Gluten free Easter eggs Australia 2022

Welcome to my gluten free Easter eggs Australia list for 2022. Holy heck! I don’t even know when Easter is this year but with the way supermarkets work I’ve seen all the Easter eggs and goodies in store since the 26th of December – yikes!

I’ve spent an entire afternoon (and then some) reading through Easter egg ingredients online and in-store so you can shop with confidence. Please always double-check before buying just in case, I am only human! I’ll keep updating this in the lead-up to Easter – sign up to my newsletter to ensure you don’t miss any new finds!

How to use this list

I’ve grouped the chocolates by brand and listed them alphabetically so you can use the search function to find your favourite. I’ve grouped the dairy free and vegan eggs together, you can jump to it here.

You’ll be able to find most of the big brands in Coles and Woolworths (Woolies). Where something is a bit trickier to find or an exclusive item I’ve listed the location after the product – such as white chocolate Lindt bunnies at Kmart. If you’re having trouble finding something, drop me a message on Instagram.

Bonvita

A relative newcomer to the gluten free Easter eggs scene in Australia. Or perhaps I’ve just never heard of them! Bonvita is a speciality chocolate brand making vegan chocolates that are also gluten free. I have not put them into the diary free list as they note a may contain for dairy on their ingredients. I’ve seen Bonvita available from a number of online speciality retailers, including Happy Tummies.

• Chocolate bar with white bunny & choc buttons, 100g (vegan but may contain milk)

• White chocolate half eggs with raspberry, 100g (vegan but may contain milk)

Cadbury

Cadbury is normally a no-go on their regular chocolates due to ‘may contains’ however much of the Easter range by Cadbury are coeliac-safe. So far, the best allergen information I’ve come across online is the Coles website, this is because it lists the may contains – the Cadbury website does not do this on all listings. I’ve had to zoom in and look at the back of the packet! Here’s my list of coeliac-safe gluten-free Cadbury Easter items, including all the mini eggs.

Chocolatier

Another iconic Aussie brand, this is a late addition to my list (added 5th March). Using the Chocolatier website has been a bit hit and miss – it has an allergen listing for every chocolate and also lists may contains, however after verifying some in person I discovered it wasn’t accurate – for example the honeycomb bunny. I went through the entire Chocolatier Easter range on their website, so you know exactly what you can get, unfortunately only about 5 items out of 28. I’ve since checked

• Extra large milk chocolatier egg, 600g (yes, over half a kilogram!)
• Bikin’ Bunny, 160g (checked in person, safe)
• Puddles The Platypus 190g (checked in person, safe)

• Tub of dark chocolate mini eggs, 1kg (about 135 eggs)
• Tub of milk chocolate mini eggs, 1kg (about 135 eggs)

Darrel Lea

While there are a number of new items out for Easter I haven’t been able to find ingredients listed online for any Darrel Lea products! However, given the statement below I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

Most of our block and chocolate products do not contain gluten. Due to shared equipment with some gluten ingredients, we cannot make a gluten free claim on our products. – Darrel Lea website

Update: I got in touch with Darrel Lea via email and they confirmed what I suspected – all items will have a ‘may contain’ due to wheat at their production site. No gluten free Easter eggs from Darrel Lea.

Ferrero

I’ve now got enough listings that Ferrero and Kinder need their own group.

Free-from eggs (dairy free and gluten free)

For those of us that need Easter eggs that are both dairy free and gluten free I’ve created this sub-group. Most of these will also be vegan! If you’re trying to find the Sweet William brand I’ve seen it available online and in store from David Jones.

Haighs

Haigh’s Easter eggs offerings have finally been released and you’ll be happy to know their website has a gluten-free filter that actually works. The items listed below all have a gluten free marker on the website. I will try to get into a Haigh’s store as soon as possible to verify in person but as I’m sure you know the weather in Sydney is a little bit wild right now. 

Regarding gluten free and dairy free – in the dark chocolate range I noticed that while dairy isn’t used there is a may contain for dairy on every item. As such I’ll label what I see that is vegan but I’ll list may contain dairy if applicable.

Milk chocolate

• Duck with mini eggs, 75g
• Chicken with mini eggs, 100g
• Bilby with mini eggs, 110g and 335g
• Hen on Basket with mini eggs, 185g
• Bag of mini eggs, 120g, 350g
• Various sized eggs, 50g, 75g, 100g, 150, 200g, 300g, 600g
• Salted macadamia brittle egg gift box, 190g
• Honeycomb egg gift box, 175g
• Half egg with mini eggs, 170g
• Speckles half egg, 180g
• Half egg with scorched almonds, 375g
• Frog egg gift box in plain or strawberry, 140g

There are numerous soft toys that come with plain eggs mini eggs or a single small egg in milk or dark chocolate (vegan, but may contain milk). Animals include, sheep, cows, ducks, and of course, bilbies.

Dark chocolate

• 70% Dark chocolate bilby, 100g (vegan but may contain milk)

• Half egg with mini eggs, 170g (vegan but may contain milk)

White chocolate and other items

Just the one white chocolate item, a bag of white chocolate mini eggs in a 120g bag.

There’s a few omissions when you use the filter on the Haigh’s website. One I noticed was a lack of peppermint chocolate, which is my favourite. 

Looking at the ingredients for the peppermint-filled dark mini eggs it lists wheat glucose syrup – which is fine for coeliacs (as per Coeliac Australia). The same is true for caramel-filled milk mini eggs. Finally the milk chocolate baby bilby (20g) is missing the gluten free tag but does not contain or may contain any worrisome ingredients.

Koko Black

As a homegrown Aussie brand I’d hoped to include some Koko Black Easter treats in this list, however I haven’t had much luck. I used the gluten ‘friendly’ filter on their website, it gave me a short list of products however when I looked them they have a may contain for gluten. So really it’s a no-go for coeliacs.

Lindt

Many Lindt chocolates are not safe due to the presence of barley malt extract in the ingredients. Please be warned, the gluten-free filter on their website does not work! Nor does their vegan filter, it actually listed milk chocolate! So please do not trust their filters if you are ordering online from Lindt.
However, a few Lindt products are gluten free, here’s what I’ve found so far:

• Gold bunny in dark chocolate (also vegan but has a may contain for milk)

• Gourmet Eggs in hazelnut – note: this amazingly doesn’t have barley malt extract
• Lindt Excellence dark chocolate (70%) egg 95g
• Gold Bunny & Egg Dark Chocolate Gift Box 240g
• White chocolate gold bunny 100g (I’ve seen this for sale at Kmart and Woolworths)
• Strawberries and cream truffles (I’m not sure if these are all year round but I’ll include them anyway!)

Miscellaneous brands

This little list covers some of the smaller batches of gluten-free Easter eggs and no-name or unknown brands in Australia.

• Milk Baci chocolate eggs, 150g (seen in IGA)
• Dark Baci chocolate egg, 252g (seen in IGA)
• Baci Dolce Vita limited edition Dolce & Gabana collaboration (actually labelled gluten free on the back!)
• This little bunny is made in Belgium and is safe to eat (available at Coles).

• Easter Belgian Milk Choc Pops 30g (I think same brand as above)
• Carob Kitchen Banjo The Carob Bunny 100g and Carob Eggs 140g
• Milk chocolate eggs (no brand) with wrappers including Bluey, Peppa Pig, Sponge Bob and Barbie

The full Pana range is available in Target, and I’ve seen the dark egg available at Woolworths.

• Salted Caramel Pana Organic egg, 110g (while this is vegan it lists milk as a ‘may contain’)
• Pana Chocolate Mylk Easter egg, 110g (while this is vegan it lists milk as a ‘may contain’)
• Dark Pana Chocolate Easter egg, 110g (while this is vegan it lists milk as a ‘may contain’)

Pink Lady have a few good gluten-free items for us, with the bibly being a lovely Aussie item. Do make sure you buy the 150g size as the smaller one has a may contain.

• Pink Lady Milk Chocolate Wombat, 100g
• Milk Chocolate Pink Lady Mini Eggs in Cylinder, 500g
• Pink Lady Milk Chocolate Bilby 150g (note: only the 150g bilby is gluten-free, the smaller size (60g) has a may contain for wheat)

While checking out the Big W website I came across two really cute kids sets. The website shows the allergens under ‘warning label’ on the product which is really useful.

• Barbie Chocolate Castle 180g (allergens listed as milk and soy)
• Disney Melamine Breakfast Set with Milk Chocolate Egg 40g (I haven’t seen this in store but the website lists the following: Contains soy and milk. May contain peanuts or other tree nuts)

• Hot Wheels hollow chocolate fire truck 200g (spotted online at Target)
• Scorched Peanut Egg, by Cook’s Confectionary scorched peanuts encased in smooth toffee covered in milk chocolate. I bought myself a little 50g egg but I’ve seen a boxed 185g one on Facebook (Thanks D!)

Nestle

I have three words for you: Kit-Kat Easter Bunny. Yes, you read right, there is a gluten-free Kit-Kat bunny available. However, it comes with a massive caveat – only one of the four products in Australia is gluten free. This is completely different to the UK / Europe where all of the bunnies are gluten free.

• Kit Kat Chocolate Mini Pouch Bunny Share Pack 66g

This requires a bit more information – looking at the packet this set is made in Italy. In Europe all of the Kit-Kat bunnies (all sizes) are gluten free. I think because they have imported this size it is safe, whereas all other sizes were made in Australia using the Australian recipe.

Not gluten free

• Nestle Milkybar items (may contain wheat)
• Every other Kit-Kat bunny (contains wheat)
• Violet Crumble Bunny 35g (may contain wheat – careful the allergens aren’t listed on the Coles site!)

Park Avenue

Okay, you might be thinking whaaaaat is this brand I’ve never heard of – me too. It’s sold at Kmart and covers a range of kid friendly products with various toy and TV show themes. Please note, I’ve only seen these online but the allergen details include both contain and may contains so I’m confident they are safe for little ones.

• Milk chocolate egg with popping candy 40g (Barbie, Paw Patrol, Baby Shark, Hot Wheels)
• Hot Wheels Digital Watch with Milk Chocolate Eggs 51g
• Barbie Dreamtopia Digital Watch with Milk Chocolate Eggs 51g
• Belgian Milk Chocolate Treats 50g (Paw Patrol and My Little Pony)
• Happy Hot Chocolate Easter Melt 45g

Red Tulip

I love that Red Tulip is still around, I definitely remember them from my childhood. These little eggs with the red band around them are perfect for an Easter egg hunt. Gluten-free eggs and bunnies include:

• Easter Hollow Egg 50g
• Mixed Eggs 916g (wheat glucose syrup is coeliac-safe)
• Easter Rabbit 110g
• Elegant Rabbit 200g
