Euphoria season 2 episode 2 full episode

“Out of Touch” continues right where we left off, with Nate badly beaten by Fez, maybe even brain-damaged, as Rue’s narration suggests - what difference would it make, really?

As Nate is rushed to the emergency room, accompanied by the clicky-clacky heels of the two women doting over him, Nate’s feverish dreams fantasize about a future with Cassie, about starting a wholesome suburban family, occasionally interrupted by Nate’s domineering dad, Cal; even in his own subconscious, Nate can’t escape his shadow of his father.

Nate awakens, under the impression that he is in love with Cassie, seemingly imbued with a new lust for life. And this kind of makes sense; Cassie is beautiful, submissive, and whiter than a picket fence, the kind of girl a manipulative, status-obsessed sociopath like Nate would be happy to cheat on for the rest of his life.

Hence, Cassie spends most of the episode stressing about Maddy finding out about her sordid sort-of-affair, while Nate deliberately emphasizes Cassie’s betrayal, even pausing during cunnilingus to remind her that she’s a bad person.

Maddy already seems to sense that Nate is seeing someone else, through sheer psychic will, a supernatural instinct for gossip. But as Jules reminds her, Maddy doesn’t see herself the way others do, and doesn’t understand that she deserves better than Nate. This simple conversation is loaded with juicy context, as Jules understands how unhinged Nate really is, from past experience of being stalked by him, while Maddy knows that Jules was raped by Cal, having watched the tape.

Meanwhile, Rue and Jules seem happy and in love, but there’s a lot left unspoken in their relationship, simmering just below the surface. That underlying tension briefly shows its face when Rue bumps into Elliot and awkwardly downplays their friendship, terrified that Jules will find out that the two share a passion for getting high out of their minds.

Jules instantly suspects that Rue has feelings for Elliot, and she might be right; Rue only seems to open up while intoxicated, and she’s always sober in front of Jules, or at least, pretending to be. It’s only a matter of time before unresolved tension spills out onto the surface, souring their relationship before it has the chance to flourish.

Kat appears to be enjoying a picture-perfect relationship with Ethan, while secretly guilting herself over the fact that she just doesn’t like him very much. Kat’s two daydream sequences prove the hilarious highlight of the episode; the first shows Ethan being brutally slaughtered by a generic fantasy warrior, a bit like an off-brand Jason Momoa, who jackhammers the former dominatrix into submission, right in front of Ethan’s bleeding corpse.

The second shows Kat struggling with self-loathing, only to be inundated by an army of Instagram and TikTok influencers, who demand nothing less than unadulterated self-love, flaunting their perfect figures and faces, blaming Kat’s insecurity on the white-hetero-cis-patriarchy and verbally assaulting her with hollow platitudes.

The scene viscerally captures the feeling of being bullied into confidence by annoying internet personalities, all without showing a single screen. It also sets up Kat with the interesting problem of not really having a problem at all.

Cal is determined to find out who sent his son to the hospital (nobody is allowed to assault Nate except Cal, clearly). Nate, however, is keeping the secret to himself, so Cal interrogates Lexi and Cassie, shamelessly intimidating the two sisters right in front of their mother; it goes to show what one can get away with, with friends in local law enforcement.

Cassie obviously panics and spills the beans, leading to Cal loading a gun and setting off to meet Fez at his “workplace.” Lexi is already there, and is dismayed to see that Fez is hanging out with Faye; she seems to assume that the two are sleeping together, and Fez won’t clarify the situation, being a man of very few words. Still, Lexi seems to like him, even after witnessing his violent side.

As Cal enters the gas station, the scene plays like a tense standoff from a Spaghetti Western; it’s all in the eyes, as Lexi tenses and withdraws, Fez notices her discomfort, and a wordless glance to the ever-reliable agent of violence, Ash, implies that if there’s going to be trouble, Ash will handle it.

Cal carefully assesses the situation, while Ash gets ready to murder another civilian; violence seems inevitable, until Cal decides to simply pay for his snacks and leave, making sure that Fez knows he has a target on his back.

After Cal arrives home and smugly tells his son the news, Nate lies to his father, claiming that Cal’s taped sex session with the underage Jules sparked the conflict, his delivery deliciously cold and casual. Cal, stunned that his son managed to turn the tables on him, asks where the tape is (recorded nonconsensually, of course).

We don’t hear Nate’s answer, and I’m pretty sure Maddy still has it, but Nate likely has every reason to lie, just to hold some leverage over his dear old, deeply perverted dad.

“Out of Touch” contains a lot of setup, brimming with love triangles and “hate triangles,” assuring us that there’s plenty of drama ahead for our troubled teens.
