Best Red Sox players right now

PlayStation's premier baseball simulation MLB The Show 21 recently released and fans are diving into their favorite team's rosters. The Boston Red Sox may be one of the MLB's more popular and notable teams, but that didn't stop them from having a wild beginning to the 2021 season. After starting the season with numerous losses and seeming like they were done before things even got started, they've rallied back to a solid record.

It has them leading the American League East as they are now well above .500 in terms of their record. Gone are the days of David Ortiz, but their roster is still home to some stellar players that have solid overalls when looking at the lineup from top to bottom.

10/10 Adam Ottavino, RP (77)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox Adam Ottavino

In many ways relief pitcher, Adam Ottavina has lived quite a dream career in the MLB. He's managed to play for 3 of the sports most historic and beloved teams in the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, and most recently the Boston Red Sox.

He's an average pitcher at best which is reflected in his 77 overall, but it's more surprising that this is good enough to land him in the Top 10. It goes to show how lacking the Red Sox roster is and illustrates how impressive their record and overall turnaround in 2021 is. By all accounts, they shouldn't be leading their division, but they are.

9/10 Eduardo Rodriguez, SP (79)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox Eduardo Rodriquez

Despite a rather high ERA of 3.82, Eduardo Rodriguez is having an incredible 2021 campaign for the Boston Red Sox. At the time of writing this, his record is 5-0 which is impressive considering he's allowed the most home runs on the team.

He didn't play in 2020 due to complications revolving around COVID-19, but an overall score of 79 in MLB The Show 21 seems so low that it will likely get bumped into the low-to-mid 80s sooner rather than later if he continues on the trend he's laid out for himself. The rest of the year can play out in a variety of different ways for the Venezuelan pitcher.

8/10 Hunter Renfroe, RF (80)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox Hunter Renfroe

Hunter Renfroe may sound like a familiar name, but the right fielder for the Boston Red Sox is not the same athlete who suits up for the Las Vegas Raiders. That player's name is spelled Hunter Renfrow, and his real first name is Hunter.

This Renfroe is new to the Boston Red Sox roster and joined the team entering the 2021 season. The 80 overall signed a rather small 1-year deal with the team so it's unlikely he returns for a longer stint with the club, especially considering his 2021 season has been lackluster at best.

7/10 Alex Verdugo, CF (81)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox Alex Verdugo

Alex Verdugo is relatively new to the Boston Red Sox as he made his transition over from the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2020 shortened MLB season. Verdugo is a role-playing outfielder who made his biggest headline as a player packaged in the trade that sent Mookie Betts out to Los Angeles in 2020.

Most scouts consider the 24-year-old to have incredibly unique arm strength, which means he could find a home with the Red Sox if he manages to properly hone that talent, which could lead to an overall higher than 81 in MLB The Show.

6/10 Rafael Devers, 3B (81)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox Rafael Devers

As a 24-year-old third baseman for the Boston Red Sox Rafael Devers has managed to have a decent career. At the age of 16, Devers was signed by the Red Sox out of the Dominican Republic, when at the time he was considered the 6th best prospect among all international players.

He's currently 2nd on the team in both home runs and RBI in 2021 and it's looking like this season might be his best yet. He's starting to understand the game on a new level and is a big reason for the Red Sox turn around despite missing their ace starting pitcher.

5/10 Xander Bogaerts, SS (82)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox Xander Boaegarts

Xander Bogaerts not only has one of the more unique names in the entirety of the MLB, but the shortstop is also a heck of a player. He's a player for the Boston Red Sox who has an overall much lower than what he likely deserves and/or has earned.

In 2019 he was a Silver Slugger Award recipient and was both an MLB All-Star and made the All-MLB First Team. An 82 overall seems low for a player who led all shortstops in 2020 in home runs and runs batted in. He was also second among shortstops in runs, total bases, on-base percentage, slugging, and OPS.

4/10 Kike Hernandez, 2B (82)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox Kiki Hernandez

Kike Hernandez is a new addition to the Boston Red Sox and is making his team debut in 2021 after being a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2015 and winning a World Series championship in the shortened 2020 MLB season.

He signed a 2-year deal with the club and despite primarily being a 2nd baseman, he began the 2021 season as the team's starting centerfielder. In MLB The Show 21 Hernandez has an overall of 82, which may not change much with him currently dealing with a hamstring injury that may linger and hurt his ability to play.

3/10 Christian Vazquez, C (85)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox Christian Vazquez

Christian Vazquez is the starting catcher for the Boston Red Sox and hails from Puerto Rico. He's mostly been a role player for most of his career and isn't a notable contact or power hitter when looking at his cumulative statistics.

Vazquez has had a career that's been aided by his development over the years and credits the Molina brothers for that growth. His 2020 season is one to be forgotten though as the 85 overall catcher allowed a league-leading 21 stolen bases against him. It seems like MLB The Show didn't punish him too much for that in MLB The Show 21.

2/10 J.D. Martinez, LF (87)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox JD Martinez

It's hard to find a player in the MLB currently hotter than J.D. Martinez. He's had himself such a good start to 2021 with 10 home runs and 31 runs batted in through 33 games played. That's not too bad for a left fielder who is now well over 30-years-old, who is sitting at an overall of 87.

MLB The Show generally does a good job of updating its rosters so don't be surprised if Martinez's hot streak leads him to a higher overall where he may join his teammate Chris Sale in the 90's club. It wouldn't be shocking if he secured a 4th All-Star appearance in 2021.

1/10 Chris Sale, SP (93)

MLB The Show 21 Boston Red Sox Chris Sale

Chris Sale's 93 overall is not only the highest overall on the Boston Red Sox, it happens to be the only player overall on the team above 90. In addition to that, he's also the only pitcher on the team with an overall higher than 80.

He's currently recovering from Tommy John surgery (an ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction) and has yet to make his 2021 season debut. Fans are hoping he returns to form when his recovery allows him to and his 93 overall in MLB The Show 21 is proven to be accurate, if not a little low for such an incredible pitcher.
