Is it healthy to not shave pubic hair?

Over the past several decades, smooth, bare skin has become mainstream for millions of people, regardless of their gender. Many enjoy shaved skin, compared to when the hair is left to grow out naturally.

Because of this, it’s become routine for some women to shave or wax their skin. Many times this results in the complete removal of their pubic hair. However, it’s a good idea to understand the benefits of keeping your pubic hair, especially as it pertains to your health. That’s why the experts at Avant Gynecology are giving you all the details on this hairy subject!

Your Pubic Hair Serves a Purpose

Here are some of the reason you might consider keeping your pubic hair:

  • It provides protection against friction that can cause skin irritation in this sensitive area.
  • It helps reduce the amount of sweat produced around the vagina.
  • It helps block your vagina from the following bacteria and infections:
    • Sexually transmitted infections.
    • Urinary tract infections.
    • Yeast infections.
  • It helps regulate body temperature.
  • It is NOT more hygienic to remove pubic hair.

Keep this information in mind the next time you feel the need to reach for your razor! Your pubic hair serves an important purpose. That being said, the decisions around your body hair are totally up to you. If you do decide to remove your pubic hair, that’s ok too. Just be sure that you use a clean razor, replace dull blades, and keep an eye on any cuts, bumps, or inflammation. When in doubt, always remember you can ask your general practitioner or gynecologist for guidance.

When it comes to getting rid of the pubic hair around the vagina, shaving is known as the go-to method for most individuals. But let’s be honest, your pubic hair is there for a reason. It protects you from infections and there is no scientific evidence to suggest that you must get rid of it.

One benefit of shaving the vaginal area is that it allows your flesh to get cool air that can keep it glowing for an extended period. However, Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics says, “It is not at all mandatory to remove pubic hair.”

So is shaving vaginal hair a good idea or not?

Some girls tend to trim their pubic hair or visit a salon for a bikini wax, while some girls may leave their pubic hair alone. But Dr Kapoor says, “There are no such benefits of removing them. But, it’s completely on the person to keep them or remove them. Shaving vaginal hair can cause darkness in the area and even itching due to ingrown hair. Shaving can be risky and cause bleeding too, if not done correctly. Thus, shaving raises the risk of viral infections like herpes, HPV, and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).”

Even though you might not think twice about when you should or should not pull out the razor, it is important to be aware of the times when you seriously should not shave your vagina.

Here’s when you shouldn’t shave down there

Did you know that pubic hair tends to act as a natural barrier to both friction and infections. Well, that’s why they are there to protect. Now read when you shouldn’t shave your vagina according to Dr Kapoor.

1. If there is an infection

Whether is a yeast infection, bacterial vaginitis, or something else, you must avoid shaving down there. Shaving can spread the infection. In fact, you need to notify your doctor about the same.

2. Don’t shave before a sexual activity

If you are planning to get physical with your partner, it is advisable to avoid shaving down there as pubic hair acts as a barrier. That friction after you shave can irritate the skin and lead to ingrown hair. Not only this, but you will also be prone to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

3. In the case of ingrown hair

It is a no-brainer that too much shaving can invite ingrown hair and even skin inflammation. Thus, there are higher chances of infections down there. It is a good idea to take a break from shaving for some time. Resume shaving only after speaking to an expert.

4. If you are on your periods

If you are one of them who wears a pad during periods, you would not want to shave down there. Newly shaved skin is prone to irritation, and constantly using the pad causes friction of the skin. So, there will be rashes, bumps and even one will feel pain down there. Try to wait till the periods get over.

5. Before cycling

Working out is good for your overall well-being. To stay fit, many women opt for cycling. But, freshly shaved skin is exfoliated and sensitive and can become irritated when rubbing on a bike seat. So, avoid shaving down there before a bicycle ride.
