Is Suicide Squad worth watching Reddit

Hello! I'm getting myself into the DCEU and I've seen "The Suicide Squad" and "Birds of Prey" before going back and starting the DCEU films in chronological order. I recently watched "Man of Steel" and "Batman V Superman" and the next one would be... The original "Suicide Squad"

I know the critics of this movie were very bad and I know it is a side story, so my question for people that have watched everything is: is it worth it to watch? Or should I just skip to Wonder Woman directly?

Edit: consensus is go for it! So I'm watching it rn

Edit 2: it really was a solid 6/10! Lol

No spoilers below :)

I've seen the animated Suicide Squad movie and enjoyed it. It helps a lot to know the backgroud on a lot of the characters if you want to see past what little backstory the new film gives you, but I understand the movie would be lots longer if they spend much more than 30 seconds introducing the characters. Luckily I saw it with a friend who said just to ask him during the movie who was who. I really enjoyed it and hope this will open up even more DC live-action media opportunities in the future like TV shows and movies.

Actors- Great. I think Will Smith has a Midas' touch when it comes to these type of movies. Jared Leto did fine as The Joker. I hate seeing 'he's a terrible joker' since every single actor, voice of otherwise has done it completely differently. I love that the character of The Joker has this thing about it, where if you're not too diehard on a single artist/actor/storyline you can just enjoy the version of him being portrayed. Harley Quinn, obviously used as eye-candy, pff, who cares? That kinda part of her character. She's always been drawn/animated as an attractive person when she's in her element. Even some of the comics had risque parts with her in them (Harley And Ivy set #1-#3, shower scene). If you've read some of her backstory or some of the comic books about her yu'll realize there's a lot more than a crazy chick with a nice bum. I was dissapointed that they kinda went with that costume for her but I don't her original leotard thing would have fit into the movie very well either. When the Aussie character showed up there was audible cheering in the theater (Aussie here) and plenty of laughs were had by his shennanigans. The villain was also cool, awesome to see sort of occult/witchy stuff in the movie.

Music- I liked it, not much more to say, it was funky and cool.

I saw Suicide Squad (2021) and here is my spoiler free review.

First of all, this movie is a James Gunn movie in the same sense that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a Tim Burton Movie.

It had a style to it but once you get past the “Gunn” veneer, you realize the movie is a god-awful mess of a terrible move.

First of all, I ask who this movie is made for? It had nudity and excessive gore so the audience would have to be for adults. But if there are enough emotionally immature adults who the complete lack of a plot, cartoonish characters, and terrible resolution would apply to, then this movie could very well serve as a sociological test for emotional arrested development of an entire society.

I was bored through the entire film, and there was nothing substantive to draw me in or care about any of the characters. On top of that the one character who I was capable of empathizing with and rooting for was clearly just a sacrificial lamb from the first scene. This made the movie an unfun experience to engage with.

2nd of all there was almost no character development. Every single character was exactly the same at the beginning of the film as they were at the end. The one character which did have an epiphany and grow as a human being was rewarded by an immediate attempt at comedy, manifested in their death.

This movie was basically like watching a video game that I had no interest in, that wasn’t fun, and felt like it was just designed to make me resent the M.O. of Hollywood for setting such a low standard for expectations of quality that people got extremely over pumped about theoretically this movie not being even worse than it was.

My takeaways:

  1. Suicide Squad was a terrible movie.

  2. If you enjoyed it, you really need to take a break from expectation lowering crap and read a book, preferably one that a high school English teacher would love to hear your thoughts about, and reset your quality standards.

  3. Suicide Squad was the most on tone movie for 2021, in that during a pandemic exacerbated completely by bad choices and selfishness, this movie serves to remind the few of us who still have hope for a better world, that no, this is indeed the best humanity is capable of and we really are an undeserving species who disproves any intelligence behind a grand design, and that evolution is nothing but a flaw in an imperfect, illogical, chaotic, and likely cruel universe that has led to this moment in time were this movie can pass as anything other than an affront to the despicable value human beings place of crap over other alternatives.

How many affordable housing units could have been built for the price of this movie that could be filled with the most imperfect and vulnerably flawed human beings, that would still just by existing in their flawed and vulnerable state posses more value to existence than this terrible movie?
