I really respect the decision to not actually SHOW Walker take the serum.
It was the predictable way for the story to develop, and after losing the fight with the Wakadans and his discussion with Llamar at the mall it was clear he was on the path to taking it.
However, not knowing 100% whether or not he had actually taken it and then letting the viewer come to the realization after lingering on the shot of the shield embedded in concrete when Walker threw it was really effective.
A lesser written show would have made a big deal of showing John actually injecting himself with the serum and making some big melodramatic scene out of it.
The whole episode was well done, but I think that particular decision by the writers was a very good one.

It's interesting the juxtaposition going on in that last scene. Especially calling back to Civil war.
When it came down to it, Steve was defending Bucky and had Tony on the floor mask less. A similar position. He could have killed Tony, but for a few reasons, he didn't. For one they were friends, and two he was well... Steve.
Do we know that if he just saw Bucky die, would Steve had done the same thing out of grief? I don't think he would have, but grief does weird things to people. Though Steve had a Lifetime to learn to control the side effects of the Syrum.
I didn't think it was a "weird heel turn" at all. To be honest, I'm surprised that there were a lot of people who were shocked by what she did in last week's episode. In episode 2, when she was speaking to the other Flagsmashers, she said, "There's no turning back after tomorrow," so obviously they were setting up a big, no-turning-back event.
I still think she, and the Flagsmashers in general, are much more nuanced than Hayward. To be honest, since the beginning, Hayward was your stereotypical "evil government bad guy" character. His "turn" in the final episode doubled down hard (probably too hard) on that trope, but it still affirmed what we knew about him before.
The final image of Walker with blood on the shield was powerful.
On the other hand, I was a little disappointed with how Battlestar was treated. It feels like a regurgitation of the Black Best Friend trope, along with that friend being killed mostly to give Walker motivation.
It might have been a more interesting choice, dramatically speaking, if Walker had given Battlestar the serum in order to save his life ... and then for us to see Lemar have trouble adjusting to the serum over the final episodes.
And maybe even for Lemar to eventually show that he, not Sam or Walker, is worthy of the shield.
