“I’m not planning to come back next year.” 

Days of Our Lives fans who are struggling with the fact that the show killed longtime heroine Abigail aren’t alone. In a new interview with Soap Opera Digest, portrayer Marci Miller admits, “I don’t love that they made the choice that they did. She’s a legacy character. She’s been there forever.” In fact, the actress says that she assumed the soap would simply recast the part.

So why, exactly, did things go down the way they did? “I like to do other things,” Miller explained. “I like to dabble in other things like films and play other characters. I’m not really at a point in my life where I’m ready to say, ‘Hey, I’m going to play Abby DiMera for 20 years, and that’s what I’m going to do.'”

For better or worse, doing a soap is a pretty full-time gig, which meant Miller had to pass up on a few opportunities which had come her way. “The show wasn’t doing anything wrong,” she clarifies. “You sign a contract, they buy your time, and that’s the gig.” Eventually, however, she came to realize that a decision had to be made. “That was it. I was like, ‘Okay, I’ve got to go. It’s time to do some other things for a while.”

She’d hoped to perhaps go from a contract player to recurring, but that ultimately did not work out. “We tried to meet in the middle,” she says. “They tried to give me options, but my team and agents didn’t dig it.” Despite everyone’s best efforts, on both sides, things simply didn’t work out.

She wasn’t the only one shocked by the decision to do away with Chad’s wife. “It was an eerie feeling that week,” she says of the days after news of Abigail’s fate came down. “I had multiple people come up to me and say, ‘What are they doing? Why are they killing [Abigail]?’ It felt like somebody was really dying.”

That said, this is Salem, where nearly everyone in town has died at least once, only to resurrect (even without the devil’s help). “They did say that to me as I walked out the door,” says Miller. But would she really return? “We’ll see. It depends on what’s going on in my life. I never say never, but I’m not planning to come back next year.”
