How much to replace transmission on na miata

I would appreciate it if any of you who has had a shop swap a stock transmission onto your miata can tell me how much it cost you just the labor so i know a range to look for in my area. My 92 miata has been having grinding problem when i shift to the 4th gear and sometimes it gets spit out to N. My third gear is also very notchy at times. I searched and found that rebuilding will cost more than replacing with good one from junkyard, so i figured this is the way to go. Thanks In Advance!!!

I haven't had a shop do that work but seeing that you haven't had a reply just yet I'll give you my guestimate,... probably 6 shop hours plus the cost of the transmission. Seeing that low mileage trannies are about $300-$500 (I've even seem 'em lower), I'd figure $75/hr for shop labor at 6 hours so $450 labor (even though a good shop would probably drop a transmission and install a new one in <3 hours).

Why dont you do the swap yourself? Its straight foreword and fairly simple, just a little heavy

This may sound really dumb, but did you check your gearbox fluid? Generally, if you shift your car into gear it shouldn't spit back out unless you're REALLY missing teeth on the cogs and even then... Any slippage?

Thanks guys! As much as i want to do it myself, i am not confident enough. Also i dont have any big tools. Are there any technical instructions i can look at to see if i am up to it?

Replace the clutch at the same time. Have the flywheel resurfaced too. The whole thing should be done in a day. Japanese clutches on EBAY for $100. $50 or so to resurface flywheel. $300 or less for labor at independent shop.

I'm getting ready to have clutch done and those are prices my mechanic in LA is talking about.

Wondering what causing spit out to N. I have the same problem ocassionally when shifting to 5th gear. Worn out bushing attaching on shifter lower tail part has been taken out. Is it the reason to cause this symptom? My mealage is 85XXX, not sure if my clutch is OEM or not. Will throwing new clutch set cure this problem?

smoking, i dont think clutch is the problem. I can feel that my clutch is still strong. Its just the grinding pushed it out and i dont know the technicals behind this (auto novice here

What about swapping with Protege 2.0's 5-speed transmission? Are they interchangeable? Thank you.

I don't believe they are as this is a RWD application. Some of the mazda trucks have similar cases. Randy's drivetrain interchange page and associated links discusses.

4-5 hours labor at a good shop is a good budget. Some may say 6. Over 6 and its a rip off, IMHO.

I have R&R'd about 5 transmission jobs (3 this year, not my car

IF you are on your OEM clutch, I would swap the clutch, PP, and both bearings while I was in there.

eh, whats a PP and where do these bearings go???

PP= Pressure plate, bearing is Throwout bearing.
All part of clutch assembly. Some people also replace input shaft bearing and seal (while you're at it).
