The box office has extracted buckets of young adults’ tears this year, and is being made more powerful by the offering, like the emotion-absorbing ooze from Ghostbusters II. Well gird your tear ducts; it’s time for another round. Based on Gayle Forman’s best-selling book, this latest entry is anchored by a typically elegant performance from Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie, Kick-Ass) as shy, cello-worshipping Mia, who finds herself trapped in an out-of-body limbo after a car accident leaves her in a coma.

Natalia is a young Spanish woman who arrives in Mexico City, invited by Esteban, her boyfriend. However, due to work, he is absent, but his friends, Ana and Sofia, convince Natalia to travel to Valeria's house which is out of town, as a sort of bachelorette party. What starts out as an innocent comedy becomes an unusual and violent drama that questions the nature of power, the animality of our species, and the transposition of gender roles. Gradually, however, the film undergoes a transformation, ending in dark sadism. Artist Artemio Narro has made a number of installations and videos on the subject of violence. His first fiction feature is not only a commentary on the ever-present violence in Mexico, but also on how we see violence. The changing tone of the film and an ingenious turnaround in the battle of the sexes makes this film a confrontational experience.

Natalia is a curious case. She’s awkward and intimidated by the leader of the group Valeria, who has plenty of daddy’s money and power to throw around. But in the presence of other men who slobber over her, she’s confident and even contemptuous of them. Her other friends Ana and Sofia have nothing much going in their lives apart from following Valeria’s lead and enjoying the pleasures that spill over.

So after a night of club hopping, the girls go slumming at a local tavern. A cowboy tries to pick up Natalia and she decides to make out with him on the grounds that her boyfriend hasn’t replied to her calls. The girls then decide to take the guy home and things go crazy from there.

For a couple of days, Natalia had been been trying to find her spot in Valeria’s world. The cowboy provides an excuse for her pretensions to drop away, as the girls bond over the perverse. To them the cowboy is a piece of trash from another world, not worthy of losing anything over. Not even their selfishness.
