Which way does a bagel go in a toaster and bagel setting?

Some toasters have a bagel button and it’s obviously meant for when you want to toast a bagel. But, what does that button actually do?

Firstly, it increases the toasting time since bagels are thicker. Secondly, it increases the heat of the inner elements and decreases the temperature of the outer elements so you don’t burn the outside of the bagel.

It’s also useful for English muffins or other thick items.

Which way does a bagel go in a toaster and bagel setting?

level 1

It toasts the bagel only from one side. You're supposed to cut the bagel in half first and place the halves in the proper direction.

level 2

My toaster has a 'crumpet' button that does this

level 2

Mine too. I also use the setting for English Muffins, toasting only the insides.

level 2

How would I know which direction considering my toaster does not have an indicator telling me which direction, without using trial and error?

level 2

I don't understand. Why would you want to only toast one side of a bagel?

level 1

Toasts the top of the bag only (just be sure to put bagel in direction of image) because toasting the bottom is pretty pointless.

level 2

I want my bottoms toasted...

Why would I want a toasted bag?

While I don't care for half toasted bagels, I find I do often use it to toast hamburger buns (just be sure to keep close watch on them as they tend to have so much sugar in them that once they start to brown they quickly can burn)

On the bagel setting it only toasts one side? I used to take this for granted until I purchased a Cuisinart which does not.

Agreed. Wasted time and money researching a good toaster that only toasts one side when bagel setting is selected. It toasts both side equally when on TOAST setting and toasts both side equally when on BAGEL setting. Bagel setting reduces darkness of toast by approximately 1/2 setting. Piece of crap if looking to toast bagels as I was. I have no idea why a bagel setting would toast both sides - pointless and deceptive marketing. Anyone know of a toaster that does a good job of toasting only one side of bagels, English muffins, etc.?

I am looking for a 2-slot bagel toaster that measures 5 1/2- 6 inches on the slot length. What toaster meets this dimension?

That is the proper way for a bagel setting to work, only toasting one side. A heated bagel should have a crisp top and soft, slightly warmed, bottom. If you want both sides toasted, do not use the bagel setting.

For what it's worth, I just bought an inexpensive Hamilton Beach toaster that only toasts one side on the bagel setting. The other coils heat up just a little bit to warm the other side.

I can confirm that my Oster toaster does all four sides when the Bagel light is on. Not that I care, I'm perfectly happy having both sides of the bagel toasted.

According to the reviews, THIS TOASTER toasts a bagel on one side! Thinking of buying this! https://www.amazon.com/Vremi-Toaster-Slice-Stainless-Steel/dp/B01L7DHAEW/ref=sr_1_2?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1502636853&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=toaster&psc=1&smid=A1IT8HK338CJ43

All sides toast equally, just for a bit longer when the bagel setting is pressed. No idea why they even bothered to add it, marketing ploy I guess. Awful toaster either way, avoid it.

Is there a toaster for the kitchen counter that will toast only one side of the bread? I want to put in bread and it pops out/up with one side done.?

All of our Oster Toasters that have the bagel feature do only toast the inside of the food, when this feature is selected.

What setting do you put bagels on?

The “bagel” setting or button on a toaster disables one set of toasting coils such that only one side of the bread (presumably a bagel) is toasted.

Are bagels toasted on both sides?

see less No, it toast on both sides, but it has been my experience that the inside coils gets hotter than the outside coils. I always put a bagel or English muffin with the cut sides facing the middle and they come out great.
