  • CLOSED: Banks, Municipal/state/federal offices, Libraries, Schools, no USPS mail service, Stock Market, all state run COVID-19 testing sites

  • Franklin Regional Transit Authority (FRTA): No bus service on Monday, September 6.

MassDOT will suspend non-emergency construction beginning Friday, Sept. 3 at 5 a.m. through Tuesday morning, Sept. 7.

In Massachusetts, many government facilities and city/town offices are closed on major holidays, while some stores providing necessities do stay open. Here's what you need to know about what's open and closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Are Massachusetts post offices open on the holidays?

All post office locations nationwide will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

In Massachusetts, the U.S. Postal Service has announced extended hours for Massachusetts locations leading up to Christmas. For example, some post offices in Massachusetts will offer extended Saturday hours on the remaining weekend before Christmas: Dec. 18. And some will also offer Sunday retail hours on Dec. 19. Make sure to check information for your local location before you go.

USPS will operate as usual on Christmas Eve, as well as New Year's Eve. 

Are Massachusetts grocery stores open on the holidays?

Most grocery stores in the Bay State will be closed on Christmas Day, but they will be open and available to shop right up until the evening before. Shoppers are advised to check hours of their specific local locations. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, many stores may close early.

Are Massachusetts drug stores open on the holidays?

Many CVS locations will be open for regular hours both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Pharmacy hours may be reduced, though, or pharmacies may close all together. Check hours for your local locations.

Most Rite Aid stores will be open Christmas Eve, and certain stores will be open Christmas Day.

Walgreens will be open for regular hours on Christmas Eve, and most stores will be open on Christmas Day.

What are Massachusetts Dunkin' and Starbucks holiday hours?

Dunkin' locations in Massachusetts will be open on Christmas Eve with reduced hours, as well as open regular hours on New Year's Day, but the coffee shop will be closed on Christmas Day. 

As for Starbucks locations, holiday hours vary per location, as the company does not keep a universal holiday schedule. If you're craving a Starbucks coffee, you're advised to check your local location's hours. 

Can I buy alcohol in Massachusetts on Christmas, New Year's?

Massachusetts has blue laws which govern when stores can be open, including alcohol sales. Christmas Day is considered a "restricted" holiday, which means you cannot buy alcohol that day in Massachusetts. 

New Year's Day, however, is an unrestricted holiday.
