How to update Sea of Thieves on PC Xbox

  • I bought SoT on 3/22 for PC, downloaded and have been playing since then. Now I get can't play because of version compatibility and was instructed to download update. Took me a min to even find where and those directions don't apply to me (I don't have a code). So, I go to microsoft store and it says I own the game. I click Play on your PC and the microsoft store pops up with a white screen and nothing else.

This is dumb. Either put in an auto update or an actual site for a download file. I will continue to look for a solution and will update here if I find one.

Edit: Yep, I have since figured it out. Go to MS Store and do updates. Originally, the MS store was bugged and only showed me a white screen, but it works fine now.

  • Go to Microsoft store. Search Sea of Thieves. Click on Sea of Thieves and it should open the update and auto start the download.

Did you read what I wrote. Microsoft Store just gives me a white screen. I would show a screen shot but it's just a white screen.

Update: Clicking the microsoft store enough times and clicking Play Game enough times apparently updated the game. I'm now able to play. I assume the white screen was the game updating, just with no indications.

  • If you tell it to play the game in the MS store it gives me the white screen too. I should have been more specific, if I go to my programs and click on the MS store and search fo SoT, it will work like I said. If you go through the Internet you will get the white screen. I have no idea why it does that.

How do I update for my PC?

strangest thing in world to see for a windows 10 only game on pc and console and updates are sent like so
    skip to 1:32
    the pan cakes are updates

  • go to the microsoft store and update it from there, it's weird

  • @aliasmask Go to the MS Store on your PC. In the upper right hand corner you should see the ellipsis ... (the three horizontal dots for those who would rather not google the definition :) Click on that and choose Downloads and Updates from the drop-down.

    G$

  • @G-MONEYBOY This was very helpful and I was able to update it from your instructions, thanks :)

  • As already mentioned, I had to do this manually. I opened Microsoft Store, then clicked the "..." in the upper right hand corner. I clicked "Downloads and updates." Then I had to click the "Get updates" box (white text on blue background) in the upper right corner. This started the download. Nothing else worked for me, as it wouldn't start automatically.

I didn't have the Get Updates option myself this morning. Only thing I didn't try was reboot, because I had to head into work. Hopefully it works itself out before I get home, but I suspect this might be the case for others, as well.

  • Really wish they would sort out the automatic updates for the PC version. It's the only Windows Store/Xbox Play Anywhere game I have that doesn't auto-update properly.

  • @genuine-heather This worked. Thanks.

  • So I have bought the game on Xbox but play with Crossplay on PC. When I load on PC it says to check for an update but checking the MS store didnt help. My wife loaded it on Xbox and it's updating. Will that just cross over or something? is that whats going on here?

    Steps 1 & 2
    Open the Microsoft store app.
Click the "..." menu beside your profile.
It may not display the first time so close and reopen the app until it does.

    Step 3
Click on the "Downloads and updates" menu item.

    Step 4
If "Sea of Thieves" is not listed as being updated on today's date then...
    Click the "Get updates" button.

    Good luck. :o)

I think maybe two PC updates worked automatically for SoT. The rest had to be done manually.

  • @scare-kr0w-91 also make sure you are signed into the Microsoft Store with the correct Gamertag/Microsoft account.

If you are trying to play on Xbox and PC at the same time you need to make sure you are signed out of the Xbox before signing into the PC game. (signing into the Xbox with a different account isn't the same).

Then your wife (or anyone else) can sign into their account on the Xbox.

  • @g-moneyboy Thank you so mutch

  • @aliasmask Dude I done the same thing. Except after downloading the update all it does when I open the game is show me the SOT logo then closes and i'm back at my desktop. W. T. F.
