Fast forward to today, we see Tiger Woods back in professional golf, completing a sensational return to the sport. Woods has won the prestigious green jacket five times, but what leaderboard finish and prize money payout did he achieve in 2022?

Tiger Woods’ prize money payout at the 2022 Masters

Tiger Woods made his Masters debut in 1995 and has pretty much played every edition since. He’s a household name at Augusta National, and fans were nothing but delighted to see him make his comeback at a venue where he is immensely loved.

Woods had a good start to the 2022 Masters and capitalized on the fan support. However, he struggled to close out and finished outside the Top 40 following Sunday’s final round. The 46-year-old former champion carded a brutal +13 over four rounds, a score that placed him 47th on the leaderboard.

A 47th place finish is usually not lucrative, but given that this is the Masters, qualifying for the weekend is enough to guarantee you handsome prize money. Tiger Woods received a payout of $43,500 for his efforts, and there were only five other players who finished behind him on the leaderboard.

Overall, Tiger Woods had a good outing on his comeback, but given his competitive mindset, the 15-time major winner would have hoped for a better result. A solo 47 marks his worst ever finish at Augusta National.

I didn’t play my best out there, but just to have the support and appreciation from all the fans, I don’t think words can describe that. Congratulations to Scottie Scheffler on an outstanding win. It’s been a special run. pic.twitter.com/8BAMJKlGFY

The Big Cat would not be taking it hard on himself over this. It is a win-win situation for him and it makes little sense to think why it would be otherwise. Woods has already announced his next tournament, and we can do nothing but wait to watch him in live-action once again!

If there’s one tournament in golf where how much the winner makes in prize money is ancillary to everything else that comes with claiming the title, it’s the Masters. The legacy of being one of the select golfers to own a green jacket, along with having a space in the Champions locker room, a seat at the Champions dinner and a place in golf history, is worth more than the payout you’ll find in your bank account.

Make no mistake, however, those who shake the Augusta National chairman’s hand in Butler Cabin at the conclusion of the tournament earn an impressive financial reward.

As chatter over how much top golfers are making in PGA Tour events has increased, and the prize money payouts during the 2021-22 season are jumping from $367 million to $427 million, there is speculation that Augusta National will announce a new record prize money payout. Since 2019, the Masters payout has been $11.5 million, with the winner earning $2.07 million.

The club tends to release the prize money payout breakdown after the cut is made, so we’ll likely have to wait a few more days). Currently, the Masters trails the U.S. Open ($12.5 million overall purse) and the PGA Championship ($12 million) in terms of men’s majors with the largest purses. (The Open Championship also paid $11.5 million in 2021.) All the majors are currently dwarfed by the Players Championship, which paid out $20 million in March with winner Cameron Smith earning $3.6 million.
