The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on the same-named book by Jenny Han. Like the book, the show is primarily concerned with romance, especially a love triangle between a teen girl and two brothers. Expect lots of talk of boyfriends and girlfriends, flirting, dating, and kissing. Dialogue can sometimes veer toward the frank, like when one girl teasingly calls another a "dirty little slut" for wanting a "hot make-out session." Adults are also involved in romantic complications, with a recently divorced woman meeting someone she becomes interested in. In several scenes, characters smoke pot alone or share a joint; characters also drink at parties, and it's not always clear whether all the drinkers are of legal age. Characters drink too much, slur their words, and act sloppy. Several main characters are of Asian heritage, though that isn't mentioned as frequently as their relatively poor financial status in the wealthy beach town they visit. Cursing includes "f--k," "s--t," and "a--hole." A young girl is at the center of the action; her romantic and sexual maturation reads as realistic and moving instead of exploitative.

Too much swearing, alcohol, drugs, sex for younger teens

The acting is good and the cast is beautiful. The storyline is somewhat predictable. I let my 14 1/2 year old watch this show, as she just finished reading the books. There is a lot of swearing, drugs, and alcohol throughout. This bothered me some but then there is a scene of sex in a car (no nudity, but still not good) that I was not expecting. My daughter said that was not in the book! The drugs and alcohol are somewhat glorified as the series goes on. There are better (cleaner) shows out there for younger teens.

This title has:

Too much sex

Too much swearing

Too much drinking/drugs/smoking

What's the Story?

Every year, THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY's Belly (Lola Tung), her mom Laurel (Jackie Chung), and her brother Steven (Sean Kaufman) go to Cousins, a New England beach town to spend the summer with Laurel's longtime best friend Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) and her two sons: Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Every time, it's a whirl of fun at the beach and at the pool, but this year, as Belly is turning from 15 to 16 and romance enters the picture, things get a lot more complicated. Based on the young adult romance novel of the same name by Jenny Han, who also created and scripted this series.

Is It Any Good?

As sweet, light, and refreshing as a soda on ice by the swimming pool, this book-based drama tackles the confusion and loveliness of an awkward coming-of-age. Last year, Belly had glasses and braids; but as her BFF tells her, she looks "a lot different" this summer with "new boobs" and everything. Boys, and even men, notice her, talk to her; movie night with the moms doesn't feel the same, and neither does hanging out with her family and longtime friends -- one handsome family friend in particular. Wonderfully, terrifyingly, Conrad seems to notice her, too, but what does that mean when he has personal drama of his own, and a girl that he kisses across the fire at the beach party?

Jenny Han's novel of the same name is beloved and bestselling, and here she shows she has a deft touch with spoken dialogue and pacing, too. As personified by Tung, Belly is beguiling and conflicted, on one hand wanting to play like a puppy in the pool with her good old friends, on the other, she's intoxicated by the sudden rush of power she feels. She wants to put on a white dress and please Susannah with a coming-out season at the country club, and to wear something slinky and short that'll make all the boys notice her at the bonfire. It's easy to love her, and painful yet good to watch as she gets what she wants and only then realizes the limitations of real life vs. romantic fantasies. It's enough to make viewers remember their own teenhood in all its embarrassment and glory, equal parts cringe and magic, just like this series.
