all agree how stupid that was? I get that this show loves dragging its main couples through the ringer, and I agree that ‘happy’ Damon and Elena were starting to get stale, but did he really need to dump her so suddenly? It’s always one step forward, three steps back with Damon — and I’m not sure it’s even worth Elena’s effort anymore.

A Fist Full Of Enzo

In other news, Damon’s long-awaited reunion with Enzo went less-than-swimmingly. Still bitter about Damon leaving him for dead back in the ’50s, Enzo wasn’t exactly willing to help him find Elena, instead engaging him in a fight to the death. Neither ended up dying, obviously, but they did share an oddly romantic pause while Damon literally held Enzo’s heart in his hand. It was nice.

OK, now let’s talk about Enzo for a minute; more specifically, let’s talk about how much I love him. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but he’s bringing a certain something to the show that’s been missing this season. Maybe it’s his accent, reminding me of Mikaelsons past, or maybe he’s just the perfect foil for Damon. Either way, I hope he sticks around forever and ever.

Matters Of The Heart (Attack)

Speaking of emotional baggage from decades past, Katherine spent the hour bonding with Nadia (Olga Fonda) over her newfound desire to stay alive — until Nadia realized her interest had everything to do with Stefan (Paul Wesley), and nothing to do with her.

Still, Nadia gave Matt (Zach Roerig) the Traveler’s Knife in case Katherine decided to dump her dying chassis and soul-jump into a new body, which she did — but her change of heart may have come too late. The episode ended with poor old Katherine falling down the stairs, having suffered from an apparent heart attack; and not the fun, musical, Demi Lovato-style heart attack. The real kind.

I kind of figured Katherine wasn’t long for this world — that girl has survived way too many times — but you’ve got to hand it to The Vampire Diaries writers; before killing Katherine off for good, they totally made us care about her, nearly making us forget all of the horrible things she’s done over the years.

Bravo, writers. Bravo.

HollywoodLifers, do you think Katherine will really die? Are you annoyed that Damon and Elena broke up for the millionth time? Did you miss Jeremy’s arms as much as I did this week? Drop a comment with your review of the episode, as well as your thoughts on the episodes to come! Happy hiatus, everyone.

The Elena, Damon and Stefan love triangle on “The Vampire Diaries” has always been complicated, and it’s going to get worse in the second half of season 5.

Fans of the CW series are well aware that Damon has been pining over the brunette beauty since season 1, when Elena was dating his brother, Stefan. Their relationship made the jump from friendship to steamy lovers in season 4, but Damon and Elena didn’t find themselves with a fairytale ending. Instead, they were faced with a sire bond, college and the mysterious “doppelganger fate.”

Ultimately, Damon broke up with Elena in the season 5 midseason finale after another horrifying and gruesome chunk of his past was revealed, but the two found themselves being pushed back together in the midseason premiere by someone surprising -- Stefan! The youngest Salvatore spoke separately with Elena and Damon, revealing to both of them that they’re perfect for each other and need each other.

The selfless act of helping his brother and ex-girlfriend put Stefan on the path of moving on. But unfortunately for Stefan, Katherine’s nasty little Traveler trick is going to set him back a little bit.

Katherine has made it very clear that she’s into Stefan and despises Damon. And while she’s in Elena’s body, the doppelganger is going to be doing everything she can to mack it with the youngest Salvatore.

“Oh, she’s going to be at her best of no good,” executive producer Julie Plec dished about Katherine to E! Online. “The thing that’s so great is that she’s so into Stefan right now and so not into Damon right now, and yet Elena was about to reembrace her relationship with Damon and Damon was all ready to win back his girl, so you can only imagine how that’s going to go down.”

Fortunately, fans of the show don’t have to wait too long to watch the drama unfold because the CW already has some revealing photos up!

A photo from episode 12, "The Devil Inside," appears to show Damon trying to have a heart-to-heart with Elena outside of the Lockwood mansion. But by the looks of their stance, it doesn't appear as if the conversation is going the way Damon wants it to. Elena stands motionless while Damon grips her with passion. The look on his face makes it appear as if he's trying to get through to her -- potentially about how he feels about her. But if Katherine is inside Elena, the conversation isn't going to leave Damon smiling.

A second photo from episode 12 shows Damon looking glum. While we won't know the reasoning until the episode airs on Thursday, Jan. 30, one theory is that he looks sad because Elena refused to give him a second chance.

If the photos from episode 12 weren't suspicious enough, the stills from episode 13 are pretty revealing. "Vampire Diaries" fans can't deny that things have been awkward between Stefan and Elena ever since she started dating Damon. We can't picture Elena agreeing to dance with Stefan because it would drive Damon mad. But this photo would make sense if Elena was still being possessed by Katherine.
