Pretty much what the title says. Shot will be around 6 yards. Caliber would prefer to be .177

What FPS will I need? Also what type/weight of pellet do you recommend?

I've taken out woodchucks with both a .177 @ 1000 fps and a .22 air rifle @ 920 fps.  I'm not sure I would trust either though on a coon.

Edit - Even with a head shot they weren't clean kills. I think a .22 long rifle would be the better choice.

Suppressed 22lr would be best, especially since a follow up shot would be fast.
22 pellet at 900fps+ would be second best, aim for the head.

Killing a raccoon with a pellet gun...good luck with that.

I've killed enough of them to know they don't die easily even with a 22 rimfire to the head..

Those bastards are tougher than you think, I've shot one with a .45 ACP FMJ that just waddled off in the woods and died later. I usually dispatch them with a 30-30. But then I don't live where I can't burn powder.

22 CB short and long barreled 22 rifle (preferably single shot) . The shot will be about as loud as a magnum pellet rifle and if you hit the raccoon just right, it should take care of business.

I have an original Beeman model 60 that shoots an 8 grain pellet about 1300 fps. break barrel type.

I shot a raccoon 3 times at about 10 feet in a tree right in the chest area and it was leaking pretty good as it fled down the tree and ran past me to the fence and up and over it went.

Next time I'll use an arrow.......

One Thanksgiving  at my girlfriends house a rabbid  racoon  showed up.  I volunteered my services  but no they called the State police.  Out comes a rookie female  state cop   Shoots the criter nine times and he is just as happy as when he got there. One of the neighbors finished it off with a 2x4.  I hear there is still a drawing on the wall in the local barrachs with a picture of a racoon  holding hands up as to serender  LoL

There's a couple around my yard, they have attacked my cat and hurt him enough to have to take him to the vet.

I don't normally care about wild animals in the yard, but the cat comes first.

I will look into trapping as kmart and sports authority in my town have very little to offer in pellet guns

Quite a bit smaller than a coon I would say.  The woodchucks are maybe a little bigger than a  house cat.

A base model (cross)bow and broadhead arrow tip can be had for pretty cheap. Should do the job easily. There's always a chance it could run off with the arrow sticking out it's side so make sure it doesn't have anything leading back to you on it!

1,000 FPS at point blank range is not enough probably 80% of the time using Gamo Rocket 9.6 grain pellets.  Which is to reiterate that a pellet gun is unlikely to do the job unless you trap them first and use a few shots.

Having hunted with air rifles for over 30 years, I can say that no air rifle is adequate for Raccoon except the big bore PCP guns like the Quackenbush guns or the large bore Korean units, .25 caliber or larger.  At 7 yards the last thing you want is a pissed off wounded Raccoon.

Shot one in the neck that ended up breaking the spine with a .22. It didn't die instantly. No way I would try with a .177 airgun.

I'll second this. A raccoon was raiding our trashcans when I was a kid and my dad told me to grab the marlin 22 and nail that son of a bitch.

Waited on the roof of the house overlooking the cans. It came out, and 1st shot hit it right below the neck (pretty sure it hit the spine). It thrashed about until I gave it 4-5 more shots (I was 12 and excited, so give me a break).

Since it was the only tool available, I had to use a .177 air rifle on a rabid coon once.

The coon took 4 shots to the head from 5 feet away.  3rd one finally anchored it, 4th stopped the twitching.  Wasn't the ideal solution obviously, but that coon had already lost its mind, as it was just sitting there pounding its head into the ground when I got there.

Please follow your own advice, video tape it, and post the ensuring disaster on YOU TUBE, then enjoy the sutures and rabies shots that this advice will not doubt incur. To repeat myself, I have hunted small and medium game with air rifles for over 30 years. I have killed many Raccoons, and there are NO manual pneumatic (Sheridan Silver Streak or Benjamin 342, for example) or Springers that are up to this level of game, no matter what mods you do to the rifle or pellet type used. PCP guns are the only air weapons up to this level of game. As hunters we should all agree the goal is to quickly dispatch our game, not to cause needless suffering. If you don't have a big bore PCP airgun DO NOT attempt to shoot raccoons. I have found good luck with the Sam Yang's in 9MM (my personal choice, well over 100 FPE), .45, and .50. If you are one of the fortunate few who have a Quackenbush big bore of any caliber you are VERY well equipped for this type of game.

Dude, you could bring 4 friends and that raccoon would still have you outmanned.

And are you really going to use a single-shot pellet gun?  I can just picture you with a break-open pellet gun, fumbling around with a pellet, trying to get it loaded for a second shot, as that hissing coon launches himself straight at your nuts.

I was with a group of hikers when we found a coon which had its lower half smashed flat by a car.

It was in unimaginable suffering and one of our camp leaders decided to put it down.

800fps crossman with .177 cal pellets, it took SIX shots through the eye and still wasn't dead.

He ended up bashing its head in with a brick, the whole thing took almost a full two minutes and it was awful to watch (I was young, maybe 12).

My point is that .177 won't do it, you will need a bigger projectile with better penetration.

An air rifle capable of taking out a raccoon will be pretty loud. As was mentioned above, use CB caps out of a 22 rifle. It will be much quieter, and more effective. Aim just behind the ear from the back, or through an eye from the front. Expect to have to take more than one shot; those are some tough critters.

How much $$$ do you want to spend.

There are some pre-charged-pneumatic air rifles in the 9mm, and up to 50 caliber range.

Big enough for deer hunting.  But not cheap.

I'd love to have one myself, but are out of my price range.

I'd NEVER consider a .177 pellet gun.  You can't push a pellet fast enough.

A Crossman Air Pistol using .177 BBs at less than one foot is inneffective against a Possum, even when shot repeatedly in the head.

You might step up to a proper pellet rifle in .22 for Racoon.

On the land I work on I usually have to shoot 4-5 skunks and 2-3 racoon's a year when they hang to close to the house.I used to use a 10-22 with mini mags which worked great for skunks but the 'coons move a hell of a lot faster and seem way tougher than skunks.I find that a 12ga shotgun with #4 buck works best on racoons, they certainly don't run off after being hit.

How do you kill racoons fast?

You can use a lethal body-grip trap that will snap its neck, or you can shoot it. NEVER EVER attempt to poison a raccoon - I know from experience that it either won't work, or you'll wind up with bigger problems on your hands. If you've caught the animal in a cage trap and want to euthanize it, a CO2 chamber is best.

Can I outrun a raccoon?

Raccoon. Raccoons can run up to 9.9-15 mph so YES, humans can outrun a raccoon.
