Social position is the position of an individual in a given society and culture. A given position (for example, the occupation of priest) may belong to many individuals. Social position influences social status. Social position can help to identify a person's position within the social hierarchy in a society.

Social position
Social position is the position of an individual in a given society and culture. A given position may belong to many individuals. Social position influences social status. One can have several social positions, but only one social status. Social positions an individual may hold fall into the categories of occupation, profession, family, hobby, among others. An individual is likely to create a personal hierarchy of such positions, where one will be a central position while the rest are peripheral positions. Social positions are visible if they require an individual to wear a uniform or some other kind of identifying mark. Often individual clothes or other attributes will advertise what social position one has at the moment. Non-visible social positions are called hidden. A position that is deemed the most important to given individual is called central, others are peripheral. If a sequence of positions is required to obtain a given position, it can be defined as a career, and change of position in this context is a promotion or demotion.

role, in sociology, the behaviour expected of an individual who occupies a given social position or status. A role is a comprehensive pattern of behaviour that is socially recognized, providing a means of identifying and placing an individual in a society.

What is the position of people?

The position of someone or something is the place where they are in relation to other things.

A person is said to occupy a social position if he has a certain set of obligations and enjoys a certain set of associated rights within a social system. These two parts of social position, we shall call its role and its status, "role" referring to obligations and "status" referring to rights.

Status is our relative social position within a group, while a role is the part our society expects us to play in a given status. For example, a man may have the status of father in his family.
