What are the most common Powerball numbers in Australia

While Powerball is a game of chance, and every number has an equal likelihood of being drawn, the experts at The Lott have revealed the most and least frequently drawn numbers ahead of the $100 million jackpot.

From the main barrel, from which seven winning numbers are drawn from 35 balls, the most frequently drawn numbers are 17, 9, 2 and 25.

The least frequently drawn are 33, 31, 34 and 6.

From the separate Powerball barrel, where a single Powerball number is drawn from 20 balls, the most frequently drawn Powerball number is 19, while the least frequently drawn Powerball numbers are 18, 16 and 14.

“Of the Powerball division one winning entries so far this year, about two-thirds have been QuickPick entries, where the lottery terminal randomly chooses the numbers on the ticket,” The Lott spokesperson Matthew Hart told 7NEWS.com.au.

“The remaining winning tickets have been marked entries, where people have deliberately chosen the numbers on their tickets.

“To win Powerball’s division one prize, you need to match all seven winning numbers, drawn from a barrel of 35, and the all-important single Powerball number, drawn from a separate barrel of 20.”

As with any game of luck, Hart says “it doesn’t matter whether you mark your entry or grab a QuickPick” or where you purchase your entry.

“As long as you’ve got a ticket in your hand before the draw’s close, you’re in with a chance to win.”

The luckiest locations have been revealed, with one Australian state taking home more than half of the nation’s division one prizes.

The Australian locations home to the winning entries have been released in the lead-up to the draw, with NSW coming out on top with nine of the 15 Powerball wins this year - a total of $221,084,400.39 in prize money.

“NSW players have had a remarkable year with Powerball,” Hart said.

“Lotteries are games of chance so a win can land anywhere at any time. Only time will tell if that run continues this week.”

Victoria came in second with three wins throughout 2022, with one win each in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

The upcoming jackpot prize is the first time Powerball has offered $100 million this year, after there were no division one winners from the past four Powerball draws.

About half of Australian adults are expected to purchase an entry.

In the lead-up to the big day, the “hottest” picks and postcodes have been revealed.

The luckiest locations

State-by-state, certain postcodes have proved particularly lucky when it comes to producing prosperous picks.

In Victoria, Frankston (3199) sold four division one winning entries.

In New South Wales and the ACT, Port Macquarie (2444) sold three division one winning entries.

In Queensland, Bundaberg and North Bundaberg (4670), sold three division one winning entries, as did Rural View and Slade Point (4740).

In South Australia, Adelaide (5000) also sold three division one winning entries.

In Tasmania, Launceston and Newstead (7250) sold two division one winning entries.

In the Northern Territory, the postcode of Berrimah (0828) delivered the Top End’s biggest division one prize from an in-store ticket.

In Western Australia, Hamilton Hill, Yangebub and Spearwood (6163) sold five division one winning entries.

“Over the course of the year and across all games, we naturally tend to see more division one wins in those states where there are more people and players,” Hart told 7NEWS.com.au.

“In fact, last financial year, Victoria had the most division one wins across all games with 153, while NSW and the ACT were not too far behind with 141.”

What Are The Best Powerball Numbers?

The most frequently drawn numbers from April 19, 2018 to the present are: 17, 11, 2, 22, 20, 25, 27 for the main numbers and 19 or 3 for the Powerball. In the 78 draws since then, the number 17 has been drawn 24 times or 31% of the time.

Powerball Australia Mechanics

The Australia Powerball is a national lottery launched by Tattersall’s, the same company behind other popular lottery games such as Oz Lotto. Players who want to participate have to select seven numbers (from 1 to 35) plus a Powerball number (from 1 to 20).

Prizes are divided into ‘divisions’ based on how many of your chosen numbers match the winning draw. The biggest jackpot, or the Division 1 prize, is given to player/s who have all seven main numbers plus the Powerball. Division 9, the ‘lowest division’, only requires that you match two main numbers and the Powerball.

The minimum jackpot is $AUD 3-million, but the highest jackpot in Australian history was $150-million in September 2019. If there’s no jackpot winner, the Division 1 prize continues to grow until somebody gets the winning combination or the jackpot has ‘rolled over’ 25 times. Numbers are drawn every Thursday evening, and you can check the official Powerball website for the winning combo shortly after.

Unlike American lotteries, no taxes are collected on prize winnings, and winners take home the full amount. More than one person can win in each division; prizes are split evenly between winners.

Best Way To Play Powerball

Since numbers are randomly drawn, there’s no way to tell with 100% certainty which numbers will make up the winning combination. But if you’re familiar with the past winning draws, statistics can be on your side. By knowing the number frequency, for example, you may be able to ‘predict’ the numbers that are most likely to come up in the next draw.

There are many places, both online and in real life, where you can ‘play’ Powerball. Most will offer a ‘Quick Pick’ system which randomly generates a combination of numbers for you, based on your specifications. Some systems ‘guarantee’ the correct Powerball number for a significantly higher buy-in than a regular lottery ticket.

Here are some of the common systems to play Powerball:

  • Oz Lotteries
  • Lotto.net
  • The Lott
  • Powerball.net
  • OneLotto
