My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 23 Review- Plot and Characters

What happens in my hero academia season 5 episode 23

I am scared, disgusted, concerned, and sickened to my core after watching My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 23. I also think that this particular episode was the best episode of My Hero Academia we have seen since All Might vs All for One back in Season 3. My Hero Academia is barely recognisable from the show we saw in Season 1, and we have known this was going to happen since at least Season 2. The sins of the show’s past have now come to sow.

Imagine an entire Dragon Ball Super arc without Goku or Bleach continuing for 18 episodes after Ichigo’s story has concluded. You just can’t because stories like these need a hero to root for and a villain to root against during all times. At least, this is what I first thought before I watched the latest episode of My Hero Academia. My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 23 is among the top 3 episodes of the show without even featuring a hint of the protagonist of the show, Izuku Midoriya.

As its name suggests, the episode was based around the origin story of Tenko Shimura or Tomura Shigaraki as we know him. We have already got a hint from a prior episode, but his situation was bloody and heartbreaking. You get the feeling the All for One lied to young Tenko about what happened, but the reality of the situation was much more than one might anticipate. In fact, this episode was, bar none, the darkest episode of My Hero Academia anyone has ever seen.

There was blood, gore, abuse, and trauma all around as one felt helpless watching as everything unfolded in the episode. There was a district feeling of unease before the episode even started, and that feeling got exacerbated as soon as the episode really started to move at a frantic pace. Before one even felt a minute pass, the episode had already finished and left a feeling of true sadness and revulsion inside people’s minds. If any episode this season can be called a masterpiece, it was this one. I will not be watching it again.

If the animation and music of this episode weren’t up to snuff, I doubt that this episode would have been as effective as it was. The background music was chilling and induced a sense of dread that carried on throughout the whole episode. The animation was solid, and the scenes that included blood were heartwrenching to look at and must have been even harder to animate. Top-notch material, indeed.

I have a tiny issue with the opening to this section of Season 5. Everything will be alright? How about you stop luring us into a false sense of security? The opening music almost convinced me into thinking this would be a normal arc of My Hero. It is not.

Verdict

What happens in my hero academia season 5 episode 23

My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 23 was one of the best episodes of the show I have ever seen. It was horrifying, repulsive, sickening, and traumatising. I still can’t get my head straight after watching it. It was as close to a masterpiece as My Hero Academia has ever been, and if this is in any way indicative of the show’s quality in the future, I think we are in good hands.
