Normally I do really in-depth guides to AEW PPVs with tons of links to AEW’s youtube channel. But I’ve started a new job and am incredibly overwhelmed, so here’s a slightly simpler one. Double or Nothing will stream on Bleacher Report Live in the US, on Fite internationally, it’ll be streaming in select movie theaters in the US, and is available from cable/satellite sources in the US as well. The Buy-In (pre-show) starts at 7:00 PM EST, and will be streaming for free on AEW’s Youtube as well. There will be one match on the pre-show, and video recaps promoting the matches on the full card. Then the full event begins at 8:00 PM EST and is expected to last four-ish hours. AEW will also be doing “Forbidden Door” - a collaboration with New Japan Pro Wrestling next month. Expect some NJPW talent to show up at Double or Nothing to promote it and start storylines. AEW has two tunnels. Heels come from the left tunnel, faces from the right. They pretty much never actually talk about it, but that’s how it works. So if there’s someone debuting or appearing who I didn’t mention, that’s where to look. AEW Control Center: Double or Nothing is a 45 minute summary of what’s happening on this PPV. and AEW Countdown to Double or Nothing is a one hour summary. You could watch both those two videos and be caught up and not need the rest of this. But here we go anyways. BUY IN: HOOK & Danhausen vs. Tony Nese & "Smart" Mark Sterling
Previously: Danhausen wanted to be friends with Hook, who wanted nothing to do with him. Tony Nese was upset that fans loved both Hook and Danhausen, and he got no attention at all. He attacked them both, now Hook and Danhausen have teamed up. Somehow his lawyer got pulled into the tag match too. tl;dr - two memes versus a good wrestler and a funny one. Darby Allin vs. Kyle O'Reilly
Darby and Kyle O’Reilly competed in the Owen Hart Tournament. Darby lost, Sting was injured, and now Darby wants revenge. That’s it. Sort of last minute, but will be a fun match. tl;dr - Skater who takes tons of punishment versus guy willing to give lots of punishment. Scorpio Sky, Ethan Page & Paige VanZant vs. Sammy Guevara, Frankie Kazarian & Tay Conti
Scorpio Sky is the TNT Champion, having defeated Sammy Guevara. Sammy and his girlfriend Tay Conti want a mixed tag match with Scorpio Sky and Paige Van Zant to get revenge. Scorpio cheated to retain the championship against his former friend Frankie Kazarian. Frankie, Sammy and Tay broke into the America Top Team gym and stole some MMA title belts. Now Scorpio, Ethan and Paige will face them in a mixed trios match. If Sammy, Frankie & Tay lose, Sammy and Frankie can no longer challenge for the TNT Championship. (Presumably while Scorpio is champion.) Scorpio Sky cut a promo on twitter about how angry he is. And here’s the summary from Countdown to Double or Nothing. This has been an AWFUL storyline that is hopefully ending forever and we can move on from. tl;dr - A bunch of assholes fight and no one wins. Not even the fans. Death Triangle vs. House of Black Death Triangle is the team of:
The House of Black is a spooky group run by:
The House of Black has been going after Death Triangle off and on for months now. So long that the reason why they’re fighting has sort of gotten forgotten. Hopefully this ends it. House of Black surprised Death Triangle after a match. Then Death Triangle returned the favor. Then Malakai Black did a creepy promo on Countdown to Double or Nothing. tl;dr - Creepy goths versus somewhat heroic high-fliers. Young Bucks vs. The Hardys
The Young Bucks think the Hardys don’t have what it takes anymore. The Hardys think the Young Bucks have been riding their coattails for years. (Also, additional build up for this has been happening on the Young Bucks’ vlog, Being The Elite.)The Young Bucks dressed up as the Hardys to mock them. The two teams spoke about their issues on Countdown to Double or Nothing. tl;dr - Two sets of tag team brothers beat each other up. MJF vs. Wardlow
MJF hired Wardlow to be his bodyguard and help him cheat to win, often using the Dynamite Diamond Ring. Wardlow needed the money for his mother, and accepted MJF’s abuse until recently. Now Wardlow wants to be free from his awful boss, who has been very cruel. MJF made Wardlow jump through hoop after hoop to get this match, including getting 10 lashes, and a cage match with Shawn Spears where MJF was ref. Wardlow won anyways, and gets to face MJF. If Wardlow loses, he can’t get signed to AEW as a solo wrestler rather than being MJF’s bodyguard. And here’s the promos from Countdown to Double or Nothing. tl;dr - Rich asshole gets beaten up by his former employee. (There’s behind the scenes drama involving MJF right now, which I just don’t have the time or energy to get into.) The Owen Hart Foundation Mens’s and Women’s Tournament Finals AEW is honoring the late Owen Hart with a men’s and women’s tournament. Winner gets a trophy and bragging rights. The Owen Hart Foundation Men's Tournament Finals: Samoa Joe vs. Adam Cole
Samoa Joe beat Kyle O’Reilly to make it to the Owen Tournament Finals, but is still recovering from a damaged arm courtesy of his former protege Jay Lethal, Jay’s manager Sonjay Dutt, and Jay’s muscle, the massive Satnam Singh attacking him after a quarterfinal match. Adam Cole defeated Jeff Hardy to make it to the finals. Here's the recap from Countdown to Double or Nothing. tl;dr - Big bruiser veteran good guy versus smaller, craftier bad guy who cheats way too much. The Owen Hart Foundation Women's Tournament Finals: Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. vs. Ruby Soho
Doctor Britt Baker defeated Toni Storm to make it to the finals. Ruby Soho defeated fan-favorite Kris Statlander to make it to the finals. Here's a recap from Countdown to Double or Nothing. tl;dr - Arrogant cheating doctor with an entourage versus punk rock solo act. (Please win Ruby.) Anarchy In The Arena: Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, Santana, Ortiz & Eddie Kingston vs. The Jericho Appreciation Society The Jericho Appreciation Society are “Sports Entertainers” who think they’re better than the “Pro Wrestlers” of AEW.
VS The Blackpool Combat Club is William Regal’s faction of violent wrestling badasses.
And their unlikely allies, Eddie Kingston and company.
Santana and Ortiz quit Jericho’s previous faction, the Inner Circle, feeling that Jericho had just been using them. Jericho then got his new team, the Jericho Appreciation Society to attack Santana, Ortiz, and their buddy Eddie Kingston. (Eddie and Jericho had already been feuding.) Now, Eddie’s old friend Jon Moxley, and Moxley’s current tag partner Bryan Danielson has shown up to even the odds. Jericho even used a fire ball to attack Eddie, and is now calling himself a Wizard because he needs a new catchphrase every few months. Jericho wanted to settle things with another “Stadium Stampede” match, but got turned down. Instead, Anarchy in the Arena will be a no rules match where weapons are allowed. Also, the Jericho Appreciation Society had a brawl with their opponents recently. And here’s a summary of what’s going on from Countdown to Double or Nothing. tl;dr - 5 pro wrestlers will face 5 sports entertainers in an anything goes random bullshit match that won’t make much sense but should be fun to watch. TBS Champion Jade Cargill vs Anna Jay
When Jade and her baddies attacked Kris Statlander and Ruby Soho after a Owen Tournament Quarterfinal, Anna Jay came to their rescue and pissed off Jade in the process. Anna Jay got close to beating Jade before, but will she be able to dethrone a dominant champion? Here’s some promos from Countdown to Double or Nothing. tl;dr - It’s a David vs Goliath thing, just with Goliath not being likely to lose this one. AEW Tag Team Champions Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus vs “Limitless” Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland vs “Absolute” Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs
Hobbs and Starks make up Team Taz, and were feuding with Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland. Both teams want a shot at Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus for the AEW Tag Titles. There will be a three way tag match. In a three-way singles match before then, Swerve pinned Ricky Starks in a three-way singles match with Jungle Boy. And here’s some promos from Countdown to Double or Nothing. tl;dr - A boy and his dinosaur fight two cool guys, and two mean guys. AEW Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa vs Serena Deeb
Serena Deeb thinks that Thunder Rosa has had it easy in her career compared to all the challenges she’s faced, and wants the AEW Womens’ World Championship to prove she’s the best. Serena Deeb interrupted Thunder Rosa recently. Then, Thunder Rosa recently called out her opponent. And here’s their promos from the Countdown to Double or Nothing video. tl;dr - La Mera Mera (Spanish slang for "Best of the Best") faces The Woman with One Thousand Holds AEW World Champion Hangman Adam Page vs CM Punk
CM Punk needs to prove he’s the best, and that means taking on the champion. Punk has gotten under Hangman’s skin though, causing him to have some self-doubt again. CM Punk announced he’d be the next challenger for the world title. Over the past few weeks, the two of them have been getting more and more upset at each other. CM Punk and Hangman had an in-ring confrontation, got face to face. And here’s their promos from the Countdown to Double or Nothing video.. tl;dr - Anxious Cowboy Champion vs overly confident pride of Chicago. MISC FTR, the Ring of Honor Tag Team Champions and the AAA Tag Team Champions had an ROH title defense against Roppongi Vice, the team of Trent Barettta and Rocky Romero, which got interrupted by members of United Empire from New Japan Pro Wrestling, Jeff Cobb and the Great O-Khan. Expect fall out from that to hit, setting up “Forbidden Door” for next month. There's likely a bunch of stuff I missed. If you think of something, please post it below. EDIT: Updated with Daddy Magic's proper name, Daniel Garcia's profession, Eddie Kingston's alignment and clearer links in a few places. |
