Guide Gotta pay your respects to the OG. Back in the mid-2000s, Rebelde (2004-2006) was the show you rushed home from school for in Mexico. At 3 p.m., you’d tune in to see the latest drama unfold among all the wealthy students at Elite Way School and watch the student body’s crown jewel of a pop group, RBD, perform their hit songs like “Rebelde,” “Sálvame” and “Nuestro Amor.” Well, the alarm has sounded and school is back in session at the heralded Mexico City institution, and the brand new Rebelde is not forgetting its roots. In fact, the reboot pays particular homage to the original series on multiple occasions. Looking back, while moving forward. Below, we give you all the Easter Eggs nodding to the original series, which are sprinkled throughout Rebelde (plus some spoilers from the new and old series): 1. EWS alum Celina Ferrer is the principal.The reigning principal at the revitalized Elite Way School is none other than former student Celina Ferrer, played by Estefanía Villarreal. We learn in Episode 4 that she’s been at the school in a vocational capacity for four years. And freshman Luka Colucci’s father (and domineering school board member) Marcelo Colucci has no scruples about rubbing salt in Celina’s wound of not becoming as successful of a musician as the original members of RBD, her peers back in the day. “If life were fair, you’d be off enjoying the fruits of a successful career, instead of being a glorified babysitter,” Marcelo condescends to her in Episode 8. “But you’re not. You weren’t a part of RBD — not because you lacked talent, but because that’s just life.” Ouch. 2. Pilar Gandía is Jana’s mom.Celina Ferrer isn’t the only alum walking the halls of EWS again. The former principal’s daughter, Pilar Gandía, is back on campus. But this time, it’s to enroll her daughter, Jana, albeit begrudgingly. Pilar has grown up to become a momager that rivals Kris Jenner. If she couldn’t become part of RBD, she could make her daughter a pop star just like them. Karla Cossío reprises the role of Pilar, playing a mom who warns Jana not to turn her back on everything they built. In Episode 3, we are also reminded that Pilar was a member of the Lodge of yesteryear. Which brings us to... 3. The Lodge is BACK.The Lodge was thought to be dead and gone, as there were no hazings at EWS for 18 years... or so Principal Ferrer thought in Episode 2. In the very first scene of Rebelde, we meet the Lodge, a gang of students dressed in letterman jackets and animal masks who have a rollicking good time terrorizing new students. The Lodge used to make the lives of scholarship students miserable for their own gain. Nowadays, not much has changed, as the “costume party” brigade favor the most influential students with swanky last names and pave their way to success — without remorse for who gets stomped on along the way. 4. Same school, new students.At the heart of the show is EWS, which is still “the most renowned boarding school in Latin America.” Students may have shortened the name to EWS now, but it’s the same Elite Way. Students are still flocking to Mexico City from far and wide, like Estebán from Puebla, Emilia from Brazil, Dixon from Colombia, MJ from California and Luka, who has returned to Mexico after an extended stay in Argentina. 5. Mía Colucci is Luka’s cousin.It’s all in the name for Luka, who rides the coattails of his family legacy and wealth — his cousin Mía Colucci was the lead singer of RBD and is a legend at EWS. Luka is now enrolled in the famous Musical Excellence Program (MEP), hoping to follow in Mía’s footsteps and grow into a musician instead of the businessperson his father would prefer. 6. The uniforms are still EVERYTHING.The original Rebelde uniforms launched pop-punk fashion for Mexican teens. They’d promptly ask their parents if they could buy exact replicas of Roberta Pardo’s uniform — red blazer, red tie, denim miniskirt and all. The uniforms were so iconic that the new Rebelde knew exactly what kind of statement the modern outfits needed to make. Season 1 features an entire montage sequence of the new kids on the block ecstatic to try on their uniforms and add their own personal flairs. The updated uniforms offer modern twists on the colors and themes of the originals. The finale ensembles of Sin Nombre (MJ, Dixon, Jana, Estebán, Luka and Andi) add even more sparkle and pizzazz to the everyday school uniforms. 7. There’s a whole display case to RBD’s achievements.Rebelde wouldn’t be Rebelde without RBD, and the new iteration features a display case with all their gold records, props and — you guessed it — uniforms. In Episode 1, Luka tries to mask his admiration by saying that the wall is “tacky,” but Estebán sets him straight by reminding him, “I mean, not just everyone can accomplish what they did. They sold out stadiums and got tons of gold records.” Is he wrong? No, sir. Oh, and remember how on the first night of school, the Lodge terrorize freshmen? Well, they also break into the display case to steal RBD’s old getups. They force the newbies to wear them, tasking Estebán specifically with wearing Roberta’s miniskirt. 8. MJ idolizes Roberta.Throughout the season, pianist and singer MJ keeps referencing how she feels more akin to RBD member Roberta than to lead singer Mía Colucci. She first mentions this during the hazing by the Lodge, when they pass over giving her Roberta’s uniform to wear. The second time is in the finale, when MJ may be forced to leave EWS because of her parents’ disapproval of the school. She steps up to the RBD display case and stands in front of the reflective wall, almost as if she is wearing Roberta’s uniform herself, dreaming of becoming a musical sensation. 9. MJ shows up to school wearing a Mía Colucci star on her forehead.Even though she claims to be a Roberta acolyte, MJ arrives at EWS for orientation wearing a star sticker right in the middle of her forehead, in honor of Mía Colucci’s signature look. Emilia sets her straight pretty quickly, though, removing the sticker and coldly advising “forget about your dream of becoming Mía Colucci. There’s nothing more cringeworthy than a fan.” Suffice to say those stickers stayed buried in MJ’s luggage for the rest of the season. 10. The Lodge makes the freshmen sing RBD’s “Rebelde.”To really wrap the new generation up in the world of Rebelde, the Lodge make the freshies sing the original show’s theme song and RBD’s smash hit “Rebelde.” Jana, MJ, Dixon, Luka, Andi and Estebán are called up, and they all clumsily try to get through it at first. But soon into the song, they find their footing and gel as a band — surprising not just the Lodge but themselves, too. 11. The Lodge calls Jana the “new Mía Colucci.”Jana is the pop star who came to EWS to try her hand at making serious music that wasn’t just produced by her hitmaker father. The Lodge enlist Jana to take the lead vocals on the “Rebelde” number. But despite her pop star background, they say she lacks the talent to really take up the Mía Colucci mantle. 12. Jana wears Mía Colucci’s pink hat from RBD’s “Sálvame” music video.In RBD’s famous “Sálvame” music video, Mía Colucci wears a pink cowgirl hat. So, in order to cruelly label Jana as the second-rate Mía Colucci, the Lodge bestow her with Mía’s cowgirl hat to seal the deal. 13. Luka plays Mía Colucci’s tambourine — also from the “Sálvame” music video.The Lodge continue to pass out Mía Colucci’s memorabilia from the RBD display case, tossing Luka her pink, heart-shaped tambourine to shake during the group’s “Rebelde” performance. Mía Colucci played the instrument in the “Sálvame” music video. 14. The students cover RBD’s songs for an assignment.Classics never go out of style, and Rebelde revamps beloved RBD chart-toppers for a school assignment. For the second round of Battle of the Bands, each group is tasked with creating a music video that is a cover of one of RBD’s hit songs. Sin Nombre are assigned “Sálvame,” Colmena get “Tras de Mí” and XY (Sebas and Emilia) nab “Solo Quédate en Silencio.” A fourth unnamed group are given “Nuestro Amor.” 15. MJ tries to honor the OG “Sálvame” music video.While Sin Nombre brainstorm different camera angles and choreography, MJ has one thing on her mind — going back to basics and paying respect to RBD’s original “Sálvame” music video. She inquires about every member of Sin Nombre wearing swimsuits — in the original, only the girls did. Also, most of RBD wore hats in the video (except Roberta and Lupita), so MJ says Sin Nombre “obviously” needs them, too. And she wonders if it snows in Mexico, as RBD performed the song in the snow. The rest of the group nix all these references in a bid for authenticity, but they can’t blame MJ for trying! 16. The central band of the series name themselves... Rebelde.All season, Sin Nombre stick with their band name, which literally translates to “Without Name.” But by the end, they have to land on something, verdad? Well, indeed they do. In their final Battle of the Bands performance, Jana reintroduces the group as Rebelde — the first song they played together as a group (albeit against their will). It is also the theme song of the original show and the name of this reboot series. And they sing the song one final time before the season comes to a close.
