Raw chicken in fridge for 4 days Reddit

If you hadn't bought it when you did, it would have been perfectly fine sitting in the store's refrigeration section and sold by the Best By date. If someone walked in a store to buy it today, it would be perfectly acceptable. So, no difference whether it sat in your fridge until the date or sat in the store's fridge until the date. This is, of course, if your refrigerator is at the proper temp.

Regardless, always do the sniff test and if you are in any doubt at all, don't use it, especially when it comes to chicken. It's not worth getting sick over if it doesn't smell right.

This is coming from someone who refuses to throw out things based on the Best By or Sell By dates.. I take those with a grain of salt since I know they have to err on the side of caution. This is just my opinion. I am no food safety expert.

On Friday around 2pm, I partially dethawed a big hunk of chicken breasts that were frozen together by sticking them in water. I then broke off what I needed for dinner Friday night, and just stuck the rest of them in the fridge (uncovered). It’s currently Sunday night. Are they still fine to cook and eat? Is there a way to tell when chicken has gone bad in the fridge?

And what’s the limit? Like would they still be fine if I waited to cook them for dinner tomorrow afternoon, 3 days after they were placed in the fridge partially dethawed?

When I Googled it, I saw many websites saying 2 days in the fridge is the max amount of time. Right now it’s about 2 days and 5 hours after I stuck them in there. I’m wondering if the 2 days rule is just being extra careful, or if it’s like a firm rule where the chicken would have a high probability of having gone bad at 3 days.

Thanks for any insight!!

EDIT: The chicken was already frozen when I bought it.

Bought the chicken yesterday (Saturday) morning. It's been in the fridge since then. Will it still be okay to bake tomorrow (Monday)?

As long as it is refrigerated you will be just fine to cook it Monday. Tuesday as well. I would say Wednesday at the latest though.

Chicken usually gets a funky (rotten garbage) smell to it when it starts going bad

This. When it starts to go bad, you'll know.

You generally want to cook or freeze it it within 2 or 3 days. But if it's been wrapped in plastic and kept in the refrigerator, it won't kill you (or even make you sick) if you go a day or two longer.

While we're on the topic what about cooked chicken?

level 1

1-2 days only from fully thawed.

My brother has two raw chicken breasts he bought about 1-2 weeks ago at the grocery store and has kept stored in our fridge since then. The sell by date was 8/4 (6 days ago). He wants to cook & eat the chicken for dinner tonight, i told him it’s not safe to eat raw chicken that’s been left in the fridge more than 2 days per the USDA. Source: https://www.foodsafety.gov/food-safety-charts/cold-food-storage-charts i usually freeze my meats soon after purchasing for this reason.

My brother says it doesn’t matter since the chicken looks ok and he’ll cook the meat all the way through. I told him he should’ve frozen the meat a day or two after he bought it if he wanted to save it for more than a week after purchasing it. Now he’s insisting I’m the crazy one and that it’s fine to cook raw chicken that’s a couple days past it’s sell by date, even if it’s only been stored in the fridge, not the freezer.

So am I crazy or is he asking for food poisoning?

So, i bought a 500g chicken breast and put it in the refrigerator when i got home, hoping i could cook it the next day.

But i ended up having an impromptu event the next day so i left it there. For another day (which i searched up and is fine to do).

The next day i had this idea to make a chicken parmesane, so i marinated the chicken with spices (but it includes garlic powder which i put a lot in.), i was planning on cooking it the next day (which is today) but it’s father’s day (which i stupidly forgot) and ended up not being able to cook it bc i need to be with family.

Tomorrow, the chicken will already be in the refrigerator for 4 days, 2 days raw(un-marinated) 2 days marinated.

I search up on google and it said that raw chicken can only be in refrigerator for 2 day, and marinated chicken for 2 days. But i overall had put the chicken in the fridge for 4 days. I had just immediately put the marinated chicken in the freezer to stop the marinating process (which had already been more than 24 hours now.)

I’m scared i would food poison my little family bc i put the chicken in the refrigerator for too long. The chicken still smells okay, i mean there’s no foul smell, but i’m not sure bc it’s masked with the garlic smell. And i can’t see the color of the meat anymore bc it’s coated in ted paprika powder. From my view the chicken is still okay. But i’m not too much of an expert at storing raw meat or seeing if the meat is spoiled or not.

Fyi, I wrap the meat in a plastic (new, clean), and used a plastic bag which i can tie to double wrap it. Tied it up nice and tight and put it on the top part of the fridge. Hope i can find answer here. Thanks.
