How many more episodes will Rick and Morty Season 5 have?

Remember when we were forced to wait two long years for Rick and Morty to return after season three? The drought drove some of the fanbase to some pretty dark depths but thankfully, we won't have to wait as long for the next chapter.

When Adult Swim first announced that season four was happening, it also confirmed that 70 more episodes were on their way. It really doesn't get more schwifty than that.

Although the next season isn't quite ready to go yet, we actually know a lot more about it than you might expect, so prepare yourselves and squanch up as we step through a portal and reveal everything you need to know about Rick and Morty season five.

Rick and Morty season 5 release date: When will it arrive?

A new trailer for the fifth season of the show aired on E4 on March 30, confirming it will hit screens in June.

As for US fans, you can catch it on Adult Swim on June 20.

Rick and Morty season 5 cast: Who's coming back?

The regular voice cast are all set to return in season five.

This means that creator Justin Roiland will have his hands full again, voicing the titular characters Rick and Morty. Sarah Chalke from Scrubs will play Beth (or Beth's clone), Chris Parnell will tackle Jerry, and Spencer Grammer will round out the Smith family in the role of Summer.

"I like where Summer's character is going," Grammer told Syfy Wire. "I'm excited to see her do more independent stuff. Maybe be in charge of some things moving forward. And then at some point, maybe she could retire. That would be fun, she just chills out for a minute. She gets to be a normal teenager for a second. That'd be nice."

Roiland will probably voice Mr Poopybutthole again as well, lending credence to the idea that our little yellow friend may actually be a Morty from another dimension. Ooh wee, indeed.

Rick and Morty season 5 plot: What will it be about?

Well, first of all, you need to read our review of episode one, which contains some light spoilers along with positive notes about season five's direction so far. Check it out right here.

Looking ahead, writer Scott Marder teased that fans will get some "epic canon" in the upcoming episodes: "Fans are gonna like get knocked over by the canon we're about to hit them with... All the stuff we're doing is so awesome."

Chalke's comments (via Syfy Wire) will also get you pumped for what's to come: "It takes all things Rick and Morty up a notch to the next level. We get more family adventures all together and the animation is off the hook."

Rick and Morty Season 4 Premiere, Mike Mendel

Without breaking the time travel rule that Rick himself may have broken in season four, it's hard to say exactly what will happen in season five just yet. However, it's safe to say that the 'Interdimensional Cable' format will probably make a return sometime soon, and then there's the story of Evil Morty to consider as well.

Back in May 2019, Harmon hinted at some potential season five ideas on social media with the following caption: "The amount of season five ideas Rob Schrab can come up with in a day is just awe inspiring from a certain distance at which I should have stayed."

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Here are just a few of the potential stories Harmon touched upon in his post:

  • Jerry gets a pinecone in his butt
  • Bark-nado
  • The people’s (basketball) court
  • Morty buys a boat
  • Jerry makes a log cabin w/ hair
  • Artificial person w/ real leg
  • Planet powered by chips + salsa
  • Anal beads
  • When-wolf

While the writers were probably just having a laugh with most of these, we would pay good money to see Bark-nado and When-wolf fight to the death in season five.

In the season four finale, there was also a Mrs Sanchez Easter egg.

Rick pulled up Beth's memories on a large screen, including one which showed her mother when Beth was a baby. It was brief, but it suggested that the mystery surrounding her ma isn't over just yet.

And you can expect the relationship between Rick and Jerry to be explored further.

"I think that if Grandpa Munster continues to just shit on Herman Munster, that's a Flanderization of the father and son-in-law relationship..." Harmon said (via SyFy).

"These guys are obviously not murdering each for a reason. Rick can't be that empowered a character and constantly say that Jerry is completely dismissible and should be erased without us eventually going, 'There's something wrong him because he hasn't 'solved' that problem yet.

"I like the milestones like 'The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy' [because] as with any son-in-law relationship, it's gonna be rooted in alienation and then all the more profound as some version of a friendship is formed."

Discussing Space Beth's season five role at PaleyFest NY, Harmon admitted (via ComicBook): "You know as much as Rick knows."

"I don't want to keep secrets with the audience. She's Schrodinger's Beth right now. The fact she may or may not be a clone is actually the important thing."

"It's the profound revelation about Rick's commitment to non-commitment and how abusive that can be as a parent," he said.

"That is the important thing here. We're adding aunts to the family. We're having fun looking at more options with Space Beth."

He added: "There's pretty groovy things coming regarding Beth... Space Beth was not a one-off character. That's a thing that could have been the case."

And let's just hope Harmon doesn't get confused when finishing season five's plot – as he's working on season six at the same time.

"Immediately after this panel, I'll be going and reviewing an animatic for a late season five episode," he said.

"And yet, we are very late [in the process of] writing season six. I'm looking at finales for both seasons and then also refining the finale of one and then the premiere of the other. So I can't remember the differences."

Rick and Morty season 5 trailer: When will we see it?

Right now! Watch it below.

During Comic-Con@Home, we were treated to an animatic of a scene from season five.

Rick and Morty narrowly escaped a big alien monster, but their ship was damaged as a result and it looked like the end was nigh.

Morty then decided to call Jessica to tell her how he felt, and she let him know that she felt exactly the same way, spurring him on to live another day and safely crash land the ship into the sea.

We were also introduced to Mr Nimbus, Rick's supposed 'nemesis'.
