When it comes to the debate where one has to decide on the greatest anime franchise of all time, Dragon Ball is definitely a name that comes across the most. The iconic anime has had a host of mangas, original shows, series prequels, and sequels that have made the franchise sort of immortal. While some of it hasn’t really panned out well with the critics, fans of the franchise were actually amused by how good the previous venture, Dragon Ball Super: Broly worked for them. All of which have led to the latest attraction in the series, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

The latest movie inhabits a surprising change in the series’ animation style, with the plot bringing back its focus on Gohan. The hotly anticipated title has anime fans reeling to witness the new adventure in all its glory. Number 26 in the Dragon Ball movie franchise, the events in the film take place just after Broly ended.

After defeating Broly in the previous film, Goku and Vegeta are trying to master the newly acquired skills that they discovered during the Tournament of Power. However, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero places Gohan’s arc at the center stage with his association with former guru Piccolo becoming an important narrative point. Something that the fans have been missing for quite some time now.

Directed by Tetsuro Kodama and a voice cast that includes Masako Nozawa, Toshio, Furukawa, Ryō Horikawa, Yūko Minaguchi & Mayumi Tanaka among others, the film also sees the revival of the Red Ribbon Army.

Currently, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is not streaming anywhere online. Like the other movies of the Dragon Ball Franchise, the film will be having a proper theatrical run before coming online in any format.

Released in Japan on June 11, 2022 (after getting postponed due to a cyberattack at Toei Animation), Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero expands in August with Crunchyroll looking after the distribution outside Japan along with Sony Pictures Entertainment. The film is expected to release in theatres across America on August 19th, 2022, expanding through the month later.

As far as streaming is concerned, there’s a slight chance that it will be available on Crunchyroll (which has now been merged with Funimation) in a few months. There’s no surety to that news, but since the streamer is planning to release its previous theatrical venture Jujutsu Kaisen 0 – The Movie in the same calendar year as its theatrical release, there’s hope still.
