How reliable is a Chevy Lumina?

2000 Chevrolet Lumina 3.1L from North America

Summary:

Economical family car

Faults:

Engine rebuilt under warranty to correct piston slap at 36,000 miles. Dealer stated normal for car with that many miles.

Windshield wipers repaired three times in first 6 months under warranty.

General Comments:

Excellent mileage for a car of its size still getting approximately 25-27 mpg in town. It has gotten as high as 34 mpg on highway.

Original tires lasted over 70,000 miles.

Front brakes replaced at 60,000 miles, ready for third set already; seems to not be using the rear brakes.

The 3.1L is underpowered, It has always accelerated like it's pulling a trailer; GM should have used the same motor as in the Monte Carlo.

2000 Chevrolet Lumina LX 3.1 from North America

Summary:

A nice comfortable, reliable, economical car

Faults:

The trip meter, doesn't measure mileage correctly, about (.6) miles per every 1 mile on the odometer.

I have had nothing else go wrong with the car yet, it has been a very comfortable reliable economical vehicle.

General Comments:

I driven the car about 5000 miles since I've owned it, and averaged about 31.4mpg combined city and highway driving.

The engine is so quiet, that the heater fan on speed 2, will keep me from hearing it while it's running.

For about $200.00 KYB shocks improve the ride considerably.

It has factory anti-theft, key-less door and trunk; power windows and mirrors.

I'm very happy with the overall value.

  • We purchased the LTZ model. And within one week the left from tie rod assembly had to be replaced. Within one year the water a piece of the cooling system required replacing. With six years the radiator required replacing. A manufacturer recall again the cooling system. Ten years complete over- haul of the cooling system. Within 12 years right front tie-rod required replacement. The actual miles when purchased was 78,009. As of 2021 repair costs exceeded the purchase price of the car. True it has less than the annual standard yearly mileage 138.090. Most if not all repairs were above and standard vehicle maintenance. Buyer beware.

  • Bought car in 2015 with only 68k original miles. Automatic, power steering/doors, and a/c. Solid 6cyl 3.1engine although is noisy at startup until warms up. Found out is normal for this motor. Comfortable car and good on gas. Smooth on highway. One problem area is the 3.1 engine lower intake manifold gasgets, they tend to wear out quickly. Had mine changed and used stronger gaskets..problem gone. Original stereo not bad, decent sound. Nice cloth interior, not fancy, but looks good. Overall, good transportation car that is dependable.

  • The car is in great shape, well taken care of. Low mileage, great driving!

  • Ive had this car since 2010, I bought it with 38,000 miles on it - almost brand newish. As of now it has 92,400 miles and shes running great still, minor problems like the alternator, but in a 20 year old car, some things will go. But my baby runs great and never fails me. Oh and since I received the car in 2010, its been running on the same battery for over 5 years!!!! Thats right, over 5.

  • When I received the car a few months ago, it had great millage, it has great get up and go and it is great on gas. It used to be a security car at UNT. since I got it, I had to replace the starter and seal a leak in the transmission line. Now it is leaking power steering fluid and its going run from $200-$500 to fix. Thats a whole lot of money when your a broke college kid.

  • My family has owned this car since 2001 with 15,000 miles on it. We now have 190,000 miles on it. Still runs great. All we do it give it regular maintenance (oil changed every 3 and tires rotated and such). Its a fairly comfortable cruiser and has a basic but durable interior. The cloth seats still hold up well. It has a responsive engine/transmission and has no issue passing cars on 2 lane roads. (I last clocked a 0-60 run at 7 seconds flat). Gets about 25 on average with a 50/50 highway/city. Its not taxing to drive and has some decent driver feedback through the steering wheel. Handles winter fairly well to with stock tires. The family hope to get another 100,000+ miles out of it at least

  • What can I say? This car started right up after a 5 minute charge after Id let it sit for over 9 months with a dead battery and old gasoline. Bought it titleless and the DMVs been totally unhelpful so unfortunately I couldnt drive it that whole time. Here Id been trying to find a cheap battery to replace the one that certainly shouldve been dead, but said "Hey...why not see if it starts?" so I let it charge for maybe 5 minutes and what do you know, that sucker roared to life! I drove this car 2,000 miles from Wisconsin to California and havent had to fix a thing on it. No repairs in the 2 years Ive owned it besides oil and brakes. 10/10 for reliability.

  • After putting about 130K miles on it and reaching over 180,000 on the odometer, I sold the vehicle to my brother in Aug. 2011. Its still running strong (April 2014), with over 200K miles and counting. The Lumina was a reliable daily driver, and not a bad long distance trip vehicle either. Never less than 20MPG on a tank even in the deepest cold Chicago winters typically low 30s pure highway driving. Stovebolt reliable and cheap to fix wear-out parts. Oil usage excellent at about 6K miles per quart. Tough as a tank. Was rear-ended once by a Mustang. Major frontend damage to the Mustang. Replaced the exhaust, bumper cover and shocks on the Lumina. Best Chevy I ever owned.

  • An amazing purchase, got the car not too long ago and ever since has been driving down the road perfectly. Very smooth riding, gear changing and steady braking and acceleration. Everything on the car works except for AC/cool air but since its soon to be winter, shouldnt be too much of a problem at all for some time. The interior I have seen much better on cars but for what it is, its not bad at all. Exterior design I just love. The overall build quality seems to be pretty solid beside a few things I can name like seatbelt buckles can be pretty difficult at times but still usable, just fiddle with them for a few seconds and theyre good to go. Overall a very good car, recommend!

  • I still drive my 1997 Lumina and it has 260,000 miles on it. It has been the best car I have ever driven. I have never had any major issues with the car. Car maintenance is key. It is a comfortable ride, still has great pickup and handles nicely on curves. Its roomy without being an overbearingly large car. Wish they still made them.
