How to use bagel button on toaster

Unfortunately, the function depends on the manufacturer.

While turning off a set of elements may be common, another option is that the setting may just increase the cook time. Bagels are thicker and have more mass than sliced bread, so a longer toast time is necessary to have a similar level of toasting.

In particular there are Cuisinart toasters where the bagel button only lengthens the time of the toasting and does not change the pattern.

The bagel feature adds extra time to the toasting cycle to allow for thicker breads. You may also use the bagel button for English muffins and other thick breads.

Some toasters have a bagel button and it’s obviously meant for when you want to toast a bagel. But, what does that button actually do?

Firstly, it increases the toasting time since bagels are thicker. Secondly, it increases the heat of the inner elements and decreases the temperature of the outer elements so you don’t burn the outside of the bagel.

It’s also useful for English muffins or other thick items.

How to use bagel button on toaster

It toasts the bagel only from one side. You're supposed to cut the bagel in half first and place the halves in the proper direction.

My toaster has a 'crumpet' button that does this

Mine too. I also use the setting for English Muffins, toasting only the insides.

How would I know which direction considering my toaster does not have an indicator telling me which direction, without using trial and error?

level 2

I don't understand. Why would you want to only toast one side of a bagel?

level 1

Toasts the top of the bag only (just be sure to put bagel in direction of image) because toasting the bottom is pretty pointless.

I want my bottoms toasted...

Why would I want a toasted bag?

While I don't care for half toasted bagels, I find I do often use it to toast hamburger buns (just be sure to keep close watch on them as they tend to have so much sugar in them that once they start to brown they quickly can burn)

Toasters are basic appliances that most people have in their kitchen, but not all toasters are alike. If you noticed a bagel button on your toaster, you might be wondering what it does.

As a general rule, the bagel button on a toaster activates the bagel feature that allows for longer toasting times, increases the temperature on one side of the bagel (the sliced side), and lowers the temperature on the others side of the bagel (the outside). This toasts it just right without making the outside too hot to handle.

Let’s take a look at the three main features of the bagel mode on your toaster.

How to use bagel button on toaster

1. Longer Toasting Time

Bagels and hoagies are much thicker than regular slices of bread, so they need more cooking time while in the toaster. Toasters with bagel settings can cook just a little bit longer than normal. This is necessary because it simply takes longer to cook a bagel compared to regular bread, or even foods such as English muffins and rolls.

2. Increased Temperature on the Inside

The part of your bagel that you really want toasted is the inside—the sliced part. This is the surface that is similar to a slice of bread. Bagel mode increases the temperature of the element facing this surface, to give you that crisp, golden brown finish.

3. Decreased Temperature on the Outside

While we all want our bagel to be nicely toasted where it’s sliced (on the inside), nobody wants the outside of their toasted bagel to be brown or black. For this reason, bagel mode reduces the temperature of the element facing the rounded, outside part of your bagel. This keeps it from burning, and also makes the bagel much easier to handle when you pull it out of the toaster, because the part that rests in your palm is cooler.

Insert Your Bagel The Correct Way

Toasters with bagel settings will typically indicate near the toasting slots which way to insert your bagel. You don’t want to get this wrong, or you’ll have all that extra heat applied to the rounded side of the bagel—the opposite of what you want!

In this image, you can see the bagel indicators circled in yellow:

Pay close attention to which way you insert your bagels, and you should get them toasted just the way you want.

In short, the toaster you’re using works a little differently when you activate the bagel function. The elements on either side of the sliced bagel will toast at different temperatures, and it’s all done so that your bagel turns out just right in the end.

And if your toaster ever breaks down on you, there are ways to toast your bagel without a toaster.

How do you use the bagel button on a Black and Decker toaster?

The bagel function produces a toasted bagel top while warming the bottom. Just make sure the top of the bagel is facing the inside of the toaster. The frozen function defrosts and lightly toasts frozen waffles and breads. There is also a cancel button that will end any function and pop-up whatever you are toasting.

What is a bagel function on toaster?

The bagel setting deactivates or lowers the power on the outer heating elements. This has the effect of toasting the cut surface of the bagel while only warming the outer surface. Generally it's the inner elements that get up to toasting temperature.

What does the bagel button do on a Sunbeam toaster?

Press the bagel button if you are going to toast a bagel. The bagel indicator will light. This option will allow the toaster to adjust the time needed to toast bagels according to the shade level selected.
