Knock sensor 2 circuit low Bank 2 location

P0332 code definition

If the knock sensor 2 circuit gives a low input signal, the PCM (powertrain control module) record a P0332 code and illuminate the Check Engine Light.

What the P0332 code means

The knock sensor’s purpose is to signal to the PCM when the engine is pinging. If the PCM is receiving a reading from the knock sensor that is too low, it will not be able to accurately send the appropriate signal of a ping, and the PCM will not be able to correct the problem. This can result in higher emissions and other problems for the engine, as well.

What causes the P0332 code?

When a P0332 code is stored, the most common causes are:

  • A faulty knock sensor
  • A fault in the knock sensor circuit or its connectors
  • An air/fuel ratio that’s too lean
  • A problem with the cooling system
  • A defective EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system

What are the symptoms of the P0332 code?

In some rare cases, there will be no other symptom besides the Check Engine light coming on. Most times, though, you will notice one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Pinging in the engine when accelerating
  • Increased engine heat under normal operation
  • Lack or loss of power

How does a mechanic diagnose the P0332 code?

After verifying the code with an OBD-II scanner, the mechanic will then begin with a visual inspection of the sensor and its circuit. They will then likely use an ohmmeter and other diagnostic tools to test the circuit, connectors, and other related components.

After each test and/or repair, they will clear the code from the PCM and retest the system by turning the vehicle on. In some cases, they will take a short or extended test drive to ensure that there is not an intermittent problem that needs to be addressed.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0332 code

The most common mistakes associated with this code have to do with a failure to properly inspect and diagnose the root of the problem. In some cases, a knock sensor will be replaced when the problem was actually with the wiring or connectors. In other cases, the problem could be the cooling system or EGR system, in which case replacing the knock sensor will not do anything to resolve the issue.

How serious is the P0332 code?

Engine pinging can take a serious toll on an engine’s ability to run cleanly and efficiently. If the knock sensor is malfunctioning, the PCM cannot get the proper information from it to predict and correct for the problem. This can lead to an engine that runs rough, overheats, has decreased fuel efficiency, and other problems, as well.

What repairs can fix the P0332 code?

Some of the repairs that most commonly fix a P0332 code are:

  • Replacing frayed or broken wires and connectors in the sensor circuit
  • Ensuring that the sensor and circuit are properly grounded
  • Replacing the knock sensor
  • Addressing the root cause in the EGR or cooling system
  • Replacing or reprogramming the PCM (rare)

Even if you notice no other issues or symptoms with your vehicle, the P0332 code will result in an illuminated Check Engine light. If this light is on when you go in for an OBD-II emissions test, your vehicle will not pass. In most states, and with most vehicles, this means that you will not be able to legally register your vehicle or renew your registration. Getting this issue resolved early can avoid a lot of headaches, as well as more involved and expensive repairs down the road.

P0332

Technical Description

Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Low Input (Bank 2)

What does that mean?

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code, which means that it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles. Although generic, the specific repair steps may vary depending on make/model.

A knock sensor tells the engine computer when one or more of your engine's cylinders are "knocking", that is, exploding the air/fuel mixture in a way that delivers less power and can be damaging to the engine if prolonged.

The computer uses this information to tune the engine so that it doesn't knock. If your knock sensor on Bank #2 is generating a low output voltage (perhaps under 0.5V), then it will trigger a P0332 DTC. This P0332 code may show up intermittently or the Service Engine light may be lit constantly. Other knock sensor related DTC codes include P0325, P0326, P0327, P0328, P0329, P0330, P0331, P0333, and P0334.

Symptoms

You may notice drivability problems including fluctation engine RPM, a loss of power, and perhaps some hesitation. There may also be other symptoms.

Causes

Potential causes for a P0332 DTC include (but are not limited to):

  • The knock sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
  • There is a wiring open/short/fault in the knock sensor circuit
  • The PCM/ECM has failed

Possible Solutions

  • Verify the resistance of the knock sensor (compare it to factory specs)
  • Inspect for broken/frayed wires leading to the sensor
  • Check the wiring and connections leading to/from the knock sensor and PCM/ECM
  • Verify proper voltage is reaching the knock sensor (e.g. 5 volts)
  • Verify proper grounding of sensor and circuit
  • Replace the knock sensor
  • Replace the PCM/ECM

What is a knock sensor 2 circuit Low Bank 2?

An engine code P0332 means that knock sensor #2 is sending an output voltage to the PCM that is lower than the manufacturer-specified range. Without proper readings from the knock sensor, the PCM cannot accurately alter ignition timing to prevent engine knocking.

How do I fix error code P0332?

What repairs can fix the P0332 code?.
Replacing frayed or broken wires and connectors in the sensor circuit..
Ensuring that the sensor and circuit are properly grounded..
Replacing the knock sensor..
Addressing the root cause in the EGR or cooling system..
Replacing or reprogramming the PCM (rare).

Where is the location of knock sensor?

The knock sensor is located on the outside of the engine block. It is intended to record knocking noise in all engine operating states in order to prevent engine damage. The knock sensor "listens out for" the structure-borne vibrations from the engine block and converts these into electrical voltage signals.

What would cause a P0332 code?

When trouble code P0332 is set, the Power Control Module (PCM) has received a reading from knock sensor 2 in Bank 2 that is too low, and it will not be able to accurately send a ping to correct a problem.
