How do you Stealth kill in Assassins Creed?

At the beginning where you sneak in the shrubs to save the merchant. I can only whistle and then I get spotted when the guard gets too close. No action cues for stealth kill or anything.

You can "kill" when you see a white aura (the one that appears when you target something).

When you are on a corner, whistle and wait for the enemy to come.
You will se they glow white briefly: that's when you press X to eliminate him.
If you pay attention, the context on X button will say "Assassinate" or something like that.

Walk up behind someone and use the hidden blade. Or you can walk up right in front of them and do it, as long as you don't enter High Profile to do it. Just walk away as they fall to the ground.

DO NOT HOLD ANY BUTTON. High Profile is when holding the triggers. Low profile, you can just walk (not pressing any buttons, just pushing the movement stick towards the enemy, then when you are within arms reach, press X, nothing else, and provided you are facing the target and nobody is in your way, you will be rewarded with a nice prison shank.

iv seen people talk about assasination from above, how do i do this? it would have been extremely helpful in some instances. any advice is appreciated.

Assassination from above is relatively simple, though it doesn't always work. Basically, you can do an Assassination from Above from any distance that you wouldn't take damage from falling from.

There are really two ways of doing this, 1.) Jumping off of a roof, or 2.) Climbing down and dropping off a wall.

Either way, just be relatively close to the target, (if you're dropping off a wall, be pretty close to straight above the target) and you should be able to drop down and kill the target. Jumping off isn't quite as sensitive as dropping off. Just be running in the direction of your target, then, if the target is close enough to the building you're on, hit the attack button when you're at the edge of the roof and Altair should leap off and kill. Alternatively, you can leap from a higher roof to assassinate a target on a lower roof by sprinting off the edge of the roof and hitting the attack button in midair.

I've tried this a few times and only managed to pull it off once or twice.
To clarify: do you you have to press the "X" (attack) button instead of the "A" (legs/jump) button when at the edge of the building?
-Also, do you have to have target lock or just be pointed in the general direction?

Assassination from above are badly implemented, IMO. Also note that a THROWING KNIFE is a very good stealth kill as long as nobody see you (so, its best to do it from rooftop with all guards on rooftops already dead if there was any).

Last time I tried assassinating from above, I aimed at the target but landed on a civilian instead...I was not happy...it was rather cool looking though, I just wished I had landed on my target instead...
