In any sport, the stars drive the sport and usually, the stars are the best players in the league. Baseball is no different with some of the biggest stars rated among the highest in MLB The Show 22, but also some among the best who some might not see as stars. Below, you will find the list of best players in MLB The Show 22 on overall rating. These ratings are from the live roster on game launch (March 31). Players with the same rating are listed alphabetically. As with any sports game, the rankings are bound to change throughout the season based on individual player performances, injuries, trades, and more. For example, both Ronald Acuña, Jr. and Mike Trout, both of whom appear on this list, had separate injury issues last year. The former was having a fantastic season before suffering a torn ACL. Trout was having a similarly great season before tearing his calf. However, they’re still considered to be among the best in real life and in the game. 1. Ronald Acuña, Jr. (99 OVR)Team: Atlanta In the minors in The Show 22 as he’s recovering from that torn ACL suffered last season, Acuña, Jr. is still one of three players rated 99 on this list. The Atlanta superstar may not have been able to participate in the World Series, but his production during the 2021 season prior to the injury helped Atlanta win the National League East, albeit with the least wins of any division winner – and it didn’t matter! He tore his ACL in July after compiling a line of .283 with 24 home runs, 52 runs batted in (RBI), and 3.6 Wins Above Replacement (WAR). Acuña, Jr. is the rare combination of speed and power that a few players on this list also possess. His Speed is 90 and with the accurate and strong Arm Power (95), he can man even the biggest of outfields with ease while causing baserunners to think twice about taking an extra base or tagging up. His Durability (95) is still high even with the injury because the torn ACL is the only major injury thus far in his young career. 2. Jacob deGrom (99 OVR)Team: New York Mets The highest rated pitcher in the game and thought of as the best pitcher in baseball – when healthy – Jacob deGrom is formidable on the mound, but also at the plate even though he might not hold the two-way status of Shohei Ohtani. His five-pitch repertoire is full of speed and movement. His fastball will routinely hit over 100 mph, the two-seam reaching the upper 90s and possibly 100 mph. His slider, usually a pitch in the 80s, is in the low-to-mid-90s with late break, making you think it’s a fastball until you’re already committed to the swing. He’s nearly unhittable. Of course, the big issue is “when healthy” as news dropped during the week that deGrom would be scratched from his Opening Day start without a clear timetable for his return. deGrom’s 2021 season ended in July after posting a 7-2 record with 1.08 earned run average (ERA) and 146 strikeouts in only 92 innings. At least in The Show 22, you have more control of injuries. 3. Mike Trout (99 OVR)Team: Los Angeles Angels The consensus best player in baseball over the past decade, Mike Trout had his 2021 season cut short just as it looked it might be a battle between teammates for the Most Valuable Player (M.V.P.). Trout was only able to play in 36 games after what was initially thought to be a strained calf was revealed to be a torn calf muscle that he suffered on May 17. Of course he was having another Trout season batting over .330 with 1.8 WAR before his injury. Trout’s Durability (82) is a bit lower because he has battled more nagging injuries in recent seasons until the torn calf muscle in 2021. However, he can hit for contact (91 Right and 85 Left) and power (99 Right and 83 Left) with great Speed (89) and across the board solid defense that can help him hold off the conversations of him moving to right field for at least another season. 4. Max Scherzer (97 OVR)Team: New York Mets The former World Series and Cy Young winner made news in the offseason as he chose to sign with the Mets. If deGrom is healthy, he helps form the best one-two punch in all of baseball. If deGrom remains sidelined, then the Mets can slot in their literal second ace with ease. Scherzer spent 2021 with the Nationals and the Dodgers after an in-season trade. He helped the Dodgers to the National League Championship Series where they fell to eventual champion Atlanta. Scherzer posted a combined 15-4 record with a 2.46 ERA and 5.2 WAR. Scherzer and deGrom have similar ratings and repertoires, though deGrom has more velocity to his pitches. Even at the age of 37, Scherzer remains among the best pitchers in the game and the second-best in The Show 22, just behind his new teammate. 5. Marcus Semien (97 OVR)Team: Texas
Rangers Taking the baseball world by storm over the previous few seasons, Marcus Semien is the best second baseman in baseball, reflected in The Show as the highest rated infielder at the time of writing. It’s even more a testament to Semien’s talent as he was a natural shortstop before switching to second base in Toronto and now Texas. He made big news as one of two huge free agent signings for Texas, joining Corey Seager to form the Rangers’ new keystone combo for years. Semien spent 2021 with Toronto, batting .265 with 45 home runs, 102 RBI, and 5.0 WAR. His 45 home runs were the most in history by a primary second baseman. He also gained his first All-Star appearance and capped the season with a Silver Slugger, Gold Glove, and selection to the All-MLB First Team. Semien doesn’t necessarily stand out in any one rating other than his Durability; he can play everyday with little fear of injury. However, he is solid at basically everything. An interesting note is that every position player on this list is either a pull or extreme pull hitter, meaning they will most likely encounter overshifts to the pull side, including Semien. 6. Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. (96 OVR)Team: Toronto Blue Jays The son of Hall of Famer and namesake Vladimir Guerrero, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has shed most of the early concerns about his weight and ability to stay in the lineup to become one of the most feared hitters in baseball. In 2021, he formed a dynamic duo with Semien in the lineup. Junior led the Majors in total bases with 363 and tied with Salvador Pérez for the home run lead with 48, three more than his teammate Semien. He wasn’t just about power as he posted a .311 batting average and an on base percentage (OBP) of .401. He totaled 6.8 WAR. While Guerrero, Jr. is listed as a first baseman, it’s best to play him as DH in Franchise, though the ability is removed in Diamond Dynasty. Inarguably, his best abilities are in hitting the ball. He’s a power hitter, so use power swings until you get to two strikes. When he makes solid contact, the ball should travel far. 7. Aaron Judge (96 OVR)Team: New York Yankees The slugger for the Yankees – complete with his own fan section – is still one of the best players in baseball. Like deGrom, the big qualifier is “when healthy.” If his 2021 season was any indication, he may have finally overcome those health concerns after playing 148 games, the second most of his career and most since playing 155 games in 2017. He ended the 2021 season with a .287 average, 39 home runs, 98 RBI, and 4.0 WAR. He capped the year with a Silver Slugger, selection to the All-MLB First Team, and though he didn’t win a Gold Glove, he won the Fielding Bible award as their best defensive right fielder. He might have low Plate Vision (41), but makes up for it with solid to spectacular stats across the batting board. His defensive prowess is also reflected with only his Arm Strength (76) a bit low, though it’s a fine rating. One thing to note with Judge is that he’s one of the tallest position players in the game, making his strike zone one of the largest. You’ll have to cover more of the plate when using Judge and conversely, have more of the strike zone to work with when pitching against him. 8. Nolan Arenado (95 OVR)Team: St. Louis Cardinals Nolan Arenado is arguably the best defensive player in all of baseball and the best at third base since the legendary Brooks Robinson. People tend to forget that he can also mash the ball and it wasn’t just a product of being in Colorado for so many years. To put Arenado’s defensive dominance into perspective, consider that he’s won the Gold Glove at third base every season since 2013, his rookie season. He’s also won the Platinum Glove – awarded to the highest rated defender since 2011 – for five straight seasons dating to 2017. In 2021, Arenado hit .255 with 34 home runs, 105 RBI, and 4.1 WAR in addition to the above defensive rewards in his first season with St. Louis. He also made the All-Star team. Arenado’s defense is his calling card with the high ratings. He’s also a power hitter that can come through in the clutch (88). He’s durable, so you can slot in him at third base and the middle of the lineup for every game in Franchise mode with little fear of injury. In any case, at only 30 years old, he should still be the premier defender at third base for a few seasons, depending on the development of Ke’Bryan Hayes in Pittsburgh. 9. Bryce Harper (95 OVR)Team: Philadelphia
Phillies Once considered with Trout as the best in the game – and the gap isn’t as large as some make it out to be – Bryce Harper still ranks as one of the top ten players in baseball according to The Show 22. It’s fitting as Harper is coming off his best season since his 2015 M.V.P. season, even if the team didn’t reach his heights. In 2021, Harper won his second M.V.P. award – even though he didn’t make the All-Star team – by posting an average of .309 with 35 home runs, 84 RBI, 101 runs, and 5.9 WAR. He was also selected to the All-MLB First Team while providing solid to spectacular defense in right field. Harper’s mostly a power hitter who has seemed to trade more power for contact throughout the years as evidenced by his low Plate Vision (52). Still, his sky-high Discipline and Clutch ratings means he’ll rarely chase pitches and be ready for the big moments. His defense in right field has more to do with his throwing arm, but he can still cover ground and make all the plays you’d expect. 10. Shohei Ohtani (95 OVR)Team: Los Angeles
Angels The only two-way player on the list and the cover athlete for MLB The Show 22, Shohei Ohtani was finally able to show the West what he can do when the limiters are removed and he’s left to do what he does best: play baseball. Ohtani was the unanimous M.V.P. in 2021 after his historic season where he posted a pitching line of 9-2 in 23 starts with an ERA of 3.18 in 130.1 innings and 4.1 pitching WAR. Offensively, he posted a line of .257 with 46 home runs, 100 RBI, 103 runs, 26 stolen bases, and 4.9 batting WAR. Collectively, he posted 9.1 WAR in 2021 according to baseball-reference.com. Ohtani packs high velocity with deadly breaking movement on his pitches, most notably his nasty splitter. His Pitching Clutch (99) also means he won’t have his confidence rattled in high pressure situations on the mound. Offensively, he has great Speed (86) to go with his off-the-charts power. he actually led the league in triples with eight in 2021, displaying that speed. While he also has low vision (40), he makes up for it with great Discipline (92) and Clutch (76). Importantly, as a two-way player, it’s important that Ohtani’s Durability is high (95).
