In an announcement that truly did catch the golf world by surprise, Phil Mickelson and his caddie, Jim “Bones” MacKay, decided to end their working relationship together after 25 years. The pair said they would remain friends, but that the time had simply come for a change.

There were all kinds of theories floating around in the aftermath of the news, but one interesting event people have been highlighting is the heated exchange between Bones and Phil on 17th hole during the second round of this year’s Players Championship.

Mickelson had started the day strong, making the turn in three-under, but began losing steam on the back nine. Bogeys on 13 and 15 were mitigated by a birdie on the 16th. A good score on TPC Sawgrass’ famed par-3 17th would go a long way in closing out a good round. At the very least, he couldn’t afford to make any more mistakes.

What followed was a feisty exchange between Phil and his caddy about which club he should hit. Mickelson wanted to hit a pitching wedge. Bones thought he should hit a nine iron. They argued about it calmly, but pretty intensely.

Mickelson eventually compromised by hitting a hard pitching wedge. His ball took one hop on the very back of the green and bounced straight into the water. If a hard pitching wedge was too much club, a nine iron surely would’ve been way off.

Mickelson would go on to make the cut, but that ensuing double bogey all but ended his chances of winning the event. The PGA Tour has extended highlights of his second round right here.

Tim Rosaforte has a nice breakdown of it all on Golf Channel, which you can hear around the 20 second mark.

As Rosaforte notes, it’s hard to believe a 25 year relationship would break down over something like this, but it was perhaps indicative of an longer-standing issue between the two. That Bones began offering Phil more information than he wanted or needed, and Mickelson simply wanted a caddy to fulfill a different role as he enters the twilight of his career. It may have been, to use a cliche, the last straw on the camel’s back.

Phil Mickelson has added several wrinkles to his on-course persona in the PGA Tour restart, including wearing sunglasses and walking around the course with a huge Yeti cup of his Coffee for Wellness blend.

The story of Phil's coffee concoction -- apparently now available for sale -- is somewhat documented already, but why has Phil Mickelson been wearing sunglasses on the PGA Tour after spending his entire career not wearing them?

Mickelson explained why he started wearing sunglasses while playing golf during Saturday's third round of the 2020 PGA Championship, when he went into the 18th tower with CBS Sports at TPC Harding Park to provide riveting commentary.

“During the COVID break, I did this Carac cream, which is like a skin cancer chemotherapy treatment on your face, for like two weeks, and your skin blotches up and you kill these cancer cells that you can’t see and when I went outside, I had to wear some protection so I wore these glasses to protect the area around my eyes," Mickelson explained.

As it turned out, the cop-style shades really appealed to the five-time major winner.

“I liked them," he said. "They didn’t move around on my face when I was swinging. I went out and played with them, and I thought ‘Oh, I’ll give it a try.’ So that’s kinda where it started and then my eyes were much more relaxed at the end of the day, they weren’t squinting the whole time.”

Mickelson admitted the look isn't for everyone, but the comfort of great golf sunglasses should be for everyone. The benefits are tremendous for your eyes, including protection from dangerous UV rays, improved vision, less eye strain and perhaps even better putt reading.

Mickelson didn't say which sunglasses he is wearing, meaning he's probably not getting paid to wear them (yet) because he would otherwise hawk them pretty hard. However, Roka sunglasses makes a style that's pretty close, called the Falcon Ti Polarized.
