What does the Allay do in Minecraft?

The Allay is a passive mob that collects items for you. If you hand it a certain item, it will hunt around in a nearby area until it has gathered a stack. It will then return to the player and deliver the stack of items. This is incredibly useful for any Minecraft player, as you can send the Allay to hunt out more of any item you need. If you like mining or gathering resources, you can also use the Allay to hoover up any materials that you may have missed or forgotten to pick up.

It's worth noting that the Allay will only gather dropped items. It cannot mine or destroy blocks itself, so it won't be able to mine diamonds or Netherite for you while you complete other activities.

If you don't want the Allay to deliver items to you directly, you can also use note blocks to give it a different delivery zone. Simply sound a note block and then send the Allay out to gather items and it will return to the note block after collecting a stack.

How to find the Allay in Minecraft

If the above sounds like a useful helping hand for your various Minecraft escapades, then you'll want to know where to find the Allay. The Allay is found in two locations: Pillager Outposts and Woodland Mansions.

When you approach Pillager Outposts, look for cages around the outside. Inside, you should find an Allay that you can set free. In Woodland Mansions, Allays will spawn inside prison cells that you must also destroy to set them free. Either way, be prepared to fight off any nearby hostile mobs that guard the caged creature.

Allays don't need taming specifically, as they will always be passive. However, as mentioned above, the Allay won't actually gather items for you until you hand something over. So, if you want the Allay to gather any Iron Ore that you may not have picked up while mining, you'll need to hand it a piece of Iron Ore first.

What is the new allay mob on the block? At Minecraft Live 2021, the devs at Mojang once again provided us with a selection of new mobs to choose between for inclusion in the game. The ultimate winner was the item-collecting allay.

The Minecraft allay mob is a little blue fairy with bat wings. If you give it an item, it will find nearby dropped items of the same type. But, as the devs note on Twitter, it won’t duplicate that item or rifle through chests for it – it’s purely about picking up that item when it’s dropped on the overworld. The allay will then drop the collected items near a note block, apparently because it loves to dance.

The allay mob is one of several new Minecraft mobs and features in The Wild update, it joins Minecraft frogs, a new mangrove tree and swamp biome, and mud blocks. Here’s everything you need to know about the allay mob in Minecraft.

The other options in the vote were the glare, a darkness-fearing little guy voted out in the first round, and the copper golem, a craftable pal that would run around pushing copper buttons. Of course, there’s always a possibility that the losers of the vote may be added to the game eventually; the Wild update has swamp features shown in the Minecraft Biome vote from 2019, which lost to the mountain biome. However, there’s certainly no guarantee of that.

The Minecraft Allay is a relatively new mob that serves as a kind of caddy, picking up loose items and presenting them to its owner, a useful feature for those who are prone to leaving items behind or just want to make sure the area is properly combed along the way. A rather endearing ally, the Allay has already marked itself out as a fan favorite in Minecraft - because among other things, it'll dance when you play it music. Cute, right? The Minecraft Allay mobs are found in two locations since their introduction in the Minecraft The Wild Update: in dark oak cages around Pillager Outposts, and in the jail cells found in Woodland Mansions (such as the one seen above). They appear in groups of 1-3. though you can find multiple groups in one location - i.e., multiple jail cells and oak cages in the same area, each with a freshly baked batch of Allays inside. They tend to glow, so should be very easy to notice during nighttime hours (though they don't light up the surroundings like a torch).

Allays won't be aggressive and can be approached safely. Until properly interacted with, they will generally float about in no particular direction and pay the player no mind.

Allays in Minecraft are strange item collectors/carriers, and their behaviour is as follows:

When interacted with, the player gives the Allay whatever they're holding. The Allay then floats about nearby the player, looking for other, dropped versions of that item and presenting them to the player when found.
If the player interacts with an Allay empty-handed, they take back the item that was given originally, and the Allay goes back to passive indifference.
Allays do not attack and their owners cannot harm them. If another player or entity hurts them (assuming they aren't killed), the Allay flies about in a panic for a short time. If killed, they drop everything they're holding.
Note blocks, when played, cause nearby Allays to come over and dance.
Leads and Name Tags can be used on Allays.

The Minecraft Allay can pick up non-stackable items as well, and it has been suggested you may be able to use this Mob for sorting if you build an appropriate setup. The Allay drops off the items it has gathered once it's in range of a note block, so you can use one of those to determine where your collection should be deposited.

Breeding and/or duplicating Allay requires Minecraft Amethyst Shards, gathered by breaking Amethyst Clusters. If you give an Amethyst Shard to an Allay while it's dancing, it will make a noise, produce some hearts, and duplicate into a second Allay, splitting like an amoeba. You then have to wait five minutes before either of them can be duplicated again.
